DOM FLEMONS with Grace and Tony

Dom Flemons is the "American Songster," pulling from traditions of old-time folk music to create new
sounds. Having performed music professionally since 2005, he has played live for over one million people
just within the past 3 years. As part of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, which he co-founded with Rhiannon
Giddens and Justin Robinson, he has played at a variety of festivals spanning from the Newport Folk Festival
to Bonnaroo, in addition to renowned venues such as the Grand Ole Opry.
She played bluegrass. He played punk… When Grace and Tony White met, they fell in love and the music
just followed after.
FIANCÉ with The Soil and the Sun
Saturday October 25, 2014 – 8 PM. $10; members $8.
From Stereogum where the band's new video was just premiered: "“Era,” the new single from Fiancé, moves along with a thumping
4/4 beat, looping vocal hook, and the kind of glistening synth melody that might make you assume this is the work of a bedroom
producer. But it is, in fact, a band: Fiancé are a four-piece from Delaware who will soon release their debut, EP1, and “Era” is our
first taste of their hypnotic sound."
The Soil & the Sun is corn-fed, Michigan-made, Experiential Spiritual Orchestral Rock. Originating in 2008 as a two-piece band, the
group has grown and matured into a seven-piece community of friends and musicians. Oboe, violin, guitars, accordion, percussion,
piano, keys and vocals, cooperate to create complex harmonies, layered melodies, and driving rhythms. The careful orchestration and
intentional instrumentation will speak to your soul.
XPN Welcomes THE PINE HILL PROJECT
Saturday November 8 - 8 PM. $25 advance or member, $30 day-of-show non-member.
The Pine Hill Project is Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell, with producer Larry Campbell. They’ve just
finished recording "Tomorrow You're Going," an album of cover songs. A Kickstarter campaign raised
$85,000 to make this a reality, and now the live show comes to Arden!
Lucy and Richard have been singing together for 25 years, and talking about making a record together for
just as long. Enough already! The new record is due out in November - details here:

DakhaBrakha
Friday, November 14, 2014 - 8 PM. $22; members $18.
"Jonathan Poneman, a co-founder of Sub Pop Records about DakhaBrakha's show at OFF Festival.
"DakhaBrakha were so thrilling, so spellbinding, and so utterly moving, it was an event unto itself,"
Poneman said later. "There was OFF, and then there was DakhaBrakha. They were enchanting and unlike
anything that I've ever seen before." He called it "the performance of the festival" and bemoaned that
DakhaBrakha was "not on the Sub Pop roster... yet."

Monthly Line Dancing
The Arden Folk Gild will be hosting monthly country line dancing on the second Wednesday
of every month at the Arden Gild Hall. There will be instruction for beginners throughout the
evening as well as dancing for more experienced dancers. Please join us on Wednesday, October 8,

Because the Gardeners Gild is visiting Kykuit: The Rockefeller Mansion and Gardens in the Hudson Valley of New York this

Pipers Group
Every Thursday evening from 6 to 9 the bagpipers hold practice in the back stage gallery with lessons
for novice as well experienced Pipers. The drummers use the Upper Hall (when the space is
available). They encourage anyone who has any interest in learning how to play the Highland Pipes or
the Parade drums to come to the Gild Hall any Thursday evening. If you would like more information

Fall 2014 – Snow White and the Seven Dwarves
Rehearsals are now underway for our fall show, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,” a
panto by Stuart Ardern. This British comedy is definitely NOT a silent pantomime! It’s
(very) loosely based on the story of Snow White and has humor and on-stage silliness to
appeal to people of all ages, along with some great singing! Characters include the King,
the evil Queen, the Magic Mirror, Snow White, Dame Victoria (Snow’s nurse), Nifty &
Shifty (disreputable salesmen), the Huntsman, three princes, a pantomime horse, the
dwarves, and a chorus of courtiers, woodland animals, etc.
Performances will be November 15, 21, & 22, 2014 at 8 PM and November 16 & 22 at 2 PM. Ticket prices are $17 adult, $14 senior,
$5 child/student in advance, and $20 adult, $17 senior, $7 child/student at the door. Stage direction is by Henry Porreca and music
direction by Diane Gray.
The Ardensingers will be hosting the Dinner Gild dinner on Saturday, October 18. Come out to enjoy a delicious meal and a sneak
peak of the show!
Spring 2015 – The Sorcerer
Lead roles for our Spring 2015 show, Gilbert and Sullivan’s, “The Sorcerer,” have been cast. However, we would welcome former,
current and future chorus members. The show will run from April 24 through May 2, 2015, with rehearsals beginning in January on
Sunday afternoons from 2 - 4:30 and Tuesday evenings from 7:30-10.

Zero-tolerance discipline in our schools: the impact on access to quality education
One of the top three strategic priorities for the ACLU of Delaware is to ensure equal access to quality
education for all Delaware children. Zero-tolerance discipline policies in schools are a major obstacle to
equal access because they have a disparate impact on special-needs students and students of color, especially
African American boys. Kathleen MacRae, executive director of the ACLU of Delaware, will lead this
month’s discussion, which touches on both national and local efforts to deduce the impact of zer- tolerance
discipline.

The 107th Arden Fair
The Arden Fair, held annually on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, is always a successful event owing
to the extraordinary efforts of so many volunteers coming together to support the Arden Club. The Arden
Fair raises funds to operate the Gild Hall, the Arden Club's home and center for the various Gild's
activities; in turn the local and regional communities are enriched through art, music, plays, recreation,
community, and more. If you are not already a member of the Arden Club, please consider joining - the

Gild Hall Renovations
To date, 128 donors have contributed $26,484 to the campaign. We have completed converting the Lower Gild Hall Ladies room
into an ADA-compliant, wheelchair-ready, unisex bathroom. Gabe MacKinney led the project as his Eagle Scout project. In
addition, the ceiling of Lower Hall has been renovated with new insulation to dampen the sound in the room along with new ceiling
tiles and dimmable LED lighting. Lower Hall walls have been painted. We will soon be finally starting to paint the back and side
exterior walls in October to match the rest of the building that was painted in 2011.
We are getting the plans ready for renovating the kitchen and Lower Hall floor to be worked on in Summer 2015, and will soon be
starting our 2015 Campaign.

DINNER GILD
We take great pride in serving the community dinner every Saturday evening at 6 PM. Volunteer cooks are always
welcomed and needed. Join us for our monthly meeting on the first Monday of each month in the Lower Gild Hall. Any
questions or comments are gladly accepted at [email protected] or on our Facebook page. Contact Laura
Wallace 302-743-5939 if you are interested in cooking a dinner.
Prices have increased this year. Adult Arden Club members will be $11, with adult non-Arden Club members charged
$13. Children 12 and under will be $6. Each dinner will also have a 50/50 drawing and there will be other small
fundraisers throughout the year. Our goal is the best Lower Gild Hall and new kitchen the Club has ever had!
Please join us for the 2014-2015 season, by making reservations via e-mail ([email protected]) or voice mail
message (792-7139) prior to 6:00 PM the Thursday before the dinner. We are going to stick to this deadline this
season! It is most important that you tell the reservationist (1) your name, (2) phone number, (3) who’s coming
(member, non-member, child), (4)if you would like the vegetarian alternative, and (5) if you know in advance if you will
taking your dinner home with you. Reservations on the night of the dinner will only be held until 6:30 PM! Please bring
your own container for take-outs and leftovers , we will sell containers for $1 if you do not bring your own!

LIBRARY GILD
Nancy King (former Arden resident) is the author of seven books of nonfiction, four novels, plays, and
essays, and is currently a consultant focusing on developing innovative literacy and drama programs in
schools, teaching writing, and working with older women to find ways to re-invent their lives. One of
her novels, The Stones Speak, was selected as a finalist in the New Mexico Books Award – 2009 and
was optioned for a film. Her latest, "Changing Spaces," is now available in the Arden Library.
The following is an excerpt from an interview between Nancy and Madi Prada:
M.P.: Where does your passion for stories, questions about identity, and the importance of selfdiscovery come from? I ask because it seems that all your books explore these themes.
N.K.: Stories saved my life. When I was a child, growing up in a difficult family, I would hide in a safe place, close my eyes,
imagine a theatre in my head, and tell myself a story about a heroic girl with all the qualities I didn’t think I had. Afterward I always
felt better. As an adult, dealing with a catastrophic illness and challenging life situations, telling myself stories gave me the energy to
face and confront what I needed to do. In my novels, as well as in life, the stories we are told about ourselves, the stories we tell
ourselves, as well as the stories we tell others, play a large part in the development of who we are. Self-discovery and identity are
intertwined. I grew up, metaphorically speaking, in a “fun house mirror.” My sense of self grew out of, and was dependent upon,
what others told me about myself. Much of what they said turned out to be distorted, damaging, and not true. It took a lot of years
before I began to realize that the stories told about me were lies, told to cover up what really happened, to protect those who had hurt
me. Even after I began to suss out enough of the truth to understand why I had made so many bad choices, changing my view of
myself was complicated and problematic. So much of how I had lived my life was based on what I had been told and, as a result,
what I experienced. Although these old voices still live inside me they no longer have the power they once did and I am freer to live
as I choose.

Gild elections have been held and the new officers are Co-chairs: Mary Catherine Kelley and Linda
Kimmelman; Business manager: Henry Porrecca; and Secretary: Claire Ennis. The Gild meets the first
Wednesday of every month at 7:30 PM. All are welcome.
Invitations have been sent to interested directors, and the decision for next summer’s play will be
announced at the November meeting. Also in November, we will provide information on the Young
Actors Workshop. Registration will be held in December.
The Spoon River anthology, previously sponsored by the Shakespeare Gild, will be on hiatus this
November. Stay tuned for next year.
