Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Matthew 22:1-14
Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and elders of the people in parables, saying:
The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son.
He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to
come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have
prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready;
CONVENT
come to the feast.”’ Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another

to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The

king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
Then he said to his servants, ‘The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not

you find.’ The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and

But when the king came in to meet the guests, he saw a man there not dressed in a
wedding garment. The king said to him, ‘My friend, how is it that you came in here
without a wedding garment?’ But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his
attendants, ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there
will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ Many are invited, but few are chosen.”

Notes
• Luke 14:15-24 is a similar parable of a wedding feast, but it does not have the part of
guest not dressed properly. Some biblical scholars say that it might be a separate
parable perhaps adapted by Matthew.
• Chapters 21 and 22 of Matthew in particular include parables and incidents that speak
of the rejection of Jesus as the Messiah, or the failure to recognize the presence of the
Son of God in the midst of the people.
• Jesus makes himself present in the public square. He is surrounded by people of all
walks of life who cherish listening to him. There are others, however, who think they
are closer to God than the rest, who fail to welcome him. Among those who hear him,
he chooses a number of disciples, but one of them betrays him in the end.

Response to October 6 Decision by the U.S. Supreme Court
Bishop Richard J. Malone and Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone
The chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth, Bishop
Richard J. Malone of Buffalo, New York, and the chairman of the USCCB’s Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of
Marriage, Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone of San Francisco, expressed serious disappointment at the October 6 decision
by the U.S. Supreme Court not to consider current cases that strike down laws upholding marriage as between one man
and one woman.
Upholding the inviolable dignity of every human person is a duty for all, and this duty entails the defense of the unique
meaning of marriage as between one man and one woman. The Supreme Court’s decision not to take up any of the cases
striking down state laws reflecting the authentic meaning of marriage in five states is extremely disappointing and surprising.
All of these state laws were democratically enacted, including most by the direct vote of large majorities within just the last
decade. Millions of Americans had looked to the Court with hope that these unjust judicial decisions might be reversed.
Instead, as a result of the Supreme Court’s action today, those decisions are allowed to take effect. Furthermore, marriage
laws in six other states are now in jeopardy. !
Marriage is and can only be between a man and a woman—a unique relationship in which the state has a vested interest. It
is the only institution that unites a wife and a husband together for life and unites them to any children that come from their
union. This truth presumes and supports the equal dignity of all people, especially of children whose right to a mother and
a father deserves the utmost legal protection. The Supreme Court’s action fails to resolve immediately the injustice of
marriage redefinition, and therefore should be of grave concern to our entire nation.
Globally, we are at a time of recognizing the decisive importance of marriage and the family when it comes to addressing
challenges of poverty and serving the good of all. This is a time when marriage needs to be strengthened, not redefined.
Our young people need encouragement to embrace the gift and responsibility of marriage as it truly is—a permanent,
faithful, and fruitful gift of self between a man and a woman. May all of us continue to work to strengthen and protect
marriage and stand for justice for all, especially children, who are the most vulnerable.

Statement from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles
on lawsuit by SCI/S.E. Funeral Homes of
California, Inc.
September 30, 2014
The Archdiocese had lease contracts with Stewart Enterprises for
mortuaries at six Catholic Cemeteries.! The leases specifically
prohibit their transfer or entrustment of operations without the
prior written consent of the Archdiocese.
S.E. Funeral Homes of California, Inc., a subsidiary of Service
Corporation International (SCI) complaint fails to acknowledge
that a breach of that contract, such as the acquisition of Stewart
by SCI, gives the Archdiocese the right to terminate the
leases.!We brought this to the attention of SCI last year during
the merger process.
The burial of our dead is a ministry of the Archdiocese.! Catholic
Cemeteries are an extension of our Church family and have been
an essential ministry of the Church since its beginnings.
We want the faithful to be assured that when they select a
Catholic funeral for their loved ones, they are receiving pastoral
care directly from a ministry of the Catholic Church. During this
legal dispute with SCI, there will be no interruption in our
ministry and service at Archdiocesan cemeteries.
