From the Dean’s desk… First of all I would just like to thank you for your understanding, following my six afternoons away from the parish, discharging my diocesan responsibilities. To have six sets of diary commitments in one week is very unusual, and is the exception rather than the rule. So thank you. Secondly, I sincerely request your prayers as I am being installed (Deo Volente) as a member of the Chapter of Canons this coming Tuesday along with Canon David Roberts. The installation will take place (D.V.) at the Autumn Chapter Mass (which traditionally is celebrated in a Canon’s parish, in this case Our Lady & St Christopher Romiley ) the Spring Chapter Mass being always at the Cathedral in honour of Patronal Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians. Please keep me and all the Chapter of Canons in your prayers on Tuesday. Finally, I have the pleasure of announcing that His Excellency, Archbishop Mennini, Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain will be visiting the Cathedral and celebrating Mass on the Solemnity of All Saints at the Cathedral with Bishop Mark concelebrating at 10:45am (on November 2nd – as the Solemnity is transferred to the Sunday). Archbishop Mennini is making a pastoral visit to the Diocese and staying with us from Friday to Sunday (visiting Stockport, Chester, Ellesmere Port and Shrewsbury during his stay). I would therefore like to consult with you (especially the 8:30am Cathedral Mass and the 9:30am St Winefride’s Mass congregations) about the arrangements for Mass on the solemnity of All Saints. Given the honour of having the ‘papal ambassador’ to Great Britain coming to celebrate Mass at our Cathedral, I wonder whether we should all try and attend one celebration of Mass that morning, and give a good account of who we are as the Catholic Church in our town of Shrewsbury. To this end, I feel, there are three options: (A) Change nothing and have the normal Mass schedule for a Sunday (B) Adopt the ‘Palm Sunday’ schedule: have a Mass at 8:30 at the Cathedral, and 9am at St Winefride’s allowing people to then support the 10:45am Mass in the Cathedral if they so choose. (C) Cancel all morning Masses except the 10:45am (retaining the 6pm Vigil and 6pm Sunday evening for those who do wish to attend the Solemn Mass. Unfortunately, I am going to be running from one Mass to another on Sunday (as Fr David is still recovering, and Fr Sebastian is supplying in Oswestry) and so I cannot stand at the back of church at the 8:30am and 9:30am Masses as I will be celebrating all the morning Masses in Shrewsbury back to back, but I would gladly receive emails/phone calls or catch me in the week. I need to make a decision and an announcement about the Masses by next weekend as the following weekend is All Saints. Thank you, please be assured of my prayers and pray for me. Today is World Mission Sunday. Today the Holy Father invites all Catholics to contribute to a special collection for Missio, his official charity for overseas mission. Your prayers and donations today will support the work of missionaries and young churches as they share faith, build churches and provide healthcare and education, often in difficult and dangerous circumstances overseas. The World Mission Sunday collection will go in its entirety to support mission projects worldwide that bring God’s love and message of dignity for all. Please give what you can, and if possible, please use the Gift Aid envelopes if you are a taxpayer. Every gift makes a real difference to people living in poverty who are yearning to hear the Good News of God’s love for them. Month of the Rosary. For the month of October we will be having a Holy Hour in the Cathedral on Mondays at 5.30pm for peace in the Middle East, especially in Iraq, Syria and the Holy Land. This initiative has come by way of a request from four parishioners but it would be wonderful to see as many of you as possible coming to spend time with the Lord in silent prayer.
