REDWOOD PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL
“Partners in Learning”
17th October 2014
Dear Families,
Welcome back to term 4, and after a restful holiday, I hope you are ready
for the usual business of the last term of the year.
Please check the term’s calendar and our newsletters to keep you up to
date with the many events we have organised as the year comes to a
close.
We finished term 3 with a number of events, that once again highlight the
many talents of our students.
Festival of Music
On Friday, 19th Sept, our choir performed at the Festival Theatre. Many of
our students were in the front row, and so their parents could easily see
them. The program featured the specially commissioned song “Flight”
written by noted Australian composer Paul Jarman. It explored the history,
science and expansion of flying.
As mentioned in previous newsletters Tayla-Marie, Daniela and Adam and
Megan had extra roles in other night performances. We were lucky on our
night to hear one of our students, Stephanie, sing a solo.
On behalf of the school community, I would like to thank Rhoda Emerson
for her hard work, dedication and enthusiasm for training the choir.
I would like to also thank staff “behind the scenes” including Lyn Marshall
(organiser extraordinaire), Chad Lofts, Mike Cousins and Matt Mullen.
Snow White and the Magnificent Seven Musical
Congratulations to Amy Cobb and her team who performed this very funny
play. Many of the practices were held at lunch times.
Well done to the cast: Daniela B, Megan F, Louisa S, Alecia V, David L,

sandpit was raked.

RPPS Reminders
1.
Over this term, a number of events will be held at our school. When you park around the
school, please ensure you do not park across driveways of residents in the area.
2.
At Redwood Park School, we do discourage individual families bringing lolly bags or cake to
celebrate an individual student’s birthday with the class. This is because we have a number
of students with food allergies. If items are brought, we ask that the food items are given
out at the end of the day and therefore can be taken home to consume.
3.
Update on our school bell times—from this term, we will now ring a REMINDER bell 2
minutes prior to the end of recess (11.18am) and 2 minutes prior to the end of lunch
(1.43pm), to ensure our children go back to the classroom on time. Our normal school bell
times are: 8.50am start of school; 11.00am start of recess; 11.20am end of recess;
1.15pm start of lunch; 1.45pm end of lunch; 3.15pm end of school day.
Out of Hours School Sports—Netball & Basketball
Term 1, 2015 sees the start of the new season for Netball and Basketball. The season runs across
Term 1 & 2.
This competition is open to students in years 3-7. Students in year 3 must be turning eight years
of age during the season. If you are interested in your child participating, please get them to
collect a nomination form from the front office or contact the school and leave your childs name.
Heather will the organise the forms for them as soon as possible.
Forms will be available from Monday week 2 and will close on Thursday week 5, (forms and
payment need to be returned to Heather by this day). All attempts
will be made to place teams, however if there are not enough players
or a nominated coach/team manager, it will not go ahead and
payment will be returned to your child.

Preschool News
This year in the Preschool we have a little boy called Alex who is very special to us all.
At the start of 2013 Alex was diagnosed with a brain tumour. The tumour blocked the supply of
blood to Alex’s optic nerves which caused them to die and Alex to lose his sight. He had an
operation and underwent 7 months of chemotherapy. The tumours are now growing again and
Alex must undergo more treatment.
Alex has become an integral part of the Preschool community. Alex has taught us that even in
adversity we need to keep trying, reinforced acceptance of difference in all of us, and reminded us
how precious life is.
We would like to show our support for Alex and his family as they go through these trying times.
We will be hosting ‘Little Heroes Day’ on the 3rd November to raise funds for the ‘Alex’s Playground’
Initiative to help show our support as a community (see flyer out in week 2).
Bec Sykes (a Preschool Parent) from Arbonne International is also giving us an opportunity to
support Alex’s family. Bec is running a promotion for which all profits will go to Alex’s family.
More information is located on the last page of this newsletter and catalogues are available from
the Preschool and School front office.
2015 at Redwood Park School
As we begin the task of organising classes for 2015, there are 2 ways you can
help us. Please ...
1.
Fill in the first slip below and return to the school as soon as possible, if your
child/ren will not be attending our school in 2015.
or
2.
Fill in the second slip if there is information you would like us to take into
consideration when placing your child but remember this is not a request
for a particular teacher, and again return to school.
Please return either or both of these forms by Friday 31st October.
Your support in both these matters is greatly appreciated.
Regards Wink

Social Media issues
It has come to our attention that students at our school are using the app Kik to
communicate with friends and others. This app was designed for users seventeen years
and older but is being used by primary aged children.
The following information comes from a Sydney Morning Herald article warning on the
dangers of Kik.
Kik is a free texting app used by more than 50 million people around the world that
enables users to connect with strangers. Although rated for people aged 17 and older,
experts say children aged 11-15 are its main users.
The app can be installed on iPod touch and iPad devices as well as smart phones. Instead
of using phone numbers or real names to contact each other, each Kik member has a
user name. Conversations and images can't be viewed publicly, which makes it much
more difficult for parents to monitor Kik than Facebook or Twitter.
Cyber safety expert Ross Bark said Kik and Instagram were a ''dangerous combination''
for teenagers, who post photographs publicly on Instagram and then invite viewers to
''Kik me'' privately to chat.
''It's hidden to most parents,'' NSW Police Force social media spokesman Strath Gordon
said. ''Young people may not even know who they are communicating with. No one is
using their real names and that's a problem …''
A Google search on Kik has located police warnings from around the world about this
app. These warnings include complaints regarding offenders requesting explicit images
from children, online grooming and sexting. In some instances, children have been
coerced into meeting with strangers.
Parents are urged to be vigilant in monitoring the social media sites visited by their
children.

中国文化早晨学前教育
On Wednesday 3rd of September, we held a special morning session to celebrate Chinese
tradition and enhance our learning about this amazing culture.
The children did some Chinese cooking with Katherine’s mother (Katherine is a preschool
student and her family have Chinese heritage) along with several other activities to help us
experience a snapshot of China.
The activities included making a Chinese dragon puppet, a Chinese drum and fan, doing
Chinese writing and helping to prepare a Chinese meal for all to taste.
Everyone was able to try using chopsticks and taste dumplings, spring rolls, special fried rice
and moon cakes.
We listened to talks about China, listened to traditional music
on You Tube, viewed artefacts from China, used ‘Sparklers’ for
fireworks and flew kites.
This was a fascinating experience for everyone and provided
opportunities for children to explore and respect the diversity of
cultures.
