At a glittering ceremony

of British Inventions Show
in London, which saw the
participation of over 170
people from various countries,
Shaikh Nasser said, he
nurtured the hope for a better
future in a world where “we
celebrate the power of a great
idea and the potential of a
creative mind.”
“It is my honour to
announce the birth of the
world’s first Embassy of
Invention in the Kingdom of
Bahrain, in partnership with
the British Inventors Society.
This milestone stems from His
Majesty King Hamad bin Isa
Al Khalifa’s goal to make the
Kingdom the cradle of global
innovation where exciting
ideas can be encouraged and
seen to fruition,” he said.
Shaikh Nasser pointed out
that the embassy would seek
to create an environment
of innovation by becoming
a hub where inventors and
innovators could come
together and develop their
ideas.
“Additionally, this institution
will concentrate on supporting
the youth and encouraging them
on their journey of discovery.

designing to prototyping,
commercial appraisal and
investment, to name a few,”

he Interior Ministry has
taken the dismissed MP
Osama Al Tamimi into custody
for seven days for questioning
over assault allegations.
Mr. Al Tamimi has been at
the centre of controversy since
he was elected to parliament in
by-elections held to replace 18 Al
Wefaq MPs who resigned in the
wake of 2011 unrest.

the rejection of his nomination.

Ministry confirmed that he will
be allowed to attend the court
hearings.

first MP to have been suspended
from the parliament when he
insulted and threatened Minister
of State for Foreign Affairs,
Ghanim Al Buainain. Mr Al
Tamimi also insulted MP Sawsan
Taqawi during the lunch break
on the same day. He also torched
an Israeli flag in parliament in
November 2012.
Dismissed in May

r. Al Tamimi was dismissed from the parliament on last
May 20, as 31 parliamentarians voted against him for his
repeated misconduct at the parliament sessions. Parliament
Chairman Khalifa Al Dhahrani had officially announced
his ouster, temporarily leaving Central Governorate’s fifth
district without a representative in the House.
Prior to his ouster, 25 MPs had recommended for
voting in the parliament in order to dismiss Mr. Al Tamimi.
Parliament’s Legislative and Legal Committee recorded over
five acts committed by him during the parliamentary session.
The latest incident occurred on April 29 when Mr. Al
Tamimi, enraged over alleged human rights violations in
Jaw prison, almost engaged in a physical conflict with MP
Hassan Al Dossary.

sex with us for money,” she

to get a mobile phone and

Convention marked a new
record attendance as more than
6000 people attended the two-day
event over the weekend.
It beat its own record of 4000
recorded last year as fans flew
from all over GCC to participate
in the event to be part of the
gaming and cosplay competitions.

Well, while the whole citizens
and residents of Bahrain are
eagerly awaiting the chilling
winter season, many school
children are weary about the
impending season as they are
expected to wake up before
dawn and get ready to go to
school putting up with the
teeth-grinding cold!
‘Early to bed and early to rise
‘does indeed make a good
adage but is often perceived
by some to be difficult to
practise.
The school timings in Bahrain
including the other parts of
GCC are normally between
7.30 to 2pm which seems to
be quite in favour of aforesaid
dictum.
Although schools in some
countries start only at 9am
in the morning, the practice
of early timings in Bahrain
is indeed a good one. It
habituates the children to
wake up early in the morning

everyday and thereby giving
them enough time for
themselves and to foster their
innate talents.
However, as many would
concur, it is extremely difficult
for everyone including the
elders to wake up early in
the morning during the
winter season. If elders find
it difficult to wake up early in
the morning, it is anybody’s
surmise how difficult it would
be for the tiny tots to do so!
The children who stay in the
city ought to wake up as
early as 5am. Overlooking
the chilling cold, they have to
get ready for the school and
board their school transport
by around 6am.
If children have to wake up
this early, it goes without
saying how early the parents
need to wake up to prepare
their children to school.
Further, parents have to
inevitably go to bed early as
they have to wake up early
the next morning!
It is an established fact that
good sleep is an essential precondition to effective learning
and good memory. The
smaller children need much
more sleep than the grown
up ones. (The author who has
studied psychology firmly
believes in this fact)
What is the solution then?
How about having different
school timing for the school
children exclusively during
the winter season?
Will the Ministry concerned
look into the pros and cons
of this? Do the private school
managements have the
liberty and authority to make
the necessary changes and
if they do, are they ready to
be flexible on this matter
keeping the best interests of
the school students?
The present day children are
the real assets as they form
the future human resource of
the country!

