Rouhani adviser: Islamic State crisis coupled with US's ‘weakest president’ could mean nuclear
deal

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s adviser, Ali Younesi, said that the combination of the Islamic
State crisis and “the weakest president the US has ever had” provide an opportunity for a nuclear
agreement on its terms.
According to a report by MEMRI (the Middle East Media Research Institute), Iran’s pragmatic camp, led by
Rouhani’s mentor Hashemi Rafsanjani, is “pressuring the Obama administration to reach a comprehensive agreement with
Iran on the latter’s terms.”
According to this view, “the Obama administration desperately needs a substantial achievement to
show for its term in office, and therefore this is the time to pressure it.”
Younesi, Rouhani’s adviser on religious minorities, told Iran’s Fars News Agency earlier this month:
“I am not so optimistic about the nuclear negotiations, but both sides do want it to yield results. The
Americans want this more than other countries. Some ostensibly friendly countries, like Russia and
China, do not want it to yield results at all...
[but] America does, because, if Obama fails to achieve this, he will have no achievements
whatsoever.”
Younesi went on to add, “Obama is the weakest president the US has ever had, because he has suffered humiliating
defeat in this region, and his term in office saw the coming of the Islamic awakening that dealt the Americans the greatest
defeat.”
“It is during Obama’s term in office that terrorism spread to the greatest extent. During these eight
years, America suffered immense defeat, and that is why he wants to reach an agreement [with Iran]. But he is
very influenced by the Congress and the Zionist lobby... ” Younesi then said, according to the report, “ISIS
[Islamic State] poses a great danger to the Islamic world and to the world at large. We must minimize
this danger and force the Americans to meet our demands in the nuclear agreement, in a manner that
guarantees the interests of the Islamic Republic.”
“If this does not happen during Obama’s term, who knows when [such an opportunity] will come again,” commented
Younesi.
In a meeting with Swiss Ambassador to Tehran Giuilio Hass, Rafsanjani said that Iran’s current nuclear policy, which
he leads, would allow the US to end the nuclear file with Iran in return for resolving other crises such as that of the
Islamic State.
“If the Western officials do not manage to resolve their problems [with Iran] during the term of the [current] capable
government, what will they tell public opinion?” said Rafsanjani in the meeting, according to MEMRI. “In the present
circumstances, political excuses and [capitulating to] the obstacles [created] by the Zionist lobby will deprive the Western
countries of the best opportunity to solve most of the regional and even international problems with Iran’s help.”
Meanwhile, top Iranian officials sent mixed messages regarding the ongoing nuclear talks as the November 24
deadline approaches. “If the negotiating parties have the necessary political will as well [as Iran] in this regard, achieving
the comprehensive agreement will be possible within the next month,” said President Rouhani on Monday in a meeting
with Norway’s new ambassador to Iran, the country’s Tasnim News Agency reported.
However, a member of Tehran’s nuclear negotiating team also said on Monday that an extension of
the November 24 deadline is not on the table, an Iranian diplomat told Iran’s IRNA.
Iran’s parliament speaker, Ali Larijani, said on Sunday that Iran would not accept any limits on its nuclear program
except those “within the logical framework of transparency [measures] in the nuclear technology,” Tasnim reported.

At least 850 people have been executed in Iran in the past 15 months as part of a worsening human
rights situation under reformist President Hassan Rouhani, a UN official said Monday.
Ahmed Shaheed, the rights rapporteur for Iran, described a “surge in executions,” giving Iran the world’s highest
death-penalty rate per capita. “The range of capital crimes is shocking,” Shaheed told journalists. “We
have seen a person executed for making a donation to a foreign organization.”
The rapporteur said he was “shocked” by the hanging over the weekend of 26-year-old Reyhaneh Jabbari who was
convicted of murdering a former intelligence officer who, she claimed, had tried to sexually assault her.
Shaheed said he had repeatedly raised with Tehran questions about the fairness of her trial.
Iran has executed 852 people since June of last year, including eight juveniles, said the envoy, who is to present his
report to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. The surge in executions shows that Rouhani has failed to deliver on
campaign promises to improve the human rights situation in his country, a year after taking office, added Shaheed.
“He is unable to address the issues, unable to arrest this trend, to convert his promises which spoke to arresting this
trend into action,” Shaheed continued.
The rapporteur suggested that Rouhani lacked political backing, in particular from parliament, to advance his rights
agenda. Since his appointment in 2011, Shaheed has never been allowed to visit Iran, but he has spoken
to some 400 Iranians, making use of Skype and at times even receiving calls from prison.
Shaheed conveyed the concern from many Iranians that ongoing negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program had
allowed human rights to be placed on the back burner.
But the envoy said he had not seen a shift in emphasis from the United States and the West on human rights and that
southern countries like Brazil and South Africa were also raising these issues with Tehran.
In his report, Shaheed also raised concerns over freedom of the press, noting that 35 journalists are
currently behind bars in Iran.
At least 300 people are in prison for their religious practices, including 120 Bahais and 49
Christians.
The report also touched on a drop in the number of women enrolled at universities, from 62 percent in 2008 to 48
percent last year.

