Research supports the importance of oral
language as both the foundation for the
development of literacy skills and a strong
indicator of reading, writing and overall
academic achievement.
The Department of Education, Training
and Employment in conjunction with Queensland Health and Redland City Council
has developed an oral language app called SPEAK (Speaking Promotes Education
and Knowledge). The SPEAK app is a proactive approach to developing speaking
and listening skills in the early years of a child’s life.
SPEAK provides lots of fun, free activities,

ideas and information or parents, carers and
educators to support and nurture oral
language development in children from 0 – 6 years
of age. There are multiple activities within each age group
to help boost children's speaking and listening ability. The
information and activities were developed by the Department with the
help of speech pathologists, educators and health professionals.
We encourage our families to download the SPEAK app to help ‘make chatter
matter’. The SPEAK app is free to download from the iTunes store and Google Play.

products to keep them in tip top sizzling action. The timing of this purchase could not have been better as we prepare for both
the Junior and Senior Soirees and the host of events that take place in term 4 that require lean, clean cooking machines.

From the P&C
The year has almost flown by and Term 4 is shaping up to be a very busy one for the school – so too for the P&C. Just prior to the
holidays several members had the opportunity to attend the P&C Qld State Conference. Whilst spending 2 days locked in a
conference room talking about schools, fundraising and compliance issues may not sound like fun, it was actually a rewarding
experience and we are bursting with new ideas as well as a long list of “To Do’s” with regards to systems and operations within
our organisation. As a result of the information and inspirations we gathered during our time there we are endeavouring to
make our P&C as efficient and productive as possible. Most of these changes will occur behind the scenes so you may not see
any changes but trust me – there’s plenty going on in the background!
Another thing you might think where nothing is happening are the building projects we announced early in the year and thought
would not only be underway but most likely finished and operational by now. I’m sure all of you would understand there are
processes and procedures for the Department we need to follow with regards to any such major works. Although we now have
the go-ahead for the three main projects (new playgrounds, new tuckshop, new entry to the pool), we have only just found out
that unfortunately we are required to go through a formal open tender process. Previously we were given professional advice
that this was not required and we could get 3 private quotes to proceed. Because of this misinformation a lot of time has been
wasted and we are experiencing a further delay while this process is completed.
All I can say is that the P&C Executive has been working very closely with the School Management Team and we are all
committed to having these projects started and completed as soon as possible. To dispel some of the school-yard rumours..…
NO we are not waiting till the holidays to start if we can get things moving quickly….. NO we have not cancelled any of them…..
YES your hard work from all the fundraising WILL come to fruition.
The good news is we are not letting the hold up on these three major projects stop us from continuing with our rolling plan for
the school, upgrading play spaces, classrooms, buildings and grounds. We would love to have new members join us in this
journey – getting the information direct from a P&C meeting is a very satisfying way to keep up to date with all that is going
on. As various positions will become vacant at the end of this year, we would like to send out a request for parents to think
about how they might be able to make a difference to their child’s educational experience. You will be surprised what talents
you have that we need and you will never regret putting your hand up – particularly when your little Johnny or Mary puffs their
chest our and proudly tells all that you are the keeper of the money, or sell the most ice blocks at tucky or helped build a garden
or something. It is a priceless return for your efforts.
Lastly I’d like to thank everyone involved (big or small!) in fundraising for our school, including every sub-committee as well as
our dedicated grants team. We recently received a $35,000 grant towards the new pool entry, as well as a grant for a new
freezer in the Eagles Nest and the P&C have just purchased two massive BBQs in time for the Junior Soiree tomorrow night. Like I
said, there is movement behind the scenes!

Annual Invitational Relay Carnival
The Queensland Primary School Swimming Committee’s Annual Invitational Relay Carnival will be held at
the Chandler Aquatic Centre on Friday 21 November, commencing at 6.30pm. Schools from Metropolitan
North, Metropolitan East, Metropolitan West, Darling Downs, Sunshine Coast, South Coast and Wide Bay
are eligible to nominate teams.
Interested students who are born 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002 are asked to submit their 50m swimming times to Mr Summers by

Friday 31 October. A small fee will apply to competing students.
Annual School Swimming Carnivals
During Week 9 (December 1-5) EJ will hold its annual swimming carnivals for 2014. Below are some important points about EJ
swimming carnivals.









Prep-Yr2 carnival has an emphasis on participation and enjoyment and there are races catering for all children.
Yr3-7 carnival also doubles as a selection trial for the 2015 interschool competition.
Yr3-7 students will be required to trial for all events during PE lessons and lunch times as shown in the table below.
Yr3-7 students will be required to wear a swimming cap and swim shirt during all swimming trials.
8 year old (2006) students will compete in 25m events.
9 years and older students will be eligible to trial for 50m events. The top 16 competitors in each age group and stroke
will compete in 50m while all remaining students will compete in 25m events.
Each stroke has a separate 100m event. This event is open to all ages and only the 8 fastest competitors will compete in
this event.
Swimming trials will commence in Week 5 with backstroke and breaststroke trials taking place. During Week 6 freestyle
and butterfly trials will commence.
Please note that the only accepted times will be those taken during school trials.

Every two years Eagle Junction State School participates in Jump Rope for Heart. Students will be receiving information on how
they can help support the Heart Foundation in raising funds to help this worthy cause. Lunch time skipping sessions will be held

Year 2HE News
We began fourth term by welcoming Rehan
Vahora to Eagle Junction State School and to
our class of 2HE. We are very pleased to have
Rehan in our class.
In English this term we are studying the genre
of narratives. We are enjoying listening to lots
of different narratives and exploring their
structure,
characterisation
and
plot
development. We are specifically looking at the
sequence of events in narratives. We have
studied lots of different narratives which
contain these ‘events’ and we are learning to
write new events which could fit into the stories.
We are enjoying using rich vocabulary and
‘storybook’ language.
In Mathematics, we have begun maths
rotations, which we enjoy doing three times
each week. In maths rotations, each of our five
maths groups moves between five different activities. The activities include explorations in spatial relations, shape, money, time
and number. We enjoy using our ipads in maths rotations which have good apps for practising our number facts.
In Science this term, we are studying Environmental Science. We are enjoying learning about the need to protect the
environment, by looking after the atmosphere, the water and the soil. We are alarmed at the number of species which are either
endangered or extinct. We are learning that as individuals we can all look after the environment by remembering the principles
of ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.’
In Technology we are studying gadgets. We are learning about inventions and how these inventions help us to do everyday
chores more easily, more safely and more quickly. We will all be doing an Oral Language Presentation about the invention of a
gadget of our choice.
In Geography we are learning about ‘Place’ and the way in which we are all connected by the places in which we live.
We are all continuing to enjoy learning and working hard in 2HE. We all feel that this year is going very quickly and we have
decided that this is because we are all having so much fun!

Year Three Poetry Workshop with Helen Ross
This term Year Three is learning about poetry.
On Wednesday 15 October Brisbane poet Helen Ross went to each year three classroom and taught us some essential poetry
rules. These include every poem doesn’t have to rhyme, alliteration, onomatopoeia and that paragraphs in poems are called
stanzas. Miss Helen helped us write a clerihew which was fun.
We all enjoyed the ‘thought shower’ and were inspired to write our own poetry. Miss Helen kindly donated one of her poetry
books to the library.

A clerihew is a funny poem about specific people such as your
parents, teacher, best friend, pet or anyone else you can think of.
It is a four line poem with an AABB rhyming pattern. The first line
names a person and the second line ends with something that
rhymes with the name of the person.
