I am delighted to present our new syndicates to race in 2015 which you will see from the enclosed follow a similar pattern to previous years with some exciting changes to the trainer combinations. Both Charlie Hills and Ralph Beckett already train for HTR but this is the first time that I have put them into our yearling syndicates. Both have proved to be extremely popular with our owners and so teaming them up with William Haggas and Andrew Balding respectively to my eye looks really exciting. The Melbourne Syndicate sees us once again combining trainers in the UK, where the horses will be campaigned for their first few seasons, and Chris Waller in Australia. Opinion, our flag bearer in Australia earned a staggering AU$ 350,000 in his first season there so we are naturally keen to race a few more "down under"! The trips to Chantilly to see our two horses there have also been hugely popular and so The Rosebery Syndicate which puts Freddy Head alongside Roger Varian is one which will combine success on the racecourse with a touch of romance en Paris! Over the past few years we have seen a continued rise in yearling averages at all principal sales throughout Europe and this has been something that all of us at Highclere have been concerned about. I have therefore given John more fire power by upping the average buying price of the yearlings for these new syndicates which you will see has meant a small increase in the share prices but I do believe this to be essential if we are to maintain our record of providing owners with top class animals. There has been plenty of excitement this season with Telescope flying the flag at the very highest level and a host of two year old winners led by Beacon who stormed to a fortunate victory at Doncaster in The Flying Childers Stakes (Gr 2). I do hope you enjoy this morning’s parade and that one or more of these new syndicates will appeal. As always please don't hesitate to speak to me or my team should you have any questions on the horses or the syndicates. Finally, may I wish you all the very best of luck with the coming season. The Hon. Harry Herbert, Chairman highclere yearling parade book_28989_Layout 1 16/10/2014 11:37 Page 2 Highclere T H E S A L I S B U R Y S Y N D I C AT E The 3rd Marquess of Salisbury served for three separate terms as Prime Minister. His main interests lay in foreign affairs, especially Africa. It was under his direction that the colony of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) was established with its capital city named Salisbury. He was a well-loved statesman notably establishing the Free Education Act, which abolished fees for primary education. He was the last peer to serve as a Prime Minister. Richard Hannon Jnr took over the training licence from his father at the beginning of 2014 having understudied for many years. Richard Hannon Snr was crowned Champion trainer twice in the last three years and it hasn’t taken long for Richard Jnr to continue the run of success, with five Group 1 wins to his name already this year including The QIPCO 2000 Guineas and he looks likely to be crowned Champion Trainer in 2014 as the season draws to a close. It has been a vintage year in which Hannon has enjoyed multiple Group victories with a host of talented juveniles including the lightening quick Tiggy Wiggy, who signed off her season in style with a pillar to post success in The Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1). Although Snr may have taken a back seat he is still very much involved and his experience will continue to prove invaluable. The welcome for our owners at Herridge remains as warm as ever with a glass never left empty for long! During his ten years as Prime Minister Pelham passed the Consolidation Act, the Jew Act of 1753 and the Marriage Act of 1753, which enumerated the minimum age of consent for marriage. He also altered the British calendar to make New Year’s Day become January 1st. Richard Fahey has been training for twenty one years and remains a force to be reckoned with this season, sitting third behind Mark Johnston and Richard Hannon in the trainer rankings on number of winners. Known for his success with two year olds and sprinters, Richard is responsible for 2010 Champion 2YO Wootton Bassett, July Cup (Gr 1) winner Mayson and most recently this year’s Prix Maurice de Gheest (Gr 1) winner Garswood. Richard has also taken a liking to winning races at the big festival meetings and this year was no exception when Baccarat won The Wokingham Stakes impressively at the Royal Meeting. He bought his first racehorse, Ladas, whilst at Oxford University and against university rules. Oxford offered him a choice between selling his horse or abandoning his studies; he chose the racehorse and Ladas went on to win The Derby and The 2000 Guineas for the Earl in 1894. His declared ambitions were to ‘marry an heiress, own a horse that won The Derby and be Prime Minister’, so he fulfilled all three! We have