We are preparing for our summer production of Shakespeare’s King Lear.

Reservations can be secured two ways this year:
Call 302-529-7820 and follow the prompts to mailbox #4 for show reservations, giving your name, phone
number, date you want to see the show, and whether you are a member, non-member, senior, student,
or child.
Calls WILL NOT BE RETURNED to confirm your reservation UNLESS THE SHOW IS SOLD OUT!
E-mail [email protected] and tell our reservationist your name, date of show, member, non
-member, senior/student, or child. With this reservation, the reservationist will e-mail you back to
confirm your reservation and ask if any information is missing.
No money will be collected until the date of the show. Tickets are held at the reservation tent only until 7:15
on the night of the show. Cash or check only! No credit cards can be accepted.
Volunteers are needed for the production staff, including refreshments, parking, help with costumes, and help
with props. Please contact Linda Kimmelman at [email protected] if you are interested in helping
“behind the scenes.”
Please join us for our monthly meetings the first Wednesday of each month in the Bratten Room of the Lower
Gild Hall. After the business meeting, a member of the Gild will prepare a scene from one of the Bard's plays
for the group to read and then discuss. There is sure to be some lively discussion.

Spring Spruce Up Days
The spruce up will be on Saturday, May 9 and Saturday, May 16. Stop by mid-morning on these days ready to
rake, weed, sweep... After the rough winter, we will need some extra TLC to get our pool ready for summer.

SCHOLARS GILD
“How Did That Regulation Get There?”

Please join the Scholars Gild as we welcome Annie Gutsche to our May 19 discussion about how the
regulatory process works. Regulations affect almost every aspect of our lives, but few of us stop to think about
them - until perhaps one day a regulation is a help or a burden to you. What are regulations? What is the
process used to develop them at the federal level? What are the opportunities for stakeholders, including you,
interested members of the public, to be involved in the development of regulations? Regulations are always
evolving, so understanding the regulatory process can help you voice your opinion on how and what our
government regulates.
Annie Gutsche received her BS from UC Berkeley in 1987, continuing on to a PhD in Biomedical Engineering
from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1995. She started work as a researcher in DuPont's Central
Research and Development in 1998, then moved to DuPont Pioneer to work in Regulatory Affairs. As part of
her responsibilities, Annie interacts with a number of US agencies, including USDA, EPA, and FDA. And, let
us not forget, Annie is the current Chair of the Village of Ardentown.
The Scholars Gild discussions are held at 7:30 PM on the third Tuesday of the month (except July and August)
in the Bratten Room, Lower Gild Hall. If you would like to receive e-mail notifications and reminders, contact

BRIDGE GILD
HAPPY SPRING from the newly formed BRIDGE GILD. We look forward to seeing you!
The Bridge Gild meets in the basement of the Gild Hall the first and third Thursdays each month.
May dates are May 7 and May 21. The cost is $1 for Arden Club members and $3 for non-members.
Drummer’s Circle
The Arden Drummer’s Circle, sponsored by the Concert Gild, meets every third Sunday of each month at
1 PM (generally running about 2 hours or so). Beginners and professionals alike are invited to join with
us. We often play some common rhythms and then we improvise. Bring a drum or two, and/or percussion
instruments. In fair weather, we meet outdoors of the Gild Hall, but in cold or rainy weather we move into the Lower Gild Hall. We also sometimes have one or two evening events during the year that often
take the place of the monthly event.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Gild Hall Renovations Fundraising Update
Our campaign is going well but we still need MORE DONATIONS to reach our goal of $160,000. I am
pleased to report that so far, we have raised $110,565 which is 69% of our Goal. So far, 125 individual or family donors have contributed $21,378 to the campaign. In addition, we have had several 50/50 raffles and fundraisers raising $1,225, plus our major grant of $80,000 from the Crystal Trust and corporate grants from Dogfish Head beer and Café Gelato.
We still need an additional $50,000 in donations to be able to complete the work to improve
the foundation of Lower Hall and our Kitchen/Pantry renovations. This is our largest and last major project for
a while.
The impact of your past donations is easily visible with the many improvements that have been made to the
Hall in the past 5 years. Please consider giving now. Remember, your donations are fully tax deductible.

