This was the first time they attended this event since 2006. In the preliminary competition, they placed 5th. In the finals, they placed 2nd in the AAA-Large Division and 6th overall in the festival. Homecoming Dance: The 2014 Homecoming Dance - "Dancing in the Rain" is Saturday, October 25 from 8:00-11:00pm in the LC Field House. Ti-Girls Dance Camp: The LC Drill Team is putting on their annual Ti-Girls Dance Camp for all girls grades 1-8. The camp is on Saturday, November 1 from 10:00am-1:00pm in the LC Field House. The participants will learn moves, dances, and cheers from the LC Drill Team members with a performance for their parents at the end of camp. We has been chosen to the Campus Ready diagnostic survey conducted by the Educational Policy Improvement Center (EPIC). All students will be taking this survey online in the library in one of their classes during the week of October 27-31. The goal of the survey is to measure the level of preparedness in multiple areas of college and career readiness. The results will be used to focus and fill gaps in students understanding of key aspects of postsecondary readiness. Spokane Public Schools has a clear focus on student success after high school in Technical Schools (Military), 2-year Colleges and 4-year College experiences (T-2-4). This will be the 5th European trip for us and we are excited to take your student on the adventure of a lifetime! The two week trip organized by WorldStrides will include: Paris, France - Lucerne, Switzerland - Munich, Germany - and - Prague, Czech Republic and many points in between! Students/parents who register before November 15 will receive a $150 discount (November 15 is also the last day to apply for a need-based scholarship). Knitting Club Collecting Donations: The LC Knitting Club is collecting hats and scarves for the homeless population in Spokane through Project Warm Up, sponsored by the YMCA, through October 30. GEAR UP for Academic Success: Our new GEAR UP Academic Success Center (ASC) is open and th th ready to start helping students! COLLEGE & CAREER INFORMATION SAT Saturday Testing Information: The SAT will be offered on Saturdays at LC this year: - November 8, 2014 (late registration deadline 10/28*) - December 6, 2014 (registration deadline 11/6, late registration deadline 11/24*) - March 14, 2015 (registration deadline 2/13, late registration deadline 3/3*) - May 2, 2015 (registration deadline 4/6, late registration deadline 4/21*) - June 6, 2015 (registration deadline 5/8, late registration deadline 5/27*) Late registration incurs an additional $28 fee. Students register for exams directly on the SAT website, www.sat.collegeboard.org. Most students take the SAT during their junior or senior year in high school. At least half of all students take the SAT twice - in the spring of their junior year and in the fall of their senior year. Most students also improve their score the second time around. The SAT test costs $52.50 per test. If you cannot afford to pay the fee, you can see your counselor to apply for a fee waiver before you register online (click here for fee waiver information: http://sat.collegeboard.org/register/sat-fee-waivers). Note: All LC Juniors will take the SAT test during the school day on April 15 for free. More details coming closer to the test date. FREE SAT Prep Program: We are excited to offer LC students an innovative and exciting program designed to help them become more college and career ready! The Naviance Family Connection Program will not only help our students meet this goal, but also provides them with a FREE SAT prep program! Have your student login and check out all the great things Naviance Family Connection can offer them! Changes are coming to the SAT in 2016: When students open their SAT test books in spring 2016, they’ll encounter an SAT that is more focused and useful than ever before. The full specifications of the exam along with extensive sample items for each section will be available on April 16, 2014. Major changes are: • There will be three sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, Math, and the Essay. • The length of the SAT will be about three hours, with an added 50 minutes for the essay. • The exam will once again be scored on a 400- to 1600-point scale. The Evidence-Based Reading and Writing • • section and the Math section will each be scored on a 200- to 800-point scale. Scores for the Essay will be reported separately. Tiger Closet Needs: The LC Tiger Closet provides students an opportunity to select free new and gently used clothes. The Closet is in need of the following items (donations can be brought to the Public Office): - Winter coats (boys and girls) - Pants (girls) - Shoes in large sizes (boys and girls) Free Microsoft Software for Students: In an effort to help prepare students for the technology skills required in the workforce, Microsoft announced Student Advantage. Students can now use Office every day for school work and activities that are most important to them. Office not only helps students stay organized and get their work done today but at the same time develops skills that will be required when they enter the work force. There is no cost to download and run the full versions of Office provided in the Student Advantage program. You can also access the Microsoft Mobile apps on smart phones or tablets. Enrolled students at LC are eligible to install the full version of Office Pro Plus as part of our Office 365 Student email subscription. Below are instructions on how to install Office Pro Plus on a Windows 7 machine. The installation process is similar for Windows 8 and the Mac OS. Procedure Using the computer you want to install Office on do the following: Login to your Office 365 email account at: https://login.microsoftonline.com (If you do not remember how to log in to your Office 365 email account, go to: http://www.spokaneschools.org/Page/23164). Once logged in, click on the setting’s gear in the upper right corner and select Office 365 Settings. On the left side, select Software. The system will detect the operating system you are running and recommend the latest version of Office for you to install. Once you verify the version to install, click the Install button. If you are prompted to Run or Save the file, select Run. Microsoft Office will install in the background and after a few minutes you will receive notice stating "Welcome to your new Office." At this screen click Next. Follow the prompts through the installation, selecting the options you want. When all options are selected, a video will play explaining some of the features of Office. Once the video is done, it will ask you to Sign in. At the Sign in prompt, enter your [email protected] email address, and click Next. These calculators (model TI 30-XS Multiview) do everything students need except graphing. For students in Algebra, this calculator will be sufficient for their needs. The calculators are available for $14 in the Bookroom (regular price in stores is $18). Safe Driving Reminder: With school back in session, please remember that the speed limit in school zones is 20 miles/hour or slower. This applies not only to the LC campus area but to the Hart Field/Sac/Jefferson/Camp Hutton neighborhood. It is important that we are good citizens and abide by the traffic laws meant to keep children safe. Backpacks Needed: If you have any new or gently used backpacks, we would be happy to accept the donation! You can bring the backpacks to the LC Public Office and we will distribute them to students in need. Thank you! Donate to our Student Assistance Fund to Help Fellow Students: When you come in to pay student fees in the Business Office, please consider donating to the Student Assistance fund. This fund helps needy students pay for the required class fees and athletic fees. Every dollar donated goes directly to LC students. BrightArrow: Learn about the new Parent Notification System called BrightArrow that will send email updates and text messages for emergency communications and important updates from LC. You can choose what phone number and/or email address you prefer for notifications and sign up to receive text notifications. Bright Arrow will not replace the LC News You Can Use, but will be an additional tool to help us communicate with our community. Go to BrightArrow to learn how to update your information. The LC Tiger Pantry: Lewis and Clark now has a FREE food outlet for our students to access canned and boxed food items for use at home. (We cannot dispense food for lunch). The LC Tiger Pantry is located in the underground parking garage around the corner from the Tiger Closet. This Pantry was set up for LC students to access free food to take home and help their families with major meals. Currently, they can access this resource during the day with a staff member or a counselor. We are inviting students/staff/parents to donate needed food items to our Pantry all year long. We are needing high protein items (peanut butter, packages of noodles, beans, canned vegetables, etc). We also could use the cloth reusable grocery bags and strong paper bags.