Tzipi Livni is a realistic politician. She represents the right and appropriate combination of a national and Zionist
approach with an approach pursuing a peace agreement. She has been trying with all her might to prevent the bi-national
state disaster. She has no illusions and she is not one of those ignorant supporters of a solution which includes a general
clearance sale.
This calls for a full disclosure: She offered me a secure place on her party's Knesset list. I turned down the offer, but
not because I oppose her way. Last Friday, in an interview to Nahum Barnea, she said things which should
be heard. But then came the surprise: "Anyone who claims that the ISIS problem can be solved without
a real effort to resolve the Palestinian problem is throwing sand in your eyes."
I read it and couldn't believe my eyes. Is this the politician I regard so much? John Kerry said something of the kind,
and tried to explain that it wasn't he who said it, but that it was what Arab states' leaders had told him. Now it turns out
that Livni herself is uttering this nonsense. What the hell is wrong with her?
That's sad, because all the important and true and justified things Livni has to say are seen in a completely different
manner after this statement. Does she really believe that there is a link between the Islamic State's growth, or the Islamic

Syria rebels attack last regime-held northwest city
Al-Nusra Front, Islamist militias launch ‘unprecedented’ assault on Idlib in bid to oust Assad’s forces

BEIRUT — Syrian rebels led by al-Qaeda loyalists launched a major assault on the government-held
city of Idlib Monday in a bid to consolidate their control over the northwest, a monitoring group said.
Rebels seized control of most of Idlib province early in the three-and-a-half-year-old civil war but troops have held out
in the provincial capital, resupplied by air.
Fighters of al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra Front and Islamist rebel units attacked the city from all sides,
the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. “Since dawn, fierce fighting has raged at army checkpoints all around
Idlib city,” said the Britain-based monitoring group, which has a wide network of sources inside Syria.
At least five rebel fighters were killed, the Observatory said, adding that it had no immediate word on any army losses.
Rebels made a previous attempt to take the city earlier this year but Monday’s assault was
“unprecedented, the biggest since the beginning of the revolt” in 2011, Observatory director Rami
Abdel Rahman told AFP.
Abdel Rahman said that the rebels had activated sleeper cells inside Idlib to launch attacks on the army behind its
lines. He said policemen who sympathized with the rebels joined the insurgents in a brazen attack on a key official
building in the city.
“Policemen backed by sleeper cell members of al-Nusra, already inside the city, attacked the governorate building but
they were quickly pushed back out by regime forces,” said Abdel Rahman.
Before the Syria war broke out, the city of Idlib was home to 165,000 people but the population has
increased with the arrival of hundreds of thousands of displaced people from other parts of the
country.
Idlib province lies on the border with Turkey and has long been one of the rebels’ principal supply
routes. As a result, rebel fighters in the province are generally better armed and equipped than their
counterparts elsewhere in Syria who have suffered a series of setbacks at the hands of the regime this year.