ARDENSINGERS GILD
Spring 2015 – The Sorcerer
“The Sorcerer” wraps up with final performances May 1-2, 2015 at 8:00 PM and May 2 at 2:00 PM. Stage
direction is by Ryan Goulden, with music direction by Helene Furlong. If you haven’t seen the show we

Fall 2015 – The Panto of the Opera
We had such fun with our Panto last fall that we decided to try another one authored by the same writer, Stuart
Ardern, a Brit with a wicked sense of humor. We will be holding a read-through of the show on Sunday, May
17, starting at 7 PM, and auditions for leads and new chorus members on Sunday, June 14, from 6:30 - 9 PM
and Tuesday, June 16 from 7-10 PM and Sunday.
This British comedy is definitely NOT a silent pantomime! The story of “The Panto of the Opera” revolves
around Madame Zola, the new owner of the Paris Opera house, who discovers that her premises are
threatened with closure by a villainous English Lord, that she is under perpetual scrutiny from a Health and
Safety inspector, and that the Opera House is haunted by the mysterious Phantom, who seems to be giving
singing lessons to Christine, a newcomer. So make your plans now to come join in the general absurdity of
this delightful panto version of “Phantom of the Opera.”
Anyone wishing to be added to our auditions mailing list to receive audition information when it is available

including links to the script, music, music recordings, and general information about pantos. Although we
hope that many of our lead performers will sing with the chorus on their musical numbers, only a few of the
leads have their own music, so auditions will also be open to those without strong musical skills. Auditions
are open to those 16 and older, although younger auditioners will also be considered, particularly if a parent is
involved in the show.
Rehearsals will be held Tuesday evenings from 7:30-10:00 and Sunday afternoons from 2:00-4:30, starting in
mid-September. Performances will be November 14, 20, & 21, 2015 at 8:00 PM and November 15 & 21 at
2:00 PM. Stage direction by Ken Mammarella and music direction by Helene Furlong.
GARDENERS GILD
The Gardeners Gild’s annual Garden Party will be held in Mary Rodgers' garden in Green Acres,
Delaware, on Monday, May 18, 2015, beginning at 5:30 PM. Mary's garden features a variety of
lush hostas and shrubs in a shaded setting. This is a potluck event. Plates, silverware, and beverages
will be provided. Please bring your favorite dish to share.

LIBRARY GILD
The Monopolists : Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World's Favorite Board Game by Mary
Pilon.

In the 1970s, an economics professor went to court against Parker Brothers, arguing that the company had
monopolized Monopoly. Ralph Anspach had designed an anti-Monopoly board game but received a
threatening letter from Parker Brothers claiming the name infringed on their trademark and asking him to stop
using it—do not pass Go, do not collect $200. It kicked off a years-long, David-versus-Goliath court battle
that led Anspach to discover the strange and complicated origins of one of America’s favorite games. As New
York Times reporter Pilon details in this surprising account, the game dates back to the early twentieth
century, when single-tax evangelist Lizzie Magie designed an educational game called the Landlord’s Game.
But her contribution became largely lost to history, and an out-of-work salesman passed it off as his invention
during the Great Depression. The book abounds with interesting tidbits for board-game buffs but treats its
subject seriously. After reading The Monopolists—part parable on the perils facing inventors, part legal
odyssey, and part detective story—you’ll never look at spry Mr. Monopoly in the same way again.

CONCERT GILD
Lower Dens show in Arden on May 8 has been cancelled. We hope to bring them back for a show in the fall,
but in the meantime we wish them the best of luck touring the UK with Belle and Sebastian!

Mary Pilon Book-signing Event
Mary Pilon, author of her new book, The Monopolists, will be giving a presentation and book-signing on
Friday evening, May 1, at 7:00 PM at the Buzz Ware Village Center, 2119 The Highway, Arden, DE 19810.
Mary Pilon is the author of The Monopolists, a book about the secret history of the board game, Monopoly. In
it, she traces the game's history from its politically minded feminist originator, through its evolution as a folk
game to a commercial blockbuster.
While investigating the game, Mary came to Arden, met with Ardenites and did research at the Arden Craft
Shop Museum to understand the connection of Henry George and the Landlord’s game with the game of
Monopoly.
Mary has worked at the New York Times as a sports reporter and at the Wall Street Journal where she focused
on economics and finance.
Refreshments will be served and Mary will answer questions and sign books.
Books are $25.00; please bring cash for purchase.

DINNER GILD
THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL SEASON OF DINNERS!
Last Dinner Of This Season Will Be May 2!
The Playground Committee will be serving beef or veggie sliders, macaroni salad, and baked
beans, all in a picnic-style format.
And Then The Real Work Begins!
First comes the packing of all the items in the kitchen and surrounding storage areas. Boxes and
various containers will be welcomed. Next comes the destruction of the old kitchen items
followed by ripping up the floor!
When we return for the first meal of the 2015-2016 season, we will all be in for a wonderful treat
– a fully functioning kitchen with all new appliances, a new floor, everything brought up to 2015
codes (more electrical outlets, proper ventilation, etc.) and better dinners than ever before!
The Dinner Gild would like to say THANK YOU to all the Gilds, Families, and Friends who
cooked meals over this season. It was a fun and successful season with more dinners feeding over
100 people each week than in previous seasons.
Laura Wallace will be looking to create the 2015-2016 dinner schedule beginning in July. Think
about gathering some friends and family to prepare a community dinner and have a fun time in the
kitchen.
