AN ELECTRIC FUTURE FOR GERMANY BEMOBILIT Y, BERLIN ELEK TROMOBIL 2.0 BERLIN, GERMANY As the number of car owners continues to rise, so does the problem of congestion and environmental pollution in our cities. There is an urgent need to find new transportation concepts that will meet the growing social, economic and environmental challenges while still maintaining a high level of individual mobility. The BeMobility partners are seeking to provide the solution using electric systems. Taking Berlin as a case study, they started by making all public transport electric and then supplemented this with electric cars, scooters, pedelecs and bikes that can be rented for individual use. A particular focus is on e-powered car sharing schemes that will build on the success of current initiatives, providing e-cars and charging stations in inner city residential communities and at transport hubs such as train stations, so that commuters can easily access and share the facilities. BuroHappold Engineering is working closely with the partners to develop and implement the systems required to support this initiative. Considering spatial, functional, economic, technical and aesthetic assets, we are designing two prototype charging stations that will serve all types of e-vehicle, and demonstrating how the e-concept can be integrated into existing infrastructure throughout Berlin and all other German cities. Throughout our work we are consulting a wide range of stakeholders (including traffic providers and commuters) to ensure we develop a system that meets their needs, using interactive apps, films and models to communicate our ideas. The aim of this project is to show how user friendly, sustainable and cost-effective e-transport can be, so that other cities across Germany will adopt the model. To support this, we are concurrently producing a ‘Guidebook on Integrated Charging Infrastructure’ that can be used by planners, energy providers, developers and architects across the country to help them incorporate e-mobility into their cities.