Learning to love yourself
Dear sir,
There are some people in
the world, who do not love
themselves.
When I say to ‘love yourself,’ it
does not mean that you would
indulge on ‘ego-tripping’ or
narcissistic attitude.
There is an old adage which
says, ‘You cannot give what
you do not have’ and this
definitely includes ‘love’. If
you do not know how to love
yourself, then, you cannot
give love to others. Therefore,
learning to love yourself is the
key to true happiness.
Loving oneself means being
able to accept yourself for
what you are. This means
that you are totally at peace
with yourself and can face

I was saddened by the death
of 10th grader Stella Thomas,
who committed suicide at
home while her parents were
still out.
It is always heartbreaking to
read about young people
who turn to suicide as a
means of escaping their
problems, when they could
always turn to members
of their own families for
guidance and support.
According to your report
yesterday, Stella left a suicide
note and it seemed that the
girl was a victim of bullying
in school.
The report indicated that
‘the note pointed fingers at
one of the students in Stella’s
school, who had allegedly
been harassing her for the
past two years.’
It did not say whether
it was a boy or a girl who
was harassing Stella but
definitely, whoever it was, he
or she had a big role in the
girl’s suicide.
It is just a waste to lose such
a beautiful and talented girl
to suicide.
Stella had her whole life
ahead of her and a bright
future because she was a
good student in school.
I feel sorry for her parents
for losing their ‘millennium
flower.’ My heart goes to
them and to all those who
loved her.

ran yesterday hanged a woman
convicted of murdering a former
intelligence officer she claimed
had tried to sexually assault her,
defying international appeals for a
stay of execution.
Reyhaneh Jabbari, 26, who had
been on death row for five years,
was put to death at dawn, the
official IRNA news agency quoted
the Tehran prosecutor’s office as
saying.
The

condemnation from the United
States and human rights monitor
Amnesty International, which
dubbed it “a bloody stain on Iran’s
human rights record” and “an
affront to justice”.
A message posted on the
homepage of a Facebook campaign
set up to try to save Jabbari noted
the “sad news” of her death,
adding the words “Rest in Peace”
alongside pictures of her as a
young child.
Ms. Jabbari, an interior
designer, was executed for the fatal
2007 stabbing of Morteza Abdolali
Sarbandi.
The United Nations and human
rights groups had said a confession
to her crime was obtained under
intense pressure and threats from
Iranian prosecutors, and that she
should have had a retrial.
Iranian actors and other
prominent figures had campaigned
for clemency on Ms. Jabbari’s behalf,
echoing similar calls in the West.
The judiciary had given
several deadlines for Sarbandi’s
family to spare Ms. Jabbari
under an Islamic sharia law
provision that allows a death
sentence for murder to be
commuted to jail time.

ut relatives of Sarbandi, a 47-year-old surgeon
who earlier worked for the intelligence ministry,
refused the pleas, demanding, according to Iranian
media, that she tell “the truth.”
A UN human rights monitor said the killing came
in self-defence after Sarbandi tried to sexually abuse
Jabbari, and that the condemned woman’s trial in
2009 had been deeply flawed.
But a medical report, prepared for the judiciary
and quoted by IRNA in its dispatch, said Sarbandi
was stabbed in the back and that the killing had been
premeditated.
Efforts for a commuted jail sentence had intensified
in recent weeks but Sarbandi’s family and Ms. Jabbari
remained at loggerheads over the circumstances of
the killing.
According to Jalal Sarbandi, the victim’s eldest
son, Ms. Jabbari testified that a man was present in
the apartment where his father was killed but she had
refused to reveal his identity. Ms. Jabbari’s mother
was allowed to visit her for one hour on Friday.
US, Britain condemn

ollowing Ms. Jabbari’s death, the US State
Department issued a statement that cited
“serious concerns with the fairness” of her trial,
including “reports of confessions made under severe
duress.” “We join our voice with those who call on
Iran to respect the fair trial guarantees afforded to its
people under Iran’s own laws and its international
obligations,” spokeswoman Jen Psaki added.
Britain voiced similar concerns and called on the
Islamic republic to halt its use of the death penalty.
“Actions like these do not help Iran build
confidence or trust with the international
community. I urge Iran to put a moratorium
on all executions,” said Foreign Office Minister
Tobias Ellwood.
According to the United Nations, more than
250 people have been executed in Iran since the
beginning of 2014.
Amnesty’s deputy director for the Middle
East and North Africa, Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui,
said Ms. Jabbari’s death was “disappointing in
the extreme”.

