Learn industry-relevant skills to design and construct projects of all shapes and sizes, and develop your creative
potential to bring any space to life. Get practical experience with one-on-one teacher interaction–from computeraided drawing, sketching, building mock-ups and interpreting building codes and regulations.
Course details
Enhance your career with the latest in design and technical computer skills by enrolling in our Diploma of Interior
Design and Decoration program. Learn about the traditional aspects of interior design, and use this knowledge to
take designing to the next level by gaining practical skills in modern construction methods and computer-generated
technical drawing.
Topics include:
Presentation sketches and display boards
Design sketches
Residential design
Retail design
Anthropometrics and proxemics
Selection of materials, colour schemes, fabrics, furniture, fixtures and finishes
Construction methodology
Manual and computer-generated technical drawings (CAD skills)
Client presentations.
Throughout your studies you will develop practical skills in planning and undertaking refurbishments of residential,
general commercial and retail environments.
This in-demand skill set can lead you to employment as a draftsperson working on residential or commercial
projects under the supervision of builders, architects, building designers, interior designers, kitchen/bathroom
designers or project administrators. Self-employment is also an option following appropriate industry experience.

Credit towards the following degree programs is available to Diploma graduates. Students must apply for University
entry through QTAC.
Bachelor of Design (Honours) (Interior Design), Queensland University of Technology
Academic credit: 1 year
Time remaining at university: 3 years
Bachelor of Design Futures, Griffith University
Academic credit: 1 year
Time remaining at university: 3 years
A diploma graduate will receive a minimum Tertiary Entrance Rank of 87 (OP equivalent 8) when applying to
Queensland University of Technology or Griffith University. Distinction and credit grades on Performance Level
Assessment units in the diploma can further increase a graduate's TER to 91 (OP equivalent 6).

• Draftsperson working on residential projects either under supervision of architects, building designers or as selfemployed persons with appropriate industry experience
• Draftsperson working on commercial projects working with interior designers, architects, builders, building
designers or project administrators, are able to be self-employed following the appropriate industry experience
• Provides graduates with the opportunity to join the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) as a Graduate Member
which, with additional workplace experience, leads to Associate Membership.

This qualification has no formal entry criteria however TAFE Queensland Brisbane has the following selection
criteria for this qualification;
School leavers must have completed Year 12 or equivalent; a pass standard in English is desirable.