had great success recently in sending horses to France where the prize money is significantly higher than in the UK. Owners in these syndicates have thoroughly enjoyed trips to Chantilly where we stay at the Aga Khan’s hotel The Jeu de Paume. Freddy Head hails from the renowned racing family and arguably trained one of the greatest fillies of our time in Goldikova. Freddy has also done a fine job with our own Whim who was a winner at two and Listed placed this season. In 2013 Roger Varian boasted one of the highest strike rates of any trainer with a 22% winner to runner ratio. Roger has also bought success to our owners having trained Dominant to win the valuable Tattersalls Millions 3YO Cup in 2011. He was also the first Prime Minister to live in Downing Street. He was described by opponents as ‘the screen-master General’ adept at pulling all the political strings. It is also interesting to note that during his time as Prime Minister an annual ‘Historical List’ of horse races run, recording the sport at a national level, was first published. William Haggas has been a key part of Highclere’s success over the years having trained many of our high profile winners, including Brunel to win The German 2000 Guineas and the Topkapi Trophy in Istanbul. More recently he handled Approve and Collection to win at Royal Ascot. William is married to Maureen, daughter of the great Lester Piggott and together they have built one of the most successful racing stables in the country. Charles Hills took over the reins at Farringdon Place from his legendary father Barry in 2011 and in 2013 trained three Group 1 winners, including Just The Judge to land The QIPCO 1000 Guineas. He currently trains our own Glenard who is rapidly becoming a top class middle distance performer and together with his wife Philippa provide the warmest of welcomes. He was the first and only Jewish Prime Minister, who remarked on his political and social ascent as ‘having climbed to the top of a greasy pole’. He struck up a remarkable rapport with his sovereign, Queen Victoria (by then in her widowhood) who found him ‘full of poetry, romance and chivalry’. He convinced Parliament to bestow the title ‘Empress of India’ to Queen Victoria which pleased her greatly. This syndicate brings together two of the young rising stars in the training ranks, Andrew Balding and Ralph Beckett. Andrew Balding is no stranger to Highclere having trained Bonfire to win The Dante in 2012. Andrew has been in charge at Kingsclere since he took over from his father in 2003 and quickly established himself by training the Oaks winner, Casual Look, in his first season. Andrew and his wife Anna Lisa are the most generous of hosts and look after our owners particularly well on stable visits. Ralph Beckett, who now trains at Kimpton Down near Andover, formally the yard of the late Toby Balding, is responsible for two Oaks winners in Look Here in 2008 and Talent in 2013, a race in which he also trained the second placed Secret Gesture. Ralph is always improving the facilities at Kimpton Down and recently added an equine treadmill. He was a most noted senior statesman and mentored a young Queen Victoria, who trusted him greatly. He held together a difficult and divided Cabinet and was efficient in keeping order and conducting foreign policy. The city of Melbourne in Australia was named after him. Year after year European bred horses have tremendous success down under at middle distances due to the fact that Australian breeding is so focussed on sprinting and with the race program and prize money on offer it is a no brainer for Highclere to race horses there. Opinion has already proved this point finishing second in The Sydney Cup (Gr 1) and The Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1), winning significant prize money in the process. The horses in this syndicate will race in the United Kingdom before continuing their careers in Australia. The trainers over here will be William Haggas and Ed Dunlop before Chris Waller takes over at his yard near Sydney in 2017. Ed Dunlop has had tremendous success all over the world with the likes of Ouija Board, Snow Fairy and Red Cadeaux, who has been second in The Melbourne Cup twice and goes there once again for a fourth attempt in the race that stops a nation. William Haggas’s star has been in the ascendancy for a number of years and with a 25% winners to runners strike rate so far in 2014, he looks a sure fire champion trainer of the future. I have been seriously impressed by both the training and communication of Chris Waller and his team, whose handling of Opinion has been exemplary. Chris has made a name for himself as one of the leading trainers for taking European imports and achieving success at the very highest level with horses such as Kingdom Of Fife and Stand To Gain. He was a truly global statesman with an abrasive style leading to the nickname Lord Pumicestone. He waged the Opium War with China establishing