I
ts strikes me that in both Bahrain and
Britain politics are becoming a bit
banal.
To be fair some people in Bahrain
are getting a bit more excited about the
forthcoming elections than is the case in
the UK.
No one seems to be running around
burning cars in Britain or committing
meaningless acts of sabotage and violence.
But while I have to condemn those
who are carrying out these acts I do get
a feeling that there is something positive
about the fact that people are that excited
about the outcome of the forthcoming
plebiscite.
In Britain, the prospects of voting next
year is a bit of a yawn when it comes to
wondering what any party actually stands
for.
We are all well aware that the only really
radical party is the UK Independence
Party who have rather set the heather on
fire by having a clear policy that involves
us leaving the European Union.
They will doubtless win a bye-election
next month but come the General Election
they will probably lose that seat and are
unlikely to have more than a handful of
members of parliament, if that, when the
votes are counted and the results are in.
What they have achieved, however, is
to throw a bit of a googly at the major
parties in where they stand in terms of
issues of immigration and membership of
the European club.
Both Labour and the Conservatives
seem to have risen to this challenge by
moving to the right.
But the bottom line is that there is
practically no immigration worth talking
about in the UK while leaving the
European Union is almost certainly not
popular with anyone other than empire
loyalists in the Tory Party.
Out of a total population of more than
60 million people we have about two
million immigrants.
That is not much compared to Bahrain
where the split between expats and locals
is about 50-50.
By and large no one in Bahrain is
all that bothered about the large expat
community, which is why the hospitality
of Bahrainis makes the Kingdom one
among the favourite spots for expatriates.
Bahrain has been chosen as the fifth
best destination by expatriates in the
world. According to the seventh Expat
Explorer Survey, most of the people prefer
Bahrain to improve their job prospects
and maintain work-life balance.
Switzerland tops the list as an all-round
expat destination. Singapore stands in
the second place followed by China and
Germany.
Now it has to be said that puts the
small island of Bahrain in some pretty
impressive company.
By comparison there are not really all
that many people looking for a future by
moving to the UK other than people who
are desperately poor and have few skills.
Which brings me back to politics and
the forthcoming elections?
What are the main issues before the
electorate in Bahrain?
Quite frankly I haven’t got a clue and
that is not because I am back in Britain,
because I used to wonder how people
made political choices when I still lived
in Adliya.
If the track record of elected members
in Bahrain is anything to go by then I
presume they should be competing at
the polls on who wants to close the most
things.
Closing things in my limited experience
is the only thing MPs want to do.
Whether it be cinemas, Shisha
cafes, public bars or Gulf Air, the only
policies I remember reading about from
the democratically elected house were
negative.
I may have missed out on this but I do
not remember any calls for better public
transport, improved cleansing services
or closer trade links with the rest of the
world ever appearing on parliament’s
agenda.
Policies like these tend to come from
ministers and the Shura Council, who
thankfully also tend to pour cold water
of the parliament’s more fiery negative
proposals.
There is an argument that I have made
in columns I have written in Bahrain for
years, which I shall repeat here.
If you want meaningful elections
providing the kind of services and
investment that Bahrain deserves and
needs then someone has to pay for it.
To have a say in that, the electorate
have to pay in the form of taxation.
That is something Britain and much of
the west appear to have forgotten.
We want the services, but throughout
the Thatcher and Blair years we seem to
have forgotten we have to pay for them.
All the main parties here are in favour
of the National Health Service but no one
wants to pay for it.
We all have to learn that if we want
politicians to provide us with everything
from defence to development and
economic growth we have to pay for it or
do without.
There is a thing in economics called the
Laffer Curve.
It dictates that if a government wants
to provide services then it must maximise
tax take.
Tax take increases as you increase rates
until it reaches a point where further rate
rises in fact reduce the amount of revenue
government gets.
In the UK, we are far short of that
point and we have to accept that if we
want good services we have to move up
the curve.
If Bahrain wants to prosper as a
democracy it is time that it got on the
curve, at whatever level.
Burning candidates’ cars or burying
your head in the sand, as we have been
doing in the UK, is not the answer.
Put that in your Shisha and smoke it –
while you still can.