Netanyahu promises to keep building in Jerusalem

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Monday’s opening of the Knesset winter session defended
Israel’s right to build in Jerusalem and criticized the Palestinians for making unreasonable demands
for peace. As several MKs from Arab and left-wing parties interrupted his speech, Netanyahu plowed ahead, declaring
that Israel has the same right to build in Jerusalem as other nations do in their own capital cities, and that there was a wide
consensus in Israel to continue building throughout the city, as every government has done since Israel captured east
Jerusalem in the 1967 war.
“There is wide agreement among the public that Israel has the full right to build the Jewish
neighborhoods of Jerusalem,” the prime minister said. “Every Israeli government in the last 50 years
did that, and it is also clear to the Palestinians that those places will stay under Israeli control in any
mutual agreement.”
“The French build in Paris, the English build in London, the Israelis build in Jerusalem. Should we
tell Jews not to live in Jerusalem because it will stir things up?” Netanyahu asked.
“Israelis pray for ‘next year in the rebuilt Jerusalem,'” he continued. “And you tell us not to build in Jerusalem? We are
building, just like we built since the start of the state. On that there needs to be a clear agreement.”
He added: “Building is the natural answer to those who want to remove us from our land. They want death and we are
building life.”
The prime minister spoke soon after sources told The Times of Israel that Netanyahu has recommended plans be
advanced for about 1,000 housing units in East Jerusalem. The plans call for roughly 400 units in Har Homa, in the city’s
southeast, and 660 homes in Ramat Shlomo, in the northeast corner of the capital, according to the sources in the Prime
Minister’s Office. Netanyahu will also push new infrastructure projects in the West Bank, including roads that will also
serve the Palestinian population, a PMO source said.
Israel’s Channel 2 news reported Sunday night that Netanyahu is also in negotiations with right-wing lawmakers and
settler officials over approval for a large West Bank development project, including 2,000 new units, 12 new roads, parks,
student villages, and renovation of the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron.
Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein warned rowdy MKs to stop interrupting the proceedings as the
prime minister argued that it is not Israeli construction that provokes the conflict. “The violence
against us is not an outcome of the building in Jerusalem,” he said. “Terror comes from our enemies’
desire that we shouldn’t be here at all, in no place and in no part of Jerusalem. Not in Tel Aviv, or Haifa.
Since the dawn of Zionism, construction has been the natural and crushing answer to those are
harassing our existence and want to uproot us from our land. They want death, and we build here for life.”
Netanyahu panned the Palestinian for making demands on Israel without offering anything in return.
“The Palestinians demand from us the establishment of a Palestinian state without peace or security. They demand
withdrawal, the absorption of refugees and the division of Jerusalem. They aren’t prepared to agree to the the most basic
conditions of peace between two peoples, mutual recognition.”
“Israel will not agree to a Palestinian state without a true peace agreement, an agreement that will recognize Israel as
the state of the Jewish people, and that will include long-term and concrete security arrangements on the ground, that
enables Israel to defend herself, with her own might, against any threat.”
Netanyahu began by praising the IDF for its actions during the summer conflict against Hamas and declared that it is
the most moral army in the world.
Netanyahu also repeated his call on the global community to maintain sanctions on Iran and prevent it from building
nuclear weapons, a threat to the region he called even greater than that of the Islamic State and Muslim extremists.
“There is no greater danger to our area than Iran becoming a threshold nuclear state,” he said. “To beat the Islamic
State group but leave Iran as a threshold nuclear state is to win the battle but lose the war.”

Jerusalem mayor visits Temple Mount amid unrest

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat visited the Temple Mount Tuesday amid simmering tensions in the capital.
Barkat wrote on Twitter he made the trip with police in order to “gain a better understanding of
issues and challenges.”
The visit came as tensions around the site have flared with Palestinians claiming that Israelis intend to change the
status quo and allow Jewish prayer at the holy site. Clashes have broken out between police and rioters over the past
several months during visits by Jews to the site and officials have at times banning Muslim males under the age of 50 or
60 from the site.
Other parts of the capital have also simmered in recent days with daily incidents of rock throwing. Police have
bolstered their forces to quell unrest in Arab neighborhoods.
The mayor’s visit came a day after Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah toured the Temple
Mount compound and proclaimed that “there will not be a Palestinian state without East Jerusalem as its capital.”
The compound, holy to both Jews and Muslims, is the historical site of the Jewish Temples and currently houses the alAqsa Mosque.
At the same time, Jewish worshipers and right-wing politicians have been lobbying for legislation that would allow
Jews to pray at the site. Current regulations prohibit it.
Palestinian Authority and Hamas officials have accused Israel of trying to Judaize the site, with
Abbas denouncing “incursions by extremist settlers” and joining Hamas in calling for Palestinians to

On Monday, Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh held talks with his counterparts in the US, the UN and Europe
to pressure Israel to stop its “violations” on the Temple Mount, according to the Petra news agency. Jordan considers itself
a custodian of the holy site. [The only reason Jordan has anything to do with the Temple Mount is because
Moshe Dayan thought it would be helpful to ‘make some concession’ to the arabs after they trounced
them in 1967 – a gross error. – rdb]
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu alleged on Sunday that rising tensions between Muslim worshipers and Israeli
security forces were the fault of “the Palestinian Authority, [President] Mahmoud Abbas, Hamas and personnel from
Islamic organizations.”
The city has been experiencing near-daily protests and incidents of violence throughout East Jerusalem, including a
terror attack last Wednesday in which a Palestinian man plowed his car into a crowd of people near a light rail stop,
killing two people including a three-month-old girl.
On Friday, security forces killed a Palestinian teen in the West Bank over the weekend after he allegedly attempted to
hurl a Molotov cocktail at traffic on Highway 60, sparking more riots.
Tensions have been high since June, when three Israeli teenagers were kidnapped and killed by Palestinian terrorists in
the West Bank. Jewish extremists retaliated by kidnapping and killing a Palestinian teenager in East Jerusalem. The

