Students spend a month living in residence at one of our host university campuses across Canada. The program is offered to students currently completing grade 10, 11 or 12. With a focus that includes the sciences, technology and entrepreneurship, the program provides an academically stimulating, mind expanding adventure for top well-rounded students. Students will also enjoy recreational activities and the opportunity to explore local attractions. Students can also receive financial assistance through interest free loans. Information concerning these forms of assistance and awards can be obtained from the counsellors. The main forms of financial aid are the following: Passport to Education If students achieve final letter grades which place them in the top 30% of their grade based on their top 5 full-year marks, they will receive credits to be redeemed within five years from graduation by enrolling in any Ministry of Education approved post-secondary institution or job training program Value of the credits in 2011-12 is anticipated to be: GRADE 10 $250.00 GRADE 11 $250.00 GRADE 12 $500.00 Grade 12 students can pick up passports from the main office in September following their grad year. This will be the last year for this program as it is being phased out by the government. Ministry of Education Scholarships There are two major scholarship programs sponsored by the Ministry of Education: Graduation Program Exam Scholarships and District Scholarships. A student may receive both. 1. Graduation Program Examinations Scholarships www.bced.gov.bc.ca/awards Graduation Program Exam Scholarships are based on performance on Provincial examinations written grades 10-12. These awards are of $1,000 each and given to each student whom meets the following criteria (The top twenty students in the province receive awards of $2,500 each.). To be eligible for a Grad Program Exam Scholarship a student must: Meet the basic eligibility requirements Fulfills the BC graduation requirements of either the 2004 grad program or Adult Grad Achieves at least a B (73% or above)final mark, school and exam combined, in English 12 or Communications 12 Writes all 5 provincial exams needed to meet graduation requirements graduate from a B.C. Secondary School be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed immigrant) Scores rank among the top 5000 students in the province. Top 20 students will receive $2500 Courses for which there are provincial exams: ENGLISH 12 COMMUNICATIONS 12 SOCIAL STUDIES 11 FIRST NATIONS STUDIES 12 FOUNDATIONS OF MATH 10 APPRENTICESHIP AND WORKPLACE MATH 10 SCIENCE 10 ENGLISH 10 2. District Authority Awards www.bced.gov.bc.ca/awards Dogwood District Authority Awards are given to graduating students who have excelled in fields other than academics. Requirements are determined by the local District Scholarship Committee. Winners of these scholarships receive a $500 cheque and an additional $500 if they enroll in a recognized post-secondary institution. To qualify, a student must: be nominated by their teacher present a portfolio or project to be videotaped to the local scholarship committee of courses that are career oriented (Art, Music, Mechanics, Construction, Home Economics, Performing Arts, Second Languages, PE, etc.) have achieved an average letter grade over the grade twelve year of at least a C+ have completed graduation requirements English 12 or Communications 12 Must complete an interview and skill demonstration 3. Provincial Funding I. Canada Student Loan Programs (C.S.L.P.) www.canlearn.ca This program, offered by the Federal Government and administered by the Provincial Government, offers a repayable loan requiring no payment on principal or interest until six months after the student ceases full time studies.