Lebanon, a clash broke out

negotiators were that “there
does seem to be a real head of
steam”. “I think a lot of progress has been made,” he said.

of this year.” Robb admitted
trade ministers had a “very
big programme” during the
three-day talks, which attracted a small group protesting
against the “secret deal”. “I do

he Italian Supreme Court overturned fraud convictions and
18-month jail terms against celebrated
fashion duo Domenico Dolce and
Stefano Gabbana, their company announced. “We have always been honest and we are extremely proud of this
recognition by the Italian Court of
Justice. Viva l’Italia,” the two fashion
house chiefs said in a statement. “The
Italian Supreme Court of Justice found
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana
not guilty of tax evasion,” a company
press release said.
In April an Italian appeals court had
upheld a guilty verdict against Dolce
and Gabbana for evading taxes totalling 200 million euros ($277 million).
Dolce and Gabbana, whose celebrity
clients include Beyonce and Madonna,

were accused of having transferred
control of their brands to a shell company in Luxembourg in 2004 and 2005
to avoid paying Italian taxes. Prosecutors had argued that setting up
the Luxembourg company Gado -- an
acronym of the surnames of the two
designers -- while the operation was
being run out of Italy was a bid to defraud the state.
They were found guilty in June 2013,
and given 20-month jail sentences,
which they appealed. Dolce and Gabbana were originally accused of tax
evasion of around one billion euros,
but the court ruled that just 200 million euros of that sum was relevant. On
Friday the Supreme Court annulled the
conviction, declaring that the prosecution case was “unfounded” and ending

Aspentech’s collaboration
with universities?
DT News: What kind of
challenges and opportunities do
you see in Bahrain and in GCC
countries?
The challenges are twofold
a. New world-class oil and
gas plants are coming up in
the Middle East, and all these
plants need to operate most
optimally in a very competitive
environment.
b. People challenge- a lot
of new hires are joining these
industries and they all need to be
trained and made industry ready
in the shortest possible time.
These are the challenges
that we see for the industry in
general and that is where our
opportunities are present.
We have to help our customers
bring their young workers
up to speed. For example, in
universities, our software is part
of the engineering curriculum.
Many companies use our
software to train their new
engineers.
DT News: Gap between the
theory and practice, what is the
time required to cover that gap?
For someone new to the
industry, it may take a year or
two years to become a stronglyfunctioning chemical engineer.
But what companies really want
is the young engineers to step
into the role and learn quickly.
DT News: Is that where

I don’t think so. Optimisation
maximises
through

are often set by companies with
long experience, and hence the
chances are negligible. I have
been with Aspentech since ’95
and we never had a situation
in which our clients faced a
problem like that.
DT News: How much can
Aspentech software manage
sudden changes of plans or
setbacks?
If for example if there is a
change regarding the amount of
gasoline produced in a refinery
in a month, our system takes
only 15 minutes to rerun the
plan and come up with a feasible
plan. And, for chemicals it is
much more impressive.
DT News: How will fall in oil
price affect your business?
Historically we had both
effects; it had boosted as well
as impaired our business at
different times.
A major disruptive event
happening in the world is Shale
Gas and it has driven down
Natural Gas prices below $4. Six
or seven new ethylene facility
is coming upon Gulf coast
today and more are in line to
be constructed. This is going
to have significant impact on
ethylene supply. Now, Shale
gas has put US almost on
equal footing with Middle East
regarding cost of production.
Hence, now, operational
excellence and optimisation have
become very important. So when
prices crash some companies
may pull back, but others would
go for process improvement and
increase their spending. So it is
a mix of positive and negative.
Hence, the slide in oil prices has
a neutral effect on our revenue.
DT News: Fall in Natural Gas
prices has been happening for
the last few years. Hence, you
must be very comfortable now
in facing such a scenario in oil?
Yes. We are very comfortable
with this scenario. There is a
huge amount of construction in
ethylene sector. This sector is