Justice Minister Tzipi Livni said Monday that while Jewish residents have the right to live anywhere in Jerusalem,
including the predominantly Arab neighborhood of Silwan, the delicate situation calls for particular caution and restraint.
Speaking to Channel 2, Livni also said she will see to it personally that the bill to bypass the High Court will be shot
down, and hailed the approval of the Conversion Bill on Monday.
Regarding Jews moving into Silwan, which has been condemned by local Arab residents, Livni said: “I will defend the
right” of Israelis and Jews to live anywhere in Jerusalem, but added Knesset members have the responsibility not to fan
the flames in the “explosive” area. Livni’s comments came in response to Housing Minister Uri Ariel’s announcement
that he may take up residence in Silwan, in solidarity with the Jewish residents.
Livni told Channel 2 that Ariel’s decision “adds nothing to the right [of Jews] to live in Jerusalem,” and said the
response from right-wing MKs, including urging a change to the status quo on the Temple Mount, was “unnecessary.”
With that, the justice minister also criticized the Tel Aviv municipality for canceling trips to the capital over the weekend

Despite tensions with US, Israel to purchase second batch of F-35 fighter jets

defense sources said.
The Israel Air Force will set up its first F-35 squadron in Nevatim Airbase in the Negev desert, which currently houses
F-16 squadrons and C-130 Hercules transport planes.
The F-35 will ensure Israel’s regional qualitative edge in the first quarter of the 21st century, defense chiefs say.
Israel signed a $2.75 billion deal to purchase a squadron of 19 F-35s from Lockheed Martin in 2012, and received

Israel’s first new non-Bedouin Arab town set for approval
Galilee community, intended for 40,000 people, aims to combine modern living with traditional Arab culture

The first new non-Bedouin Arab town to be built in Israel since the establishment of the state is to
be sent for approval by the National Planning and Building Council. Aimed at middle-class families, the new
town is scheduled for review by the council next week, Haaretz reported on Monday.
The community is to provide housing for some 40,000 Arab residents and will be constructed next
to the existing town of Jadeidi-Makr in the Galilee region of northern Israel.
Architect Oren Mebel has spent four years working on the plan, which began with a government decision in 2008 and
was backed by the Israel Lands Administration, the Ministry of Housing and Construction, and the Interior Ministry.
Following approval from the national council, the regional
planning authority will review the plan and provide feedback.
The University of Haifa’s Rassem Khamaisi, who helped plan
the new town, explained the need for a large-scale Arab housing
project.
“Not a great distance from the planned location there is an
Arab population living in a dense urban construction,” he said.
“The rural Arab population is going through a process of
urbanization, while on the other hand there are not enough
opportunities being created.”
Khamaisi predicted that by 2020 the Arab population will
have increased by 700,000 and claimed that existing Jewish
population centers don’t offer a viable housing solution.
Slated for land covering some 2,630 dunams (650 acres), the
municipal status of the new community is yet to be decided. But
Jadeidi-Makr would like to see it included within its own municipal boundaries, the report said.
The town is planned to combine modern living with traditional Arab culture. Options under consideration include
private gardens and communal orchards for residents of the buildings, and combined gardens forming a central
community region similar to those in traditional Arab villages. However, many of the buildings will be six stories high,
whereas in Arab towns two or three stories is the norm.
An industrial park and high-tech center are also planned on the outskirts of the community. [So just tell me folks,

Planners met with representatives from the Arab community, including municipal leaders and writers, to gain a better
understanding of how to customize the town for its target population.
However, there were those who cast doubts and objections on the new town.
Some argued that towns should be open to all populations and not just limited to either Jews or Arabs. Another worry
was that the town will weaken other Arab communities by drawing off economically stronger residents. There were also
concerns that some of the land planned for the town was appropriated from residents of Jadeidi-Makr.

Abbas calls for emergency UN Security Council meeting on Jerusalem

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas submitted a request Monday for an emergency UN
Security Council meeting to discuss the unrest in Jerusalem, the Palestinian Ma’an News Agency
reported. According to the communique, the Palestinian leader is calling for international intervention to stop “Israeli
violations” in Jerusalem, and alleged “attacks” by “settlers” at the al-Aqsa Mosque. [there are NO VIOLATIONS in
Jerusalem by anyone’s standards except the fact that the arabs keep rioting. – rdb]
Abbas’s spokesman said the PA would ask the UN to prevent further building over the Green Line, amid reports that
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved 1,000 new units in East Jerusalem Monday. Earlier Monday, Abbas said
news of the planned 1,000 new homes would spur Ramallah to continue its drive for statehood.
“These developments push us to decide and turn to international agencies and the [UN] Security Council as soon as
possible,” Abbas said in a statement. “This announcement amounts to evidence of an intent to further commit crimes
defined by and punishable under international law,” Saeb Erekat, a top aide to Abbas and former chief peace
negotiator, said in a release from his office.
A source in Netanyahu’s office said Monday morning the prime minister had okayed the planning for some 600 homes
in the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood and another 400 in Har Homa. The source also said the state would go ahead with the
building of 12 new roads in the West Bank, which would also be used by Palestinians.
The move is likely to cause an “explosion” of violence,” warned senior Palestinian official Jibril Rajoub. “Such
unilateral acts will lead to an explosion,” Rajoub told reporters at a news conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
Rajoub, a senior figure within Abbas’s Fatah movement, said it was likely that such a move would only inflame tensions
in the eastern sector of the city, which has been swept by almost-daily clashes over the past four months.
It would be a mistake to expect the Palestinians to simply ignore such actions, Rajoub added. “Mr. Netanyahu should
not expect a white flag from the Palestinian people,” he said.
Abbas sent an urgent message to the United States Sunday, asking the administration to stop “Israeli escalations” in
East Jerusalem.
According to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA, Abbas emphasized what he described as “incursions by
extremist settlers” into the al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount. He warned that Israeli actions around holy sites would
lead to a dangerous and uncontrollable “explosion.” [Horse Hockey! – rdb]
Netanyahu’s announcement came a day after Israeli politicians warned of a backlash following a report that Netanyahu
intended to push through some 2,000 new homes in the West Bank as well as a large package of infrastructure projects, in
a deal with settlement leaders and right-wing lawmakers.
On Monday, Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah visited the al-Aqsa Mosque. At the shrine — on a
hilltop compound, revered by both Jews and Muslims — Hamdallah declared that “there will not be a Palestinian state
without East Jerusalem as its capital.”
The Temple Mount has been a source of friction between Israel and the Palestinians in recent months, with
Palestinians frequently clashing with police in protests against Jewish visitors to the compound and Israeli politicians
calling for Jews to be allowed to pray there.
Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon granted Hamdallah and other Palestinian officials permission to
travel to the Temple Mount. But Netanyahu alleged on Sunday that rising tensions between Muslim worshipers and Israeli
security forces were the fault of “the Palestinian Authority, [President] Mahmoud Abbas, Hamas, and personnel from
Islamic organizations.”
Palestinian Authority and Hamas officials have accused Israel of trying to Judaize the site, with Abbas denouncing
“incursions by extremist settlers” and joining Hamas in calling for Palestinians to defend it.
The visit by Hamdallah comes as the city continues to experience near-daily protests and incidents of violence in East
Jerusalem, including a terror attack last Wednesday in which a Palestinian man plowed his car into a crowd of people near

Green flags wave from entrances to houses on either side of the street. Hamas flags. 24 hours after the funeral of Abed
a-Rahman a-Shaludi, who committed the terror attack in the Jerusalem light rail, the tensions in his village of Silwan are
acutely felt and the rally near his home attracts many residents.
"Hamas were the first to take over the event," K., one of the village's leaders, explains the noticeable radicalization in
Silwan, "and in that way they appropriated the shahid."
Meanwhile, the rally reaches its climax. One of the Hamas members is making an inciteful speech against Israel and
against the settlers who chose to live in the village.

