John ‘Jack’ Briggs, Jr., 71, Family Man;
Dedicated to Helping Kids and Families
John R. “Jack” Briggs, Jr., 71, of
Derry, N.H. died on Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at his home surrounded
by his loving family.
He was born in New York City on
March 21, 1943, a son of the late John
R. and Mary (McMahon) Briggs. Jack
resided in Derry since 1981, formerly
living in Simsbury, Conn. He attended
Fairfield University, where he sang
in the glee club. It was at a glee club
concert that he met wife Marcia. They
married in 1967.
He enlisted in the Air Force and
was stationed at Kincheloe Air Force
Base in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He spent one year in Vietnam
writing for the 7th Air Force News.
Once back in civilian life, he worked
in public relations for the John
Hancock Insurance Company in both
Boston and Chicago. In 1981 he began working in public relations for
Public Service of New Hampshire.
Devoted to making a difference,
Jack was president of the Derry
Chamber of Commerce in 1999 and
was named its Citizen of the Year in
2002. The Upper Room, an organization dedicated to improving the lives
of children and families, awarded
him its Bill Burke Award in 2009. In
retirement he and Marcia embarked
on a busy schedule of travel, visiting
Europe, Asia and South America.
Jack was a faith-filled communicant at St. Catherine of Siena Church
in Manchester. With Marcia, his ministries included leadership in Worldwide Marriage Encounter and pre-
paring engaged couples for the sacrament of marriage, teaching CCD and
confirmation classes. Jack lived a rich
and full life, full of laughter, dancing
and song. Proud grandfather of little
2-year-old John, he was happy to be
known as Pepere.
He is survived by his loving wife of
47 years, Marcia (Houde) Briggs, and
children, Kate Briggs of Somerville,
Mass. and Matt Briggs of Lima, Peru,
along with his daughter-in-law, Taylor (Bolz) Briggs; grandson, John, and
a granddaughter on the way, and his
sister, Peggy Briggs of Garwood, N.J.
Following cremation, calling hours
will be held on Tuesday, October 28,
from 4 to 8 p.m., in the Peabody
Funeral Homes and Crematorium,
290 Mammoth Road, Londonderry,
N.H. A Liturgy of Christian Burial
will be celebrated on Wednesday,
October 29, at 11 a.m., in Ste. Marie
Parish, 378 Notre Dame Avenue,
Manchester, N.H. Committal services
will be held privately in the New
Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery
in Boscawen. With Jack having served
on the executive board of The Upper
Room, memorial contributions in lieu
of flowers can be made to The Upper

Helen E. MacRitchie, Active Volunteer;
Had Taught In Westfield Public Schools
Helen Evelyn MacRitchie died
peacefully at her home in Westfield
on Tuesday, July 23, 2013.
She was born on January 31, 1923
in Niagara Falls, Ontario. For most
of her childhood, she lived in the
neighboring community of Stamford, which subsequently merged
into Niagara Falls.
She graduated from Stamford Collegiate High School. She earned her
bachelor’s degree at University College of the University of Toronto;
the degree was a teacher preparation
degree. While at the University of
Toronto, she volunteered as an ambulance driver; when wounded soldiers arrived at the Toronto train
station, she transported them to local hospitals. Later, she earned her
master’s degree at Kean University,
and pursued further graduate studies at Montclair State University.
In 1950, she married William
James MacRitchie, a chemical engineer who specialized in metallurgical engineering. They remained
married for 61 years until his death
in 2012. They had three children:
Kenneth Lyon MacRitchie, of Red
Bank, N.J., Ian Alexander
MacRitchie, who died in 1982, and
Andrea Elizabeth MacRitchie, of
Boylston, Mass.
Mrs. MacRitchie immigrated from
Canada to the United States in 1953.
Later that year, she and her husband
settled in Westfield. She became a
naturalized citizen in 1973.
While residing in Canada, she
taught at the Pelham District High
School in Fenwick, Ontario. After
moving to Westfield, she taught
school in the Westfield Public
Schools.
She was an Anglican (Episcopalian) since infant baptism. After moving to Westfield, she was a parishioner
of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church. She
served a term on the church vestry.
Mrs. MacRitchie participated actively in the local food bank program. In particular, she organized
bread deliveries until two days before her death. She also volunteered
at Grace’s Kitchen at Grace Episcopal Church in Plainfield.
She had four lines of descent from
Mayflower passengers: two from Wil-
liam Bradford and one each from Isaac
Allerton and Richard Warren. She was
also a descendant of Robert Cushman,
who chartered the Mayflower.
She was also related to Charles
Lindbergh. The kidnapping of
Charles Lindbergh, Jr. occurred
when she was nine years old. She
was very concerned that she would
be the next victim, and she asked her
father to install window guards in
her bedroom.
After retiring from the Westfield
Public Schools, she and her husband
owned and operated Oval Antiques,
which specialized in railroad antiques. They also had time to travel
extensively in Great Britain and
Northern Europe.
Mr. and Mrs. MacRitchie established the Ian MacRitchie Memorial
Scholarship at Union County College
and the Ian MacRitchie Technology
Award at Roosevelt Middle School.
While a student at the University of
Toronto, she was a member of the
women’s hockey team. She also enjoyed recreational skating. She was
not a member of the women’s baseball team at the University of Toronto,
but she was occasionally called down
from the stands to participate.
She was a member of the New
Jersey Education Association and
later the New Jersey Retired Educators Association. She also belonged
to the College Women’s Club of
Westfield. She served as a den mother
in Cub Scout Pack 79 at Tamaques
School, and was active in the
Tamaques School Parent-Teacher
Organization. She participated in the
Grant School Talent Show. The
League of Women Voters admitted
her as a member, even before her
naturalization.
A memorial service was held on
August 17, 2013 in Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield. She arranged for her body to be donated
for medical research to Robert Wood
Johnson Medical School. Interment
of her ashes in the church garth will
be private.

Catherine Downer, 62, of Westfield
died on Sunday, October 19, 2014, at
Overlook Medical Center, Summit,
the place where she was born on
August 12, 1952. The Downer family
were early pioneers in the settling of
Westfield, N.J.
Cathy was the membership director of IEEE, a worldwide professional technology association, based
in Piscataway, N.J. A lifelong resident of Westfield, she attended
Westfield public schools, graduating
from Westfield High School, and later
Kean University, where she received
a Bachelor of Science degree.
She was the beloved daughter of
the late Arthur and Virginia Rogers
Downer, and dear sister of the late
Peggy Downer. Cathy is survived by
her loving daughter, Emma Lee
Downer, and her brother, Robert A.
Downer.
Cathy’s Life Celebration will be
held tomorrow, Friday, October 24,
from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Gray
Funeral Directors, 318 East Broad
Street, Westfield, where her funeral
service will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2014. Interment
will follow at Fairview Cemetery in
Westfield.

Mary Louise Fischer, 89, Known For
Her Hospitality, Cooking and Love
Mary Louise Fischer, 89, of Marco
Island, Fla. passed away on Thursday, October 16. She died as she had
lived — surrounded by loving friends
and family.
Mary Lou, née Isemann, married
Robert Humphreys in 1945. They
had two sons, Robert Jr. and Richard,
but their happiness was short lived
and she was widowed at 33. In 1965
she married Carl Fischer, a colonel in
the Army. Blessed with a daughter,
Cheryl, they lived in Paris before
settling in Westfield, N.J. There, the
Fischer home was known for its welcoming spirit. Mary Lou’s passion
for cooking had flourished in France
and no one could forget the towers of
shrimp and dozