BULLDOGS RETURN HOME HOSTING
WESTERN ILLINOIS AND EVANSVILLE
WHAT’S AHEAD
A busy week awaits the Drake men’s soccer team as the Bulldogs are
set to square off versus Western Illinois in their final non-conference
home game of the season on Tuesday (Oct. 21) before resuming league
play battling Evansville on Saturday (Oct. 25). Game times at the Cownie
Soccer Complex are set for 7:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively, versus
the Leathernecks and Purple Aces.
SCOUTING THE LEATHERNECKS
Western Illinois (8-4-1) comes to the Cownie Soccer Complex on
Tuesday (Oct. 21) owning a six-game winning streak in which the
Leathernecks have outscored the opposition, 10-0. Senior Charlie
Bales leads Western Illinois in goals (5), assists (2), points (12), shots
(35), shots on goal (21) and game-winning goals (3), while senior Mario
Alvarez and sophomore Jacob Bevan own three goals apiece. Senior
goalkeeper Yves Dietrich has made 61 saves for the Leathernecks en
route to recording a 0.67 goals against average and seven shutouts.

SCOUTING THE PURPLE ACES
Evansville (4-7-1, 2-1 MVC) enters action this Tuesday (Oct. 21) at
Louisville having won two of its last three games. The Purple Aces have
received a team-high five goals from senior Charlie Macias, while junior
Mark Gonzalez has added four goals. Junior Faik Hajderovic paces the
squad in shots (35), while senior goalkeeper Eric Teppen has made 58
saves, while owning two shutouts and a 1.67 goals against average.

SERIES HISTORY
Tuesday’s game is the 25th meeting between Drake and Western Illinois with
the Bulldogs owning a 16-7-1 series advantage. A year ago, Drake edged the
Leathernecks, 1-0, on Oct. 1, 2013, in Macomb, Ill.
The Bulldogs are battling Evansville for the 27th occasion with Drake maintaining
a 14-10-2 series lead, including a 4-0-1 mark in the last five encounters. Last fall,
the Bulldogs opened their conference slate registering a 4-1 triumph at Evansville
on Oct. 5, 2013.
THE COACHES
Western Illinois: Gary Johnson is in his 18th season as head coach of the
Leathernecks’ program, owning a 150-165-33 (.478) record. In 23 years as a head
coach Johnson maintains a 194-218-36 (.473) ledger.
Evansville: In his ninth season leading the Purple Aces is Mike Jacobs, who
maintains a 75-76-9 (.497) record. This fall is his 13th campaign as a head coach
and he has recorded a 104-113-14 (.481) ledger.
Drake: In his 17th year on the Drake sidelines as head coach is Sean Holmes,
who has a 139-145-37 mark (.491), including 217-171-39 (.554) overall, in his 21st
year as a head coach.
DRAKE HEAD COACH SEAN HOLMES
Sean Holmes was named head men’s soccer coach at Drake in 1998 and this
season marks his 17th campaign directing the Bulldogs’ fortunes.
During Holmes’ 17-year tenure, the Bulldogs have posted a 139-145-37 record,
building a legacy of excellence on Drake’s campus and in the Missouri Valley
Conference. In 21 years as a head coach he has amassed a 217-171-39 overall
record.
The 2013 campaign proved to be a series of ebbs and flows for the Bulldogs,
who finished the season with an 8-8-4 ledger, including a 3-1-2 second-place
effort in the Missouri Valley Conference. Drake rebounded after getting off to a
0-3-1 start to raise its ledger to 8-5-3 following a 2-1 victory in its home finale
versus Bradley before closing the campaign with a 0-3-1 record.
Nick Marshall and Alec Bartlett, who were named as first-team All-Missouri
Valley Conference men’s soccer selections, led seven Drake student-athletes who
garnered All-MVC accolades a year ago. Bryan Jantsch, Jarred Arde and Mueng
Sunday were tabbed second-team selections. Ben LeMay and Darrin MacLeod
along with Sunday were recognized as all-freshman team recipients.
Alec Bartlett was also tabbed a 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of
America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire All-Midwest Region second-team selection.
Off the field, Marshall became the third Bulldog to earn first-team 2013 Capital
One Academic All-America® Division I Men’s Soccer Team accolades, joining
Brian Wurst and Matt Kuhn in 2009 and 2011, respectively. He was the second
Drake men’s soccer student-athlete to collect national honors twice and the first
to do so in consecutive years. Additionally, Marshall and Thomas Schermoly
garnered first-team All-MVC Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete honors.
The NSCAA recognized Drake for its academic prowess by naming it as a
College Team Academic Award Winner for 2013. The Bulldogs were honored for
the ninth time in program history after registering a team grade point average of
3.22 for the 2012-13 academic year.
Holmes came to Drake after serving as the top assistant at conference-rival
Evansville from 1995-98. During his tenure at Evansville, the Aces compiled a 4730-6 record, winning the 1996 MVC championship. The team, which he helped
build, garnered an NCAA Tournament berth and a top 20 ranking.
Holmes, 49, was born in Switzerland and grew up in Ottawa, Ontario. An allOntario sweeper at Carleton University from 1983-87.
Holmes was head coach at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan., from 198993, compiling a 78-26-2 record, leading the 1991, 1992 and 1993 teams to
NAIA District 10 championships. Holmes also served as director of the Olympic
Development Program in Kansas for two years.
Holmes holds a USSF ‘A’ level coaching license and is a member of the Region
II staff for the Olympic Development Program.
Holmes and his wife, Dr. Carrie Holmes, reside in Des Moines with their three
sons, Matthew, Samuel and Andrew.

SIU EDWARDSVILLE REGISTERS 4-0 WIN OVER DRAKE
A trio of first-half goals proved too much for Drake to overcome as the
Bulldogs suffered a 4-0 setback at SIU Edwardsville this past Saturday
(Oct. 18).
Justin Bilyeu registered what proved to be the game-winning goal at
the 5:01 mark for the Cougars.
SIU Edwardsville also garnered tallies in the 37th (36:40) and 40th
(39:39) minutes, respectively, to assume a 3-0 lead at halftime.
The Cougars capped their scoring efforts at the 58:57 mark when
Christian Volesky registered his team-leading seventh goal of the
season.
SIU Edwardsville recorded a 15-2 advantage in shots on the evening,
including 6-0 on goal. Junior Eric Williams (West Des Moines, Iowa/
Valley) and sophomore James Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand)
accounted for the Bulldogs’ shots.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario/
Resurrection Catholic) collected two saves for Drake.

BULLDOG TIDBITS
• Since 2009, the Bulldogs own a 5-0-1 mark against Western Illinois,
including Drake’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, a 2-1 triumph on
Nov. 19, 2009, at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
• Saturday’s battle between Drake and Evansville will be a showdown
between a pair of goalkeepers in the Bulldogs’ Darrin MacLeod and
the Purple Aces’ Eric Teppen, who lead the Missouri Valley Conference
in saves per game at 4.85 and 4.83, respectively. In conference-only
tilts, the duo is also 1-2 with Teppen posting 6.00 saves a night and
MacLeod recording 5.33 stops per contest.
• Freshmen Gabe Edel (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) and Sam
Graving (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) combined to not only score the
game-winning tally in a 2-1 double-overtime victory past Loyola, but
the duo also registered the first collegiate points for both on the scoring
play.
• College Sports Madness named Gabe Edel its Madness Men’s Soccer
MVC Player of the Week on Oct. 14 after he registered the game-winning
goal for the Bulldogs in a 2-1 double-overtime win past Loyola.
• The victory for Drake over Loyola was the first in five overtime games
this season.
• Drake opened the MVC portion of its schedule dropping a 2-0 decision
at Missouri State to fall to 8-10-6 all-time in league openers. The setback
was the first for the Bulldogs in a conference opener in the last 13
seasons as Drake has posted a 6-0-6 mark since 2002.

game, respectively, to lead the MVC in overall contests, while
ranking second in league-only affairs. His 63 saves through
13 games is on pace to crack the top 10 on the single-season
saves list at Drake.
• Darrin MacLeod enters the Bulldogs’ game versus Western
Illinois (Oct. 21) ranked sixth, eighth, ninth, ninth and 10th,
respectively, on the career top 10 in shutouts (7), wins (11),
saves (139), minutes played (2,643:58) and games played
(30).
• Steven Enna (Overland Park, Kan./St. James Academy) has
found a niche in the Drake attack this season having scored
a pair of goals. He is leading the team in game-winning tallies
(1), while ranking third in points (4), fourth in shots (13) and
shots on goal (6).
• Sophomore James Wypych has provided an immediate
impact on the Bulldogs this season after transferring from
New Mexico. He has started all 13 contests for Drake and
leads the squad in goals (3), assists (2), points (8) and shots
on goal (9), while ranking second in shots (20).
• The Bulldogs have gotten a balanced scoring attack this
season as nine different Drake players have registered at
least a point in the first 13 games this fall. Freshmen Mason
Leonard (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) and
Steven Enna both recorded their first collegiate goals in
Drake’s 3-1 victory past Green Bay (Sept. 7), while Gabe
Edel did so versus Loyola (Oct. 11).
• Five true freshmen have earned playing time for the Bulldogs
this season, including Mason Leonard, Austin Errthum
(Kalona, Iowa/Mid-Prairie) and Steven Enna registering 13,
13 and six starts, respectively.
• Mason Leonard was selected as the Missouri Valley
Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week (Sept.
8) after leading the Bulldogs to their initial win of the season
registering his first collegiate points with a goal and an assist
in Drake’s 3-1 victory past Green Bay.
• James Wypych made the most of his Drake debut registering
a goal and an assist in the Bulldogs’ 2-2 double-overtime tie
versus Houston Baptist (Aug. 29).
• Eight Bulldogs have made their collegiate debuts this
season.
• Thomas Schermoly (Olathe, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) is
Drake’s active career leader in goals (6), points (15), while
Ben LeMay (Hugo, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) paces
the squad in assists (6). Eric Williams directs the team in
career shots with 46. Shermoly leads active Bulldogs on the
roster in games played (73), while Alec Bartlett (Overland
Park, Kan./St. James Academy) paces the squad in contests
started (52).
• The Bulldogs are 40-16-10 since 2006 in home games,
including 27-14-5 since 2009.
• Drake’s victory over No. 14 New Mexico a year ago was the
first for the Bulldogs over a ranked opponent since defeating
No. 13 Ohio State, 1-0 in overtime, in the second round of
the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

FROM A BULLDOG TO A DOCTOR
Thomas Schermoly has had a busy fall balancing his athletic
and academic endeavors along with preparing to take the
medical college admission test (MCAT) to pursue his career
dream of becoming a doctor. He recently took his tests and is
actively in the process of applying to medical schools.
THE TIME TO SHINE
The change of season has boded well for Drake over the
years as the flipping of the calendar from September to October
has ignited the Bulldogs into some of their best soccer of the
season. In Drake’s last 11 campaigns under head coach Sean
Holmes, the Bulldogs own a 39-25-10 record (.595) and have
posted seven consecutive winning months in October.

A LEGACY OF SUCCESS
Now in his 17th year as head coach at Drake, Sean Holmes has built the Bulldogs into a formidable foe for opponents.
Under his leadership, Drake has posted winning records in nine of the last 12 seasons and most recently in six of the last
seven campaigns. Since 2002, his squads have registered a 116-99-34 (.534) overall ledger. In Missouri Valley Conference
action over the same span, the Bulldogs own a 31-30-16 (.506) mark, including seven consecutive winning campaigns.
OVER OUR LAST FIVE GAMES
The Bulldogs own a 1-4 mark in their last five contests, with three of the five occurring away from home. Three Drake
players have registered a goal. Alec Bartlett and Eric Williams direct Drake with 10 and nine shots, respectively, in the five
games. Darrin MacLeod has been peppered by 79 shots in that span in goal and has recorded 27 saves.
IN OUR LAST MEETINGS
Drake 1, Western Illinois 0 (Oct. 1, 2013)
MACOMB, Ill. - Nick Marshall’s first-half goal proved to be all the scoring Drake needed as the Bulldogs registered a 1-0
victory past Western Illinois.
Marshall staked the Bulldogs to a 1-0 advantage on the strength of his second goal of the season at the 8:18 mark. Earning
the assists on the tally were Addison Eck and Mueng Sunday (Coralville, Iowa/Iowa City West).
Drake posted a 7-4 advantage in shots in the initial stanza, including 3-0 on goal.
The Leathernecks’ offense surged in the second half outshooting the Bulldogs, 12-3, en route to recording a 16-10 margin
for the game.
Darrin MacLeod made all of his game-high seven saves in the second half.
Jarred Arde led Drake with a game-high three shots.
Drake 4, Evansville 1 (Oct. 5, 2013)
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Thomas Schermoly’s three-goal performance sparked Drake to a come-from-behind 4-1 victory over
Evansville in the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference opener for both schools.
The hat trick was the first for a Bulldog since Jesse Baker recorded three goals in a 3-2 triumph past No. 16 Creighton on
Oct. 26, 2005.
The four goals for Drake marked the most in a conference game for the Bulldogs since posting a 4-1 win at Eastern Illinois
on Nov. 4, 2009.
Evansville assumed a 1-0 lead in the affair after Patrick Hodges headed in a corner kick from Faik Hajderovic at the 7:54
mark.
The Purples Aces maintained their advantage until Schermoly evened the affair at one connecting on his first goal of
the season in the 26th minute (25:10). Ben LeMay played the ball into Schermoly in the box, who took the pass and beat
Evansville goalkeeper Eric Teppen from six yards out.
The score was tied at halftime, despite the Purple Aces owning an 11-5 advantage in shots in the initial stanza.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good when Schermoly delivered what proved to be the game-winning tally in the 49th minute
(48:11). Austin Reutzel (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) played a long ball over the defense that Schermoly converted into a
2-1 Drake advantage.
The Bulldogs extended their margin to 3-1 after Danton Irelan recorded his fourth goal of the year at the 57:46 mark.
Earning the assist on the tally was Bryan Jantsch.
Schermoly capped off his scoring explosion with his third goal of the afternoon in the 80th minute (79:16). Brandon Welter
(Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) was credited with the assist on the score.
Evansville posted a 21-9 advantage in shots in the game, including 9-5 on goal. Drake made the most of its opportunities
as four of the Bulldogs’ five shots on goal found the back of the net.
Schermoly led the Drake attack with a team-high three shots.
Darrin MacLeod made a game-high six saves for the Bulldogs. Drake benefitted from a pair of team saves that thwarted
Evansville scoring opportunities.
BULLDOGS HONORED
A trio of Bulldogs were honored when College Sport Madness released its men’s soccer MVC preseason team. Darrin
MacLeod was tabbed as a first-team honoree, while Alec Bartlett and sophomore Mueng Sunday were chosen as a
second-team selections.
DRAKE MIXING YOUNG AND OLD IN 2014
The Bulldogs enter the 2014 campaign looking to build upon an 8-8-4 mark last season, including a second-place 3-1-2
ledger in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Drake is seeking to integrate 12 newcomers this season onto a roster that boasts 10 returning lettermen from a year
ago.
Included among the returnees are Drake’s six starters from the close of the 2013 campaign, led by a quartet of All-Missouri
Valley Conference performers in redshirt junior Alec Bartlett, redshirt sophomores Darrin MacLeod and Ben LeMay and
sophomore Mueng Sunday.
Bartlett was named a first-team All-MVC selection, while Sunday was tabbed a second-team honoree. LeMay, MacLeod
and Sunday were all recognized as all-freshman team recipients.
Complimenting that quartet is the return of senior Thomas Schermoly and junior Austin Reutzel, both starters in 2013.
Drake also will welcome the return of redshirt junior Kyle Whigham (Overland Park, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas), who missed
nearly the entire 2013 campaign due to injury.
BULLDOGS DUO EARNS PRESEASON ALL-MVC ACCOLADES
Drake redshirt junior Alec Bartlett and redshirt sophomore Darrin MacLeod were among 12 players tabbed by a vote of
the seven Missouri Valley Conference head men’s soccer coaches as All-MVC Preseason first-team selections, the league
announced on Aug. 20.

A first-team All-MVC honoree a season ago, Bartlett has started all 39 games of his Drake career, including 20 last season.
In 2013, he registered a goal and an assist on 13 shots en route to sparking the Bulldogs to five shutouts.
MacLeod started 15 of the 17 games he played in last fall en route to recording 76 saves, five shutouts and a 1.15 goals
against average. He finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the conference in save percentage (.809), goals against
average and saves per game (4.47) en route to being named to the MVC All-Freshman team.

Drake was picked to finish fourth in the MVC Coaches Preseason poll with 31 points. Pegged ahead of the Bulldogs were
league favorite Missouri State (46 points), followed by Evansville (37 points), Bradley (32 points), Drake, SIU Edwardsville
(23 points), Loyola (16 points) and Central Arkansas (9 points).
WINS VERSUS LOSSES
In their three victories, the Bulldogs are collecting 13.0 shots, 4.3 corner kicks and 6.0 saves, while allowing the opposition
to register 15.7 shots, 7.3 corner kicks and 5.0 saves. In its eight losses this season, Drake is averaging 7.8 shots, 4.3 corner
kicks and 4-6 saves, while surrendering 15.4 shots, 5.4 corner kicks and 2.5 saves.
ON THIS DATE IN BULLDOG HISTORY
For the fifth time Drake will play a game on Oct. 21 when it battles Western Illinois on Tuesday. The Bulldogs own a 3-1
mark on the date with victories past Avila (2-1 in 1987), Missouri State (3-1 in 2006) and Eastern Illinois (3-0 in 2009).
The Bulldogs encounter their fifth contest on Oct. 25 when the team squares off against Evansville. Drake is 3-1 on the
date with wins over Missouri State (1-0 in 1992), SIU Edwardsville (2-1 in 1995) and Bradley (2-0 in 2002).
NATIONALLY SPEAKING
The Bulldogs are nationally-ranked in several categories this season. As a team, Drake is 23rd in saves per game (5.00).
Individually, goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod is rated 18th in total saves (63) and 26th in saves per contest (4.85).