"While the amount of settlers here increases, so is Hamas' popularity," K. explains. "The Hamas men come to children
and tell them: 'Look at the Israelis taking our lands,' and that's how they convince them that violent resistance against
Israel is the best solution. Israel's giving terrorism a reason to grow."
'A ticking time bomb'
Fatah and Hamas are fighting for control of Silwan, much like in the other villages of East
Jerusalem. While tensions between the two Palestinian factions are evident, there's one issue the two
sides can agree on - the residents of Silwan are living inside a pressure cooker.
"It's a ticking time bomb," N., one of the prominent activists in the village, explains. "People here feel like they're
being backed against the wall with every step. The Jewish takeover of houses, led by the Ir David Foundation (which aims
to strengthen the Jewish connection to Jerusalem) and the Ateret Cohanim yeshiva, makes people here understand that
resistance is the only option for them - and then the stone becomes a weapon. The youth feel like throwing stones is their
only way to express the rage they feel inside. This is the reality they are born into. They don't know anything else
anymore."
N. refuses to accept the claim that a different education could affect the way the rioting youth thinks and acts. "The
Jews come to us and sit among us, not the other way around," he says. "So what do you want me to do, sit in silence?"
The accusatory finger, however, is pointed at the police, which Silwan's residents say inflames the tensions in the area.
"Undercover policemen come in here with masks on and encourage the youth to start throwing stones," N. claims. "As
soon as the mess of their own creation starts, they stop it and detain them."
'The settlers scare the kids' [So who really believes that the little terrorists are scared? – rdb]
Silwan's residents reject claims of a "Quiet Intifada" in Jerusalem, saying the situation has yet to deteriorate to that
point. However, they warn, the spirit of the intifada is already in the air.
"In the end, there will be a moment in which everything explodes," the village's youth claim. "One more death in
Silwan, or the destruction of a house here, could be what leads to a third intifada."
They say Hamas is doing everything in its power to flame the tensions in order to encourage a
larger-scale violent outburst.
Meanwhile, tensions are felt in every moment and every corner of Silwan. The Palestinians and Jews live alongside
each other in the crowded village, which is considered a neighborhood of Jerusalem, and in the best of cases stay out of
each other's way. In the worst of cases, their encounters quickly turn into a violent confrontation.
To one side of the street there's a private security jeep, its windshields cracked from stone-throwing, driving by one of
the houses with an Israeli flag flying overhead. The entrance to most of the Jewish homes is barred with an electric gate,
and many security cameras adorn the outer walls.
On the other side of the road there's a group of idle Palestinian youth eyeing the jeep, with stares full of hate.
"The new settlers that moved in are trying to be like Abu Ali," K. says. "They walk around with tear gas canisters,
playing with them so our kids are too afraid to mess with them. That's how the hatred seeping into our youth starts."
'What does Ariel want here?'
The residents have already heard of Housing Minister Uri Ariel's intentions to move to Silwan, and they are furious.
"What does he want here?" K. asks. "He just wants to add another fuse that would lead to an explosion."
Meanwhile, a police vehicle passes by with flickering blue lights, slowly driving downhill - towards the mourning tent
put up by the terrorist Shaludi's family.
"Right now everything is quiet here," the village's youth explain. "You see there is no rioting? So why are the police
here? It just gives youth a reason to start stone-throwing and no one knows how this would end."
Everyone knows Shaludi in Silwan. He has turned into the village's hero, and signs praising the "shahid" can be found
everywhere. This is how a role model is created for the youth of Silwan.
"They grow up and remember what they're going through, and are likely to do exactly what Shaludi did," K. says. "I'm
sure some of them will."
Despite it all, the residents of Silwan believe they will come up on top in the end.
"The occupation will end," N. and K. say. "The question is how it would happen - and this remains unknown."

Egyptian reports claim gunmen who killed 30 troops were trained in Gaza
Bombers entered Sinai through tunnels from Hamas territory, used stolen Israeli weaponry, Cairo officials say

Gunmen who killed more than 30 Egyptian soldiers at a Sinai checkpoint this weekend were trained
in the Gaza Strip and used stolen Israeli explosives and equipment, officials in Cairo told local media
on Monday. According to a report in the Egyptian El-Watan daily newspaper, initial investigation of the incident found
that the attack was orchestrated by the Sinai-based Salafist extremist group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis and that the bombers
were trained in the Gaza Strip under Mumtaz Durmush, head of Gaza’s extremist Army of Islam terror group.
After infiltrating into the Sinai Peninsula via smuggling tunnels from Gaza, the bombers used stolen
Israeli explosives and remote controlled devices to carry out the deadly attack, the pro-regime paper
reported. It was not clear from the report how the Gaza-based terrorist groups obtained the Israeli
equipment. Hamas is known to have amassed considerable amounts of Israeli army weaponry and
equipment, some of which was used in the summer’s Israel-Hamas conflict.
An earlier report in London-based Arabic newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat on Monday quoted an Egyptian Interior
Ministry official saying that Palestinian militant groups were behind the attack. Maj. Gen. Sameeh Beshadi, former head
of security in the Northern Sinai district, told the paper that there was “no doubt that Palestinian elements had taken part
in the attacks” after slipping into Egypt from the Gaza Strip.
Hamas deputy politburo chief Mousa Abu Marzouk told Egyptian TV Monday that Hamas had no involvement in the
attack. “We regret hearing about any drop of blood spilled in Egypt or anywhere in the Arab world as such news is very
painful,” Marzouk was quoted by Egypt’s RNN News saying, denying any connection between the Islamist group ruling
Gaza and the Sinai attack.
Militants launched the complex assault on the checkpoint near the northern Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid Friday. It
involved a car bomb, rocket-propelled grenades and roadside bombs placed to target rescuers. At least 31 Egyptian
soldiers were killed in the attack.
The bombing was one of the deadliest attacks targeting security forces since the army ousted president Mohammed
Morsi last year. Egypt declared a three-month state of emergency in the Sinai Peninsula in response to the attack.
Egypt has been quick to point the finger of blame at Gaza, and on Sunday barred a Hamas
delegation from crossing into Egypt ahead of planned indirect talks with Israel on a permanent Gaza
ceasefire. Those talks were suspended. [You can bet the occupier of the Whitehouse will be most
distressed and condemn Egypt for delaying and interfering with the negotiations. Perhaps if Egypt