SpaceX ship leaves ISS for Earth

spacecraft left the International Space Station to return to
Earth yesterday after a month
in orbit, NASA said. Astronauts
at the orbiting lab manipulated the space station’s robotic
arm to detach the Dragon on
time, at 9:57 am (1357 GMT),
in what the US space agency
called a “very clean release.”
The capsule was set to splash

down five and a half hours later
in the Pacific Ocean, near the
Mexican coast, slowed by three
enormous parachutes. The unmanned craft, which has been
docked in orbit since September 23, will be carrying back
some 3,800 pounds (1,700 kilograms) of materials, including results from experiments
conducted on the space station.
The SpaceX vessel is the only
spacecraft currently capable of
returning with cargo. Its last
mission to ISS was in April. It
had delivered more than 5,000
pounds (2,200 kilograms) of
cargo, including freeze-dried
meals, 20 live lab mice and a 3D
printer, in its fourth contracted
mission to the orbiting lab. The
lab mice are the first live mammals to hitch a ride aboard a
commercial cargo ship, and
they are enclosed in a NASAmade research cage for studying the effects of weightlessness
on their bodies.
The 3-D printer is the first
of its kind to demonstrate how
the technology can be used in
space, even without gravity to
assist the process. The Dragon
return Saturday kicks off a week
of heavy traffic to and from the
orbiting science lab.

IMF fights negative interest rates

SDR currency as it fights off
the impact of sagging interest
rates and deflation from major
economies. The IMF said that
from Monday it would maintain a floor rate of 0.05 percent, or five basis points, on its
special drawing rights or SDR
currency, which represents a
basket of the currencies of its
largest members. Currently
the rate the Fund pays on the
money its members lend to it

the basis for the global crisis
lender’s loan rate to borrowers.
With short-term rates for
key SDR components the euro
and the yen now running below zero, and the dollar and
pound rates barely above zero,
that risked pulling the SDR
rate down to a negative level
as well, a senior fund official
explained. “Under the current
rule there is nothing to stop
the SDR rate from going negative,” he said. “Financially, it
would be a somewhat perverse
situation because our creditor
members would be paying for
providing us resources.” But it
also acknowledges a worry the
IMF, top central bankers, and
bond market traders have been
expressing of major economies
sinking toward deflation. “This
is a reflection of the fact that
central banks have set very low
interest rates, or even negative,” the official said. To meet
the challenge of historically
low rates as well, the official
said, the IMF will round its
rates to three decimal points
instead of two as in the past.

Renault chief sees auto market slowing

slower growth in Europe’s auto
market next year as it continues to recover from the global
economic crisis. Ghosn, who
is also Renault’s chief executive officer, said the European
market was growing at six
percent so far this year -- the
best since the 2007 crisis. “I’m
expecting in 2015 this recovery to continue,” Ghosn told
journalists on the sidelines of
an industry forum in China’s
commercial hub Shanghai.
“I don’t see another six percent increase. I think the increase will probably be more
moderate than six percent...
in line with GDP (gross domestic product) growth,” he
said, but gave no estimates for
Renault alone. Ghosn is also
president and chief executive
officer of Japan’s Nissan Motor Co. through an alliance
between the companies. Many
foreign carmakers turned
to China, the world’s largest
auto market, in the wake of
the global crisis as their home
markets in the United States
or Europe collapsed.
China’s auto market is now
slowing as well, as weaker
domestic economic growth
and a corruption crackdown
take their toll. But Ghosn
said Renault and Nissan
were committed to adding production in China.
In late 2013, Renault signed
an agreement with Chinese
company Dongfeng to set up
a joint venture that will start
production in 2016 with initial capacity of 150,000 vehicles a year. Nissan has an

month announced they plan

“We’re adding capacity (in
China),” Ghosn told business

auto sales rose just 2.5 percent year-on-year in September, the slowest growth for

demo on November 8. Renzi’s
measures “are not sufficient
to change the path Italy is
on,” she added. Thousands of
young people from all over the
country waved the red flags of
the CGIL, singing the national
anthem and letting off flares
in front of the Colosseum to
say ‘no’ to the so-called “Jobs
Act”. “He said he wanted to see
us and count us. Here we are
Renzi, count us!”, a protester in

