Ladies and Gentlemen,
the bioeconomy plays a crucial role in a forward-looking sustainability policy. The committed, resource-efficient and sustainable use of renewable bioresources provides industry with versatile
alternatives to fossil resources.
Bioresources have been used to produce food since time immemorial. They are also used as building and handcraft materials.
Today they are applied in industry and for generating energy
more and more. Renewable resources are not just used for food;
they are now used to manufacture many everyday products,
from plastic bottles to car parts. Our agricultural and forestry
sectors produce the necessary raw materials.
Global material flows in the bioeconomy are complex. They are
not independent; instead, they form a many-branched network of
communicating paths. If one material flow changes, this may have
an impact on the others, due to the world‘s limited amount of usable
forests and agricultural land. A sustainable bioeconomy must take
account of these challenges, in order to successfully continue the
transformation of the energy system, to provide our industry with a
secure supply of raw materials, to contribute to climate protection and nature conservation, and not least to help bear our responsibility for providing a constantly growing global population
with an adequate supply of healthy food.
The central issues are:
- To what extent is bioeconomy an alternative to the fossil-based economy?
- How can we use and continue to develop the potential of the bioeconomy at global level?
- How can we exclude the possibility that the increasing use of bio mass for energy and material recovery may have a negative impact on food security?
- In developing the bioeconomy, how can we ensure that we
protect natural resources, the climate and biodiversity?
At the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture‘s conference
on „Bioeconomy – a sustainable alternative to the fossil-based
economy?“, international representatives from science, industry
and civil society will discuss these issues with policymakers and
the audience. The conference aims to identify the opportunities
and risks facing the bioeconomy, now an increasingly important
part of the global economy, and to discuss solutions for creating
a sustainable bioeconomy.