Egypt’s deputy interior minister, Samih Bashadi, told Saudi-owned daily A-Sharq Al-Awsat that the bombing was
carried out with the help of Palestinian operatives. Bashadi was elaborating on statements made earlier by Egyptian
President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who spoke of “foreign hands” involved in the attack.
Hamas’s interior ministry spokesman Iyad Al-Bozum asserted in comments posted on his ministry’s website Saturday
that there were no more tunnels between Gaza and Sinai: “Tunnels between Gaza and Egypt no longer exist and have
become a thing of the past since the Egyptian army shut them more than two years ago.”
But the Egyptian army seemed unconvinced. According to London-based Arab daily Al-Hayat, the
army has begun a process of “temporary demographic redistribution” of the population living along
the Egyptian side of the border, removing 680 families from their homes to create a buffer zone of 1.5
to 3 kilometers.
The Egyptian army has poured troops and armor into north Sinai to crush an insurgency that has raged since Morsi’s
ouster. Earlier on Monday, Egyptian forces killed eight suspected jihadists in an unspecified location in the northern Sinai.
Jihadists, who have killed scores of security personnel, say their attacks are retaliation for the wide-scale government
crackdown against Morsi’s supporters.

weekend, despite efforts to curb its
spread.
And while the disease typically dies on
surfaces within hours, research has
discovered it can survive for more than
seven weeks under certain conditions.
During tests, the UK’s Defence
Science and Technology
Laboratory (DSTL) found that the
Zaire strain will live on samples
stored on glass at low
temperatures for as long as 50
days.

The tests were initially carried out by researchers from DSTL before the current outbreak, in 2010, but the strain
investigated is one of five that is still infecting people globally.
The findings are also quoted in advice from the Public Agency of Health in Canada.
Ebola was discovered in 1976 and is a member of the Filoviridae family.
This family includes the Zaire ebolavirus (Zebov), which was first identified in 1976 and is the most virulent; Sudan
ebolavirus, (Sebov); Tai Forest ebolavirus; Ebola-Reston (Rebov), and Bundibugyo ebolavirus (Bebov) - the most recent
species, discovered in 2008.
For their 2010 paper, ‘The survival of filoviruses in liquids, on solid substrates and in a dynamic aerosol’, Sophie
Smither and her colleagues tested two particular filoviruses on a variety of surfaces.
These were the Lake Victoria marburgvirus (Marv), and Zebov.
Each was placed into guinea pig tissue samples and tested for their ability to survive in different liquids, and on
different surfaces at different temperatures, over a 50-day period.
When stored at 4° (39°F), by day 26, viruses from three of the samples were successfully extracted; Zebov on the glass
sample, and Marv on both glass and plastic.
By day 50, the only sample from which the virus could be recovered was the Zebov from tissue on
glass.
‘This study has demonstrated that filoviruses are able to survive and remain infectious, for
extended periods when suspended within liquid and dried onto surfaces,’ explained the researchers.
‘Data from this study extend the knowledge on the survival of filoviruses under different conditions and provide a
basis with which to inform risk assessments and manage exposure.’
The researchers do stress that these tests were carried out in a controlled lab environment, and not in the real world, but

U.S. soldiers returning from Liberia monitored for Ebola in Italy

U.S. soldiers returning from Liberia are being placed in isolation in Vicenza, Italy out of concern for
the Ebola virus, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports. The soldiers being
monitored include Maj. Gen. Darryl Williams who was the commander of the U.S. Army in Africa but turned over duties
to the 101st Airborne Division over the weekend, Martin reports. There are currently 11 soldiers in isolation.
They apparently were met by Carabinieri in full hazmat suits. If the policy remains in effect, everyone returning from
Liberia - several hundred - will be placed in isolation for 21 days. Thirty are expected in today, Martin reports.
A Pentagon spokesman calls it "enhanced monitoring." The soldiers are confined to a building and unable to
see their families, Martin reports. The decision made by the Army and applies only to soldiers returning from Liberia.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will decide whether to make isolation apply to members of all services returning from
Liberia.
Martin reports that the soldiers in isolation are in a building that is used as a command headquarters. It has
communications - secure communications - so that Gen. Williams and his staff can do work. It also has a gym.
The World Health Organization said more than 10,000 people have been infected with Ebola in the outbreak that came
to light last March, and nearly half of them have died, mostly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

The FBI has identified an employee of a federal contracting firm suspected of being the so-called "second leaker" who
turned over sensitive documents about the U.S. government's terrorist watch list to a journalist closely associated with exNSA contractor Edward Snowden, according to law enforcement and intelligence sources who have been briefed on the
case.
The FBI recently executed a search of the suspect's home, and federal prosecutors in Northern Virginia have opened up
a criminal investigation into the matter, the sources said.
But the case has also generated concerns among some within the U.S. intelligence community that top Justice
Department officials — stung by criticism that they have been overzealous in pursuing leak cases — may now be more
reluctant to bring criminal charges involving unauthorized disclosures to the news media, the sources said. One source,

Latest ISIS Propaganda Video Purports to Show Kobane
In the latest video of kidnapped British journalist John Cantlie, he claims to be speaking from the besieged Syrian city
of Kobane.