Youth unemployment in the
eurozone’s third largest economy stands at a record 44.2 percent and those who do manage
to find work are often employed on temporary contracts
which offer little in the way of
security or benefits. “We want
investments in the future,” one
young person shouted, while
another held up a banner with
a sarcastic “thanks for the ‘solution’ to our problems Renzi”,
and a picture of someone vomiting. “We have no intention of
giving up. Renzi must know
that to change the country,
he needs us, those here in the
streets of Rome today,” said
Maurizio Landini, head of the
FIOM union, which joined the
CGIL protest.
Renzi’s centre-left Democratic Party (PD) is split over
the proposed measures, with
the deepest division caused
by a debate over the future of
Article 18, a law which currently protects those who are
unfairly dismissed.In his bid
to reboot Italy’s economy and
lure in foreign investors, Renzi wants to make it easier for
companies to fire people and
introduce a system by which
job protection and benefits are
earned by workers over time.
But unions and many on the
left are furious over the mooted changes and he has been
accused of being a Thatcherite.

Kazakh oligarch Mukhtar Ablyazov to Russia and Ukraine, despite concerns over his safety if
the move goes ahead. Ablyazov,
a former minister turned opposition figure and banker turned
fugitive, is wanted by Russia,
Ukraine and Kazakhstan on
embezzlement charges which
he says were trumped up by his
arch-foe Nursultan Nazarbayev,
the president of his oil-rich
nation.
After months on the run he
was arrested on the French Riviera in July last year and France
has since been grappling with
the vast and tangled case of what
to do with the 51-year-old. The
court in the southeast city of
Lyon said priority would be given to Russia for the extradition.
The scale of the embezzlement
alleged by Moscow of $5 billion
(four billion euros) is far greater
than that alleged by Ukraine of
$400 million.

was once a member of the inner
circle of the Kazakhstan elite
and served as energy and trade
minister before his fall from
grace. He was jailed in 2002 for
abuse of power and illegal business activities after co-founding
and leading an opposition party,
in a move widely seen as a bid to
silence him.
He was quickly pardoned and
released, however, and became
chief executive of the BTA bank,
which was nationalised in 2009
after facing collapse when the
global financial crisis struck.
Soon after, Ablyazov fled to
Britain over accusations he had
stolen billions of dollars in state
and investors’ funds from the

European Central Bank, reports
claimed yesterday, citing leaked
documents. Nearly one in five
of the 130 banks surveyed failed
the stress test, the Wall Street
Journal and the Daily Telegraph
said, ahead of the publication of
the official results by the ECB today. The unprecedented health
check of eurozone banks comes
before the ECB assumes the role
of the region’s banking supervisor next month.
The Frankfurt-based institution takes on its new watchdog role on November 4 and

Colombian rebel jailed for 27 years

Sports City in Riffa for their fifth
Asian championship trophy and

led Iran to a deserving victory,
setting up crucial efforts for Sahand Allah Verdian, Akbar Valaei
and skipper Mohammadjavad
Manavinezhad who scored most
of the team points.
Iran were also well represented by Hadi Seyediazi,Rasoul
Aghchelli, Mohammad Javad
Heidari and liberos Hadi Seyedniazi and Mohammad Daliri.
Both China and Iran headed
into the final high in confidence
after clinching hard-fought 3-1
semi-final victories over South
Korea and Bahrain, respectively.

However, the Koreans were

the visitor, and praised the strong
ties linking Bahrain and Lebanon
at all fields, especially in sports.
Mr. Askar also lauded the excellent reputation of the Lebanese Olympic Committee and
the Lebanese Volleyball Association, expressing Bahrain’s
readiness for further bilateral cooperation between the

Hend pulls ahead in Macau

third round of the Macau

shots clear of Anirban Lahiri to put a second straight
title within his sights. The
Australian produced three
birdies over his closing six
holes at the Macau Golf and
Country Club, while India’s
Lahiri carded a solid bogeyfree 67 for second place at
the $900,000 Asian Tour
event. But long-hitting Hend
-- who is chasing a seventh
Asian Tour victory after winning the Hong Kong Open
last week -- was not satisfied
with his performance, pro-

nouncing it “flat”. “Hopefully
I can come back tomorrow
and feel a little more energy
and concentrate better,” said
the 41-year-old, who leads on
14-under-par 199. “I’m just
feeling flat, extremely flat.”
Hend started off in brilliant
form, nailing four successive birdies from the second
hole. But he lost concentration with three bogeys over a
five-hole stretch mid-round,
before streaking ahead again
with birdies on 13, 15 and 18.
Thailand’s Prom Meesawat
took the day’s best round of
64 for third on the leaderboard. South Africa’s Ernie
Els, the tournament’s star attraction, was lagging behind
on 211, two-under-par.

