Ferrari Cambridge Graphene Centre, University of Cambridge, CB3 OFA, UK Prof. Dr. Peter Seitz Head, Hamamatsu Photonics Innovation Center Europe; Adjunct Professor of Optoelectronics, EPFL Lausanne; Deputy Managing Director, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab, ETH Zurich, Switzerland Graphene has great potential in photonics and optoelectronics, where the combination of its unique optical and electronic properties can be fully exploited, the absence of a bandgap can be beneficial, and the linear dispersion of the Dirac electrons enables ultra-wide-band tunability [1-3]. Despite being a single atom thick, graphene can be optically visualized [4]. The linear dispersion of the Dirac electrons enables broadband applications. Saturable absorption is observed as a consequence of Pauli blocking [5,6] and can be exploited for modelocking and Q switching of a variety of ultrafast and broadband lasers [1,5-7]. Chemical and physical treatments enable luminescence [1,7]. Graphene and other two-dimensional materials are also ideal as photodetection platforms [1-3]. The versatility of these material systems enables their application in areas including ultrafast and ultrasensitive detection of light in the ultraviolet, visible, infrared and terahertz frequency ranges [1-3,9-12]. These detectors can be integrated with other photonic components based on the same material, as well as with silicon photonic and electronic technologies. By combining graphene with plasmonic nanostructures, the efficiency of graphenebased photodetectors can be increased, because of efficient field concentration in the area of a p-n junction [9]. Light-graphene interaction can be tailored by using microcavities [10]. This year, more than two billion solid-state image sensors will be produced, with an ever-increasing number of pixels on each chip. Besides pixel density, there is much room for improved photosensor capabilities such as image acquisition speed, spectral sensitivity (from X -ray to infrared radiation), single-photon resolution, dynamic range, etc. “Smarter” pixels and image sensors are of huge interest to photosensing tasks in areas such as medical diagnostics, environmental sensing and monitoring, high-precision metrology, safety and security, consumer electronics, waste treatment and recycling, food safety, building control, cleaner combustion in vehicles and homes, wellness, anti-counterfeiting, nondestructive testing and in-line quality control, etc. The presentation will review the current situation, technological trends and research challenges, and it will describe in which way disruptive innovations in photosensing will come about.
