Setting and Reporting The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote regional cooperation for inclusive economic and social development in the Asian and Pacific region. The role of ESCAP as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership, through its analytical, normative and technical cooperation, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region. This position is located in the Conference and Documentation Services Section. The incumbent reports to the Chief, Editorial Unit. Responsibilities Under the general direction of the Chief, Conference and Documentation Services Section (CDSS), and direct supervision of the Chief, Editorial Unit, the incumbent is required to perform the following functions: • • • • • Edits texts of a specialized or technical nature in order to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice. Consults with author departments and carries out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors. Checks his/her language version against the language of the original draft, redrafts incorrect or unclear passages and translates and inserts any passage that has been omitted. Provides authors or others submitting documentation with information on specific aspects of editorial policy and practice and assists them in the preparation of manuscripts. Performs other related duties as required. Competencies • Professionalism: Knowledge of editorial policies, practices and research techniques. Solid writing and analytical abilities with sensitivity to nuance. Ability to spot errors and inconsistencies in a text. Education A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Work Experience A minimum of two years of experience in editing is required. Relevant IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and web-based applications, required. Languages A perfect command of the English language, which must be the candidate's main language Assessment Method Qualified applicants will be evaluated through a competency-based interview and/or other assessment methods. Special Notice Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her.