Hong Kong as a trading base for Britain in 1842 and also brought a successful conclusion to the Crimean War. Highly patriotic, whose ‘heart always beat for the honour of England’, he proved very popular with the public. Lord Palmerston died in office at the age of 80. This combination of trainers has been very popular over the years and both have trained for Highclere since its beginning in 1992. The Hannon family continue to warmly welcome all of our owners in their stunning reception room overlooking the outdoor ring at Herridge. Richard Hannon Jnr is now at the helm and has quickly settled in having already trained a classic winner in the form of 2000 Guineas hero Night Of Thunder. He also trains our own top class juvenile Beacon who won this year’s Flying Childers Stakes (Gr 2). Sir Michael Stoute has trained six winners for Highclere at Royal Ascot, most recently with Telescope this year who won The Hardwicke Stakes (Gr 2) in scintillating fashion. Sir Michael has been Champion Trainer on no less than ten occasions and remains a master at nurturing top class animals to fulfil their full potential. He was a dominant and controversial figure, known as ‘G. O. M.’ (Grand Old Man) to the British working class, his policies intending to improve individual liberty and increasing the number of men to vote in an election (women, of course, were still ineligible) and who believed strongly in free trade. He was famously disliked by Queen Victoria who called him a ‘half-mad firebrand’ and he had a lengthy and bitter rivalry with Benjamin Disraeli. This syndicate has provided my brother-in-law John Warren with a little more flexibility at the sales by increasing the average cost per horse, enabling him to look at horses which previously may have been out of his reach. William Haggas is a very popular trainer with many of our owners and is rapidly becoming one of the top trainers in Newmarket. William’s attention to detail, coupled with his facilities in the yard (which include an equine treadmill), mean that every horse is given the best opportunity to fulfil its potential. He has enjoyed another fantastic season, highlighted by Mukhadram’s victory in The Coral Eclipse. Roger Varian took over the reins at Kremlin Stables in 2012, having spent 10 years as assistant to the late Michael Jarvis and has very quickly proved that he is more than capable of continuing the success of his mentor. His 22% strike rate in 2013 was one of the highest of any trainer in the country. He commanded celebrated campaigns in the Napoleonic Wars with the final victory at Waterloo in 1815. One of his most notable achievements in office was overseeing an Act which granted almost full civil rights to Catholics in the UK. He was the only British Prime Minister to fight a duel whilst in Office and he gave his name to the Wellington Boot. Our most exclusive syndicate brings together arguably the top two trainers in the country in John Gosden and Sir Michael Stoute. Sir Michael has trained numerous winners for Highclere over the years including six at Royal Ascot and of course the mighty Harbinger who stormed to victory in The King George V and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes in 2010. He is currently responsible for Telescope, our top Group performer whose victory in this year’s Hardwicke Stakes was absolutely breathtaking. Sir Michael is joined by John Gosden who won the Trainers Championship for the first time in 2012. John has trained numerous winners all over the world, five hundred of which were in California, before returning to the UK in 1989, so his international experience will be invaluable at this level. Having experienced success at the very highest level in his first syndicate with the champion filly Petrushka, Simon went on to join a number of syndicates each year with the result that he has amassed over 165 winners since 1998. Simon wanted to create an exclusive Bermuda based syndicate and last year launched the Longtail syndicate in which two yearlings were purchased at an average of 250,000 guineas a piece. This year Simon has increased the average price to 300,000 a piece for two yearlings in the Pink Sands Syndicate, which gave John Warren the opportunity of purchasing animals with the very best pedigrees. The two trainers chosen for this syndicate are Sir Michael Stoute and John Gosden who also train BTR’s two year old colts that constitute the 2014 Longtail Account. The John Gosden trained Johnny Barnes made his first start a winning one and the form from that race is proving very strong indeed. The reputation and accomplishments of both trainers are unquestionably second to none. Simon has had the pleasure of having had interests in some special Highclere horses trained by Sir Michael over the years, including Petrushska, Harbinger, Distinction and this year’s star Telescope whose brilliant victory in The Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot was something to savour.