will start in top position for
today’s Malaysian MotoGP,
surpassing the record for the
most poles in a single season.
The Spanish Repsol Honda
rider clocked a record lap
time of one minute 59.791
seconds in yesterday qualifying at Sepang, 0.182 seconds
ahead of his team-mate and
compatriot Dani Pedrosa.
In third place was Spain’s
Jorge Lorenzo, while his Yamaha teammate Valentino Rossi,
who is battling him for the season’s runner-up title, qualified

in sixth. It was Marquez’s 13th
pole of the year, breaking the
previous record of 12 front-row
starts in a season jointly held
by Australians Mick Doohan
and Casey Stoner. His flying lap
toward the end of the session
also broke his own record from
qualifying last year of 2 minutes 0.011 seconds. He came
second in last year’s race.
Marquez said he was “definitely delighted” with his position after taking a tumble in the
fourth practice session. “Yes,
I’m definitely motivated. To
achieve 13 poles is not easy, and
I’m happy with the record. But
the main race is yet to come,
and I want to be focused for
that,” the 21-year-old said. “Tomorrow won’t be easy because
Dani was also very fast today,
but I’m definitely looking to
race in dry conditions. If it
rains, then it’s a different story.”
The 5.5-kilometre (3.4 mile)
Sepang circuit is famed for its
hot track temperatures and
tropical afternoon downpours.
But Saturday’s qualifying
remained dry. Pedrosa, who
topped all three practice sessions and has won the last two
Malaysian Grand Prix, was
the only other rider to finish
below the two-minute mark,
clocking 1 minute 59.973. The
29-year-old, who has yet to win
a MotoGP championship title,
said he was content with his
second-place finish. Lorenzo
clocked 2 minutes 0.203, while
Germany’s Stefan Bradl and
Italy’s Andrea Dovizioso qualified fourth and fifth respectively. (AFP)

games to a campaign under
French boss Wenger had they
failed to win on Wearside for

lifted his team into second
place in the Premier League
yesterday. Ronald Koeman’s
side had romped to an 8-0
demolition of Sunderland
in their previous fixture
and while the performance
against gritty Stoke at St
Mary’s wasn’t so eye-catching, the reward was the same.
Mane’s first-half strike
proved the difference and,
remarkably after such a turbulent close-season marked
by the departure of manager
Mauricio Pochettino and
five key players, Southampton have made a better start
than the 1983-84 season
when they finished second
in the English top-flight.
As well as Mane’s cool fin-

ish, the key to Southampton’s success was their rock
solid defence, which has
conceded only five league
goals this season and held
out for another clean sheet
against a Stoke side they
will face again in the League
Cup on Wednesday. Mane
was the only change to the
side that routed Sunderland and he made a lively

Jun shares lead in Korea Open

ndy Murray took a huge
step towards sealing his
place in the ATP World Tour
finals as he beat top seed David Ferrer 6-4, 7-5 to reach
the Valencia Open final yesterday. Murray has put himself in prime position for a
seventh consecutive appearance at the season-ending
tournament in London with
a run of 17 wins in his last
19 matches, including victory over Ferrer in the final of
the Austrian Open last week.
The Scot and Ferrer are
currently eighth and ninth in
the race to London with four
places still up for grabs following Rafael Nadal’s decision to withdraw to have his
appendix removed on Friday.

They both finished with a

legs of 2min 39.85sec after
Shiffrin had led after the first
leg by the slender margin of
0.09sec. It is not the first time
that the resort has seen a tie
for first place, in 2002 three
skiers shared top spot in the
shape of Slovenia’s Tina Maze,
Norwegian Andrine Flemmen and Nicole Hosp of Austria. For 19-year-old Shiffrin,
who has carried all before her
in the slalom discipline, this
was a first success in the giant

champions missed out on the

given the home side a firsthalf lead at Upton Park. City
were desperate to close the
five-point gap on Chelsea, 24

at Old Trafford. But while David Silva halved the deficit in

conjure an equaliser against a
