Peter is a carer for his wife who has a
personality disorder. They have four
children.
He has been involved in the sectioning
process on at least 10 occasions, in police
and hospital settings. He has also been
involved in Acute Hospital and Community
Services.
Peter helped set up and run a Mental
Health Carers charity for over 300 carers
in the Bournemouth, Poole and South East
Dorset area. Working with Councils, Social
Services, Clinical Commission Groups,
Third Sector and fellow carers has given
him excellent knowledge of current issues
affecting Mental Health carers.
He currently works at Bournemouth
University as Carer and Service User
Co-ordinator in Health and Social Care.
Vernal Scott, Naz

Author Vernal
Scott is an openly
gay Christian dad,
diversity and human
rights consultant,
‘McKenzie Friend’ (in family court), zestful
keynote speaker, media commentator and
facilitator of workshops. He also provides
confidential support to individuals dealing
with sexuality, ‘coming out’ and HIV issues.
Vernon has over twenty-five years of
experience in public sector management,
working across a full range of equality and
diversity characteristics.
In the mid-80s he launched the People’s
multi-cultural group at the London Lesbian
& Gay Centre and later founded the Black
Communities AIDS team. In 1987 he was
appointed Head of HIV services for Brent
and in 2003 joined Islington as their
Head of Equality and Diversity. Currently
freelancing, Vernal has connections with
a diverse range of projects and companies
including e-leaning specialists Marshall
ACM, Naz Project London, the Peter
Tatchell Foundation and the London AIDS
Memorial Campaign.

Dr Baggaley qualified from St
Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1984. He served
in the British Army from 1985 until 1997,
and trained as a psychiatrist both there
and at Guy’s Hospital London.
He has held positions including Senior
Lecturer in Military Psychiatry, Head of
Division at the Defence Services Psychiatric
Centre, Catterick and Clinical Director of
Adult Mental Health in Lewisham.
Rachel GouldbourneBirkenshaw, Carer
Rachel GouldbourneBirkenshaw is a
mother, chef and a
part-time carer for
her twin sister who
has borderline personality disorder (BPD).
Being an identical twin of mixed race
heritage, she is uniquely positioned to
provide an insight into the challenges of
supporting someone who has a mental
health condition and with whom she also
shares the same DNA.
He was appointed to the posts of
consultant psychiatrist for the South
London & Maudsley NHS Trust and
Senior Lecturer in psychiatry for Guy’s,
King’s College and St Thomas’s Hospitals’
Medical and Dental School in 1997. He is
secondary care lead for the London Health
Programmes Mental Health Case for
Change. He set up a novel model of care
called the Triage Model in Lewisham in
2003, and currently spends one day a week
working on the newly opened Lambeth
Triage Ward.
Ashley Storer-Smith,
Vice President
Activities – Student
Union
Ashley is a Mechanical
Engineering graduate
from LSBU and was
elected Vice President of Activities at
LSBU’s Students’ Union. During his second
year at university he battled with anxiety
that was aggravated by illness. Due to his
struggle with personal identity, he has
been recently diagnosed with depression
which hinders his ability to do his job as
a political figure of the Union. He will be
speaking out to show that anyone can
suffer from mental health issues.