The Islamic State (ISIS) on Monday released a new video featuring British hostage John Cantlie, in which he speaks
from what is alleged to be the besieged Syrian city of Kobane. The film begins with footage shot from an “Islamic State
Army” drone, according to The Guardian.
The video differs from previous ones in which the 43-year-old British photojournalist has appeared,
as this time he is shown in the open air and with a city backdrop behind him rather than behind a desk
and wearing an orange jumpsuit, the report noted.
The journalist, who has been held for over two years, says at one point in the latest video that hilly terrain behind him
belongs to Turkey, which borders the Syrian region where Kobane is located, and that a Turkish flag can be seen flying in
the distance.
Slickly produced and cut with footage of armed men moving through streets, the 5 minute 30 second video begins with
footage of a ruined city, which a caption says has been filmed from an ISIS drone.
Cantlie calmly tells viewers that ISIS forces have pushed deep into the heart of Kobane, where they have been battling
Kurdish militia, and now control the city’s eastern and southern sectors.
Wearing a black shirt, he also cites recent media reports and comments by a Pentagon official about the fighting over
the city and says, “The point is, from where I’m standing right now I can see large swaths of the city.”
“I can even see the Turkish flag flying behind me and all I’ve seen here in the city of Kobani is [ISIS] mujahideen.”
The video comes two days after the release of another video, in which Cantlie said that captives have been waterboarded
for trying to escape.
Its release came just days after his father, Paul Cantlie, 80, died from complications after contracting pneumonia.
In the latest video, he also repeats claims that U.S. airdrops meant for Kurdish forces have ended up in the hands of
ISIS, saying, “The mujahideen is being resupplied by the hopeless United States air force who parachuted two crates of
weapons and ammunition straight into the outstretched arms of the mujahideen.
“The battle for Kobane is coming to an end. The mujahideen are just mopping up now,” he declared, according to The
Guardian.
Cantlie was first paraded in front of the cameras last month, promising a series of videos giving the real story of ISIS.

Fight Against Ebola Hits High Seas

The fight against Ebola has hit the high seas, Walla! News reports Tuesday - as Israeli ports have
been advised to screen all passengers arriving in the Holy Land. Ports in Haifa and Ashdod will now screen
all arriving passengers for signs of the Ebola virus, including vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding, or fever above 38 C (100.4 F).
In addition, every passenger must declare whether or not they have visited West Africa within the
last 21 days. Passengers who refuse to submit to screenings will be obligated, instead, to bring
documentation proving their full health from a medical provider in their home country upon arrival.
Yigal Maor, head of the Maritime Administration of Transport, stated that the decision is simply a

"In light of the spread of the epidemic of Ebola in the world and at the request of the Ministry of Health, we were
requested to heighten our vigilance, and institute procedures according to which each ship and yacht coming to Israel,
must report when they are approaching Israel's territorial waters, if a passenger on board is experiencing a symptom or
symptoms that may indicate the development of Ebola," Maor said.
If one of the passengers who has visited one of the countries in Africa which has fallen to the Ebola
epidemic within the past 21 days, the vessel will be flagged and the Ministry of Health will be alerted.
The Ministry will then decide whether the vessel could enter Israel's territorial waters. If not, it will be
kept at a distance and will not be allowed to dock at Israeli ports.
Ebola has already infected at 10,000 people and killed over 4,500 in West Africa, the World Health Organization
(WHO) reported early Sunday morning. So far, it has hit Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Spain and the United States.
WHO reported earlier this month that with unofficial figures included, the disease is showing a 70% rate of mortality,
much higher than its traditional 50% rate.
Israel has been readying itself for the possibility of the epidemic arriving on its soil in other ways throughout the past
several weeks, and conducted an "Ebola preparedness drill" in Ben-Gurion airport earlier this month.

American Airlines canceled a London-bound flight out of Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday after a
passenger's phone picked up a WiFi network named "Al-Quida Free Terror."
LAX police officers boarded the plane about 10 p.m. and investigated the incident, reported the Los Angeles Times. A
photograph posted online of one passenger's phone shows it connected with the full-strength WiFi hotspot.
Officials, though, determined no crime had been committed, police Sgt. Karla Ortiz said.
"Passengers were interviewed and cleared to continue with their travel plans," she said in a statement.
Nevertheless, the incident prompted the airline to cancel the scheduled flight, stranding many passengers in Los
Angeles for a day.
