Registration: 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.
Program: All Scouts 9:00 a.m. – Noon
Lunch: Noon – 1:00 p.m.
Boy Scouts: 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
Thank you for registering for the Mining & Geology Day event. This guide is
provided to address some of the basic information and frequently asked questions
regarding the event.
This is an annual event presented by Vulcan Materials Company and the San DiegoImperial Council, Boy Scouts of America. This year we are adding an additional merit
badge and changing the name to Mining & Geology Day! This event provides
opportunities to learn about mining and geology as well as Scouting fun and fellowship.
There will be lots of rocks and really BIG trucks!
Basic Information:
Registration:
The cost for Mining & Geology Day is $10.00 per participating Scout. Parents
accompanying their Scouts are free. Registration can be done on the San DiegoImperial Council’s website at http://sdicbsa.org/ACS/.
Registration is broken down as either Cub Scout/ Webelos Scout or Boy Scout. There is
a limit of 300 Scouts: 200 Cub Scout/Webelos and 100 Boy Scout spots are available.
*Cub Scouts and Webelos may register as individuals. However, a parent/ guardian
must also register with them and attend the event. Since this is considered a Scouting
event, all Cub Scouting rules apply, including the one-to-one Scout/parent ratio
requirement.
YOU WILL BE AT A ROCK QUARRY:
NO OPEN-TOE SHOES - NO SANDALS - NO HEELS
*Boy Scout aged registration must be done as a troop/team/crew. Boy Scouts will be
required to have proper adult leadership in attendance, as they would for any Boy Scout
outing.
No Scouts should be without an adult in accompaniment on-site at any time.
Location:
Mining & Geology Day will be held at Vulcan Materials Company, Carroll Canyon
facility, located in the Mira Mesa community at 10051 Black Mountain Rd., San Diego,
CA 92126.
Staff:
Registered adult leaders and Boy Scout/Venturers (ages 14 and over) who would like to
be part of the staff for this day of fun and education are needed. If you are interested in

Parking:
Parking will be available at the quarry. Shuttle service from the parking lot to the
program area will be available. Be advised you will be parking and walking on the
unpaved ground. PLEASE WEAR APPROPRIATE SHOES!
Food:
Vulcan Materials Company has generously agreed to provide a kid-friendly lunch at no
additional charge. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring water bottles. Drinking
water will be available throughout the day for you to refill your water bottles. No
additional food or beverages will be available for purchase. You may want to bring
snacks, especially if you have younger Scouts.
Alcohol and Tobacco:
Vulcan Materials Company and Boy Scout policy do not permit alcohol or smoking at
the event. Alcohol and smoking will not be permitted anywhere on the site.
Courtesy and Safety:
Please do your part to ensure a safe, accident-free Mining & Geology Day. We must
exemplify the Scout Law at all times. The event is being held in a working quarry; plan
accordingly. NO ROCK THROWING! No Scouts without adult supervision at anytime
while on site.

Program Opportunities:
Mining & Geology Day provides an educational opportunity that introduces participants
to the science of Mining and Geology. Cub Scouts, Webelos Scouts, Boy Scouts and
Ventures are encouraged to view displays, activities and classes. Cub Scouts who
participate the full day can qualify for the Cub Scout Geology Belt Loop and Academics
Pin, Webelos Geology Activity Pin, depending on where they are in Scouting, and other
Scout requirements. Boy Scout, Varsity and Venture Scouts who participate in the full
day’s instruction will be able to earn both the Mining in Society and the Geology Merit
Badges, provided they complete the requirements.
Participants and their supervising adult leaders/ parents will be divided up into 4 groups
and will rotate between stations on an organized schedule. Arriving late or leaving early
may impact what achievements your Scout may qualify to earn.
While all registrants will have the opportunity to participate in this event, belt
loops, activity pins and merit badges may only be earned by Scouts registered with
the BSA. No awards will be provided at the event and must be obtained by the
Scout’s Pack, Troop, or Crew.
Tips: If you are a Boy Scout planning on earning the Mining in Society &/or Geology
Merit Badge, don’t forget the following:
- Be sure to get your Scout Master’s approval and 2 blue cards ahead of time.
- Because 2 merit badges are being offered, review of the requirements and the
program book for the merit badges prior to coming to the event is strongly
encouraged. This will allow you to anticipate what will be expected of you and
help you understand the materials and information presented at the event.
- Print your Merit Badge Worksheets and fill out as much information in advance
as you can. Priority check-out will be given to those Scouts with completed Merit
Badge Worksheets.
- Bring signed Blue Cards, a clip board and several pencils, just in case. (Be
Prepared!)
- Come with a positive attitude and be ready to learn and have fun!
What to bring?- for every participant (adult and youth):
- Appropriate clothing for being in a rock quarry (You may get dirty.) Class A
uniforms are encouraged.

- Hat, sun screen, water bottle, hiking appropriate closed-toed shoes. We will be
outside all day.
- There will be plenty of chances to take pictures, so you may want to bring a
camera.
- A signed copy of your Photo Release (attached).
- Snacks. There will be no food available, other than lunch.
- While a “kid-friendly” lunch will be provided by Vulcan Materials Company. If
you have food allergies, or prefer a more adult oriented meal, you may want to
bring your own lunch.
What NOT to bring?
- Tools (real or toy) or knives
- Pets (dogs, cats, horses, dinosaurs, gorillas, hippogriffs, etc)
- Bikes or skateboards
- Electronics (games, iPods, iPads, etc)
- No open-toed shoes, sandals, Krocs or high heels.
