W-h-o-o-o-s-h! That was the sound of the first nine weeks of school flying by! Can
you believe it? Well, believe it or not, Friday, October 10th marks the end of the
first nine weeks. Report cards will be distributed during our Fall Conferences
which begin on the 20th. Teachers sent home the Fall Conference letters on
Tuesday. This is an exciting time for teachers to share the academic progress your
child is making, and it is a great opportunity for you to ask questions, as well. We
hope you can all attend the conference. Also, be sure to visit the Book Fair in the
Media Center during conference week.
We’re on the Web!
As you can see from the calendar, assessment season is upon us. Beginning this
week, students in grades 1 and 3 will take the Cognitive Abilities Test. This test
http://www.cobbk12.
org/RockyMount/
measures student performance on abilities related to success in school subjects.
Next week, our third and fifth grade students will begin the Iowa Test. The Iowa
test is a norm referenced assessment that measures student achievement in comparison to other students
nationwide. Students will be tested in Reading, Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and
Sources of Information. I would like to encourage you to keep the following tips in mind.
See us at:
1. Be sure that your child gets adequate amounts of sleep during the testing window – actually –
getting enough rest is always a good idea : )
2. It is important that your child eats a healthy breakfast the morning of the assessment.
3. Provide a calm and unhurried environment as your child gets ready for school.
4. Avoid tardiness or absences. Once testing begins, students are not allowed into the classroom.
Students perform best when tests are taken in a familiar environment. Make-ups are completed
with certified personnel -other than the child’s teacher- and in an environment less familiar to them
–typically a conference room.

5. Be supportive and encouraging, all the while being careful not to create undue test anxiety.
We all perform our best when we are relaxed, rested, well fed and confident in our ability to be
successful.
6. Also, we would ask all parents to avoid coming to lunch during our testing days. Many
times the schedule has to change at the last minute which can cause some confusion. Additionally,
we try to keep the building as quiet as possible during our testing days. Thank you : )
The Lassiter High School Homecoming Parade will be Friday, October 10th at
5:30 p.m. For our families that are new to our community, the parade will start
in the parking lot between Wendy’s and the BP gas station, run along
Shallowford toward the school, and end at the bus lanes by Lassiter. Our Teacher
of the Year, Allison Callahan, and our Classified Employee of the year, Lisa Dick
will be riding in a very special float created by our Student Leadership Team members and their sponsors!
Everyone loves a parade and we hope to have a big turnout from our community.
Thank you for being such a supportive community! It is such an honor to work in such a positive
environment.
Principal May
$50 for the Foundation
Thank you to all who have donated so far to our $50 For the Foundation
campaign. We are excited to be offering a Special Science Lab to the class that has
the most participation (number of students donating not dollars donated). There are
beakers in the cafeteria tracking each class. The campaign ends October 24th, so if
you haven't donated yet, you still can! If you need a form you can click here for a
donation form or click here to donate by credit card.
Thank you for Supporting Our Science!

Veteran’s Day Celebration
Our Rocky Mount community is making preparations to honor all veterans who have served or are currently serving to
protect our country’s freedom. Save the date and please join us in the Rocky Mount cafeteria as we pay tribute
through a musical presentation, Power Point and light brunch on Tuesday, November 11 th at 9:00 am.
If you have family members who are veterans and you would like to include them in this Power Point, please send an
electronic attachment to [email protected] with the name of the veteran and relationship to the student at
Rocky Mount in an email.
If you cannot send a digital copy, we will be displaying photos of veterans in the Rocky Mount lobby. Please send in a
paper copy of the photo. On the back of the photo, be sure to include the following: Veteran’s name, branch of
service, student’s name submitting photo and their homeroom teacher.
You are welcome to do both the Power Point and the bulletin board.
ALL PHOTOS ARE DUE BY NOVEMBER 4TH if you would like them included in the Power Point and/or on the bulletin
board.
Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Our Fall Book Fair is October 20-24 (Conference Week)
Enter the Kingdom of Books and shop our Scholastic Book Fair before or after your student’s conference
and help support our Media Center! The Book Fair will be open every day at 8:00am, and classes will
visit during school hours to browse books and complete Wish Lists. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday
the Book Fair will be open until 3:30pm, and on Wednesday we have extended hours until
6:00pm. The Book Fair closes down on Friday, October 25th at 10:00am. There will be many titles
to choose from at every reading level and lots of great bargains. Be sure to also check out the Classroom
Wish List located next to the checkout desk to help expand your student’s classroom library. Proceeds
benefit the Rocky Mount Media Center, allowing for the purchase of new and replacement books.
Volunteers will be needed to help make our Book Fair successful. Shifts will be available in 2 hour
blocks, but we appreciate any amount of time you are able to give. It is very difficult to schedule volunteers
with a specific class, but you are always welcome to shop with your student(s) when his/her class visits,
and volunteer during another time that fits your schedule. Look for volunteer forms in your students'
Tuesday folders this week. Contact Stacee Michaud at [email protected] with any
questions or to volunteer.

Welcome Desk
We are again working through our Room Parents to help staff the Welcome Desk. It is a vital link between
visitors, our staff and our teachers. Please be a part of this great program! The sign-up process is working
through Volunteer Spot. Our Room Parents will simply be passing the information along each month for
you to act upon. What we want to do is make it easy for you to help. Here is what you need to do:
1) Look at the days your class is assigned and see where there are CURRENTLY openings. If you have
questions regarding when your class is scheduled, just ask your Room Parent.
2) If you can fill one of these spots, or if another day works better for you (openings can be filled by
anyone—first come, first serve) go to the following link and sign up where there is an opening.
a) Click this link to go to our invitation page on Volunteer Spot: http://vols.pt/sfrMjQ.
b) Enter your email address: (You will NOT need to register an account on Volunteer Spot)
c) Sign up! Choose your spots – Volunteer Spot will send you an automated confirmation and
