AOSpine Principles Specimen Course
Welcome to Muttenz
Dear colleagues
It is a great pleasure to invite you to this AOSpine Principles Specimen Course.
The course is targeted for young neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons with 1 to 3 years
experience. It focuses on the basic principles and techniques of posterior approaches to the
spine, decompression and instrumentation as well as anterior cervical spine approaches
and instrumentation.
A distinguished faculty of neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons will guide you through
the different tasks.
The course will be held at the new AMTS (Academy for Medical Training and Simulation)
in Muttenz close to Basel which is well equipped and offers ideal requirements for a
successful event.
Sincerely

established interest in spinal surgery. Spinal fellows at the beginning of their fellowship may
also apply for this course.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course participants should be able to perform in a structured stepwise
manner:
• Midline posterior approach of the spine as well as far lateral lumbar appraoch.
• Posterior decompression of the spine including laminectomy and cross over decompression
technique.
• Pedicle instrumentation of the thoracic and lumbar spine.
• Posterior instrumentation of the cervical spine an cervicothoracic junction.
• Anterior approach of the cervical spine.
• Anterior discectomy and fusion of the cervical spine.
