Paws for Love Foundation
There’s no doubt about
it – the days have grown
shorter, mornings are
decidedly chilly, and
there is some ‘pink’
appearing in our
dogwood forest. Cats
and dogs may have
been napping away the
“dog days” of our hot
California summer, but
the Paws for Love
volunteers kept a busy
pace with fundraising,
promoting adoptions,
and assisting with
emergency medical
expenses on the West
Coast and beyond.
As we bid farewell to a
productive summer, we
share with you some of
our favorite stories: a
“thank you” reception for
our family of outstanding
volunteers; a Wizard of
Oz themed night of
Bingo; Dog-a-Palooza
day in Petaluma;
adventures in Wyoming,
meeting and painting
with shelter pets rescued
in the Old West; proving
that dogs are indeed
artsy at “Artsy Dogs of
Kokomo”; mixing pints
and paws at Lagunitas
Brewing Co.’s “Beers &
Barks”; a thoroughly
enjoyable evening
operating the bar at the
Pride & Joy concert in
Montgomery Village;
and, finally, “Yappy
Hour” at the Tasting
Room on the Green
in Windsor.
As we sail into fall,
tickets are available for
our annual Cruise
Raffle! This exciting
raffle funds our important
Silver Paws for Love
senior pet adoption
program. Every ticket
sold will assist in finding
homes for older pets
who would not otherwise
have a chance. (You
might almost say that
every ticket sold is a
“winning” ticket because
there are no losers
here!)
In the weeks ahead,
we welcome you to join
us at Foppiano
Vineyards for “Painting
Paws & Petite Sirah” in
Healdsburg, at
WOOFSTOCK! in Marin
County, and at the Pet
Expo in Santa Rosa. So,
if your dog has not yet
painted to support the
Paws for Love
Foundation, you have
plenty of chances to dip
the paws in the paint this
fall! You will go home
with a one-of-kind
masterpiece created by
your best friend, while
saving the lives of some
at-risk homeless pets.
What could be a better
way to spend the day?
Check out our Events in
the newsletter, on our
website, or follow us on
Facebook.
The homeless pets we
meet are a constant
source of inspiration for
the work we do, as are
the extraordinary people
who rescue them. In this
issue read about the
incredible rescue of the
little dog Nui. The
following is a quote by
her new mom, Mary Ann
Weber – she says it all:
“Nui has a great
outlook on life – ‘start
each day with a belly
rub, you don’t need a
reason to eat a special
treat, and always be
happy – today could be
your lucky day’”!

HOW WE HELP
Paws for Love provides a vital safety net
for shelter and rescue animals who need
assistance in finding a permanent home –
whether it be an injured homeless pet who needs surgery,
reimbursement of adoption fees for seniors, or other
rescue-related expenses. Many of these pets would not
make it without the funding we provide. They come to us
frightened, traumatized, and homeless through no fault of
their own. We believe they deserve a second chance. Our
annual gala is only one of our fundraising efforts throughout the year we participate in smaller events, and
with your support we can do even more! Fund more
surgeries, expand our senior-to-senior adoption program,
save the lives of more pets. You may help us by: donating,
volunteering, or by attending one of our events!

Nui’s Big Rescue
Mary Ann Weber had
just spent a week in
Santiago and was still
very distressed at seeing
the numerous homeless
dogs roaming the streets, when she continued her journey to Easter
Island>hoping to escape the sadness and the constant reminder of
the human disregard for these poor dogs living in such deplorable
conditions. But alas, Easter Island proved not much better. Stray
dogs roamed the streets of the town and camped outside of
restaurants, hoping for scraps of food to ease the pain of their
hunger. A little tan dog caught her attention – she was shy, dirty,
skinny, and injured. Someone had obviously cast her aside, as well
as mistreated and abused her severely – she was hobbling on only
three of her legs – the back right rear leg hanging uselessly in the
air. She was hungry, thirsty, and in need of some love, affection,
and basic care. It was highly doubtful she would survive much
longer on her own. But it was her lucky day>she’d met Mary Ann.
A friend offered her a bowl of food and she seemed so grateful,
politely soaking up all the affection they bestowed on her. When
Mary Ann awoke the next morning, the little dog was sleeping in
front of their door. Something about the look in her eyes broke her
heart and she knew she had to do something to help her.
She sought the help of a vet who assisted with the necessary
health certificate for transport to Santiago. Hours spent researching
the regulations to fly her to the US – using slow internet and
navigating Spanish-only websites – proved frustrating. The clock
was ticking>time was running out for the little dog and her only
hope of rescue.
Only one day away from her departure date, Mary Ann felt
disappointment and despair. She needed a leash and a crate, none
of which were readily available! A leash was finally fashioned from
the shoe string of a hiking boot; at the last minute, a rusty and filthy
crate was purchased for about $54 (US). And thanks to the
kindness of strangers, fellow travelers, and veterinarians near and
far – the little dog began her long journey “home.”
And she became known as “Nui”, meaning “big” in Rapa Nuian,
the language of the islanders on Easter Island -- or Rapa Nui, as it
is known locally. “Big” suits her just fine – Mary Ann says “she is
just a big dog in a little body, although she has grown from a skinny
18 pounds to a healthy 30 pounds!”
Nui handled the journey extremely well – from Santiago to Miami
to San Francisco! She was calm, settled and comfortable in her
crate. Upon their arrival at SFO, they were met by her new
extended family – and they were off to home in Sonoma County!
*** We met Nui at “Yappy Hour” at the Tasting Room on the Green,
where she created her first piece of art! Look for her painting in our
2015 “Paws for Love” art exhibit.
