GOAL: Factor quadratic expressions
REVIEW:
• A binomial is
• Methods to multiply binomials:
Multiply using the DISTRIBUTIVE method
(x + 4) (x + 2)
Multiply using the FOIL method
(x + 4) (x + 2)
Factoring is the opposite of multiplying binomials; when we
factor we start with a quadratic trinomial in standard form.
• We end up with 2 binomials
• It might help to list all factors of the constant (c)

Use the following when factoring any polynomial
I. Combine like terms and put in descending order. II.
Take out the GCF (Greatest common factor)
III. Count the remaining terms to determine what pattern is present.
EX 1. What is the expression in factored form: 4x2 ­ 28x • GCF
YOU TRY: CH 4.4 Student Companion pg 96 #'s 13,14
EX 2. What is the expression in factored form: 7x + x2 + 6
• Arrange in descending order; "a" is = to 1; use Trial and Error or the AC method

(factor out the -1 in #9)
EX 3. What is the expression in factored form: 2x2 + 5x ­ 12
• "a" is not = to 1: Trial and Error, the AC method, or Factor by GROUPING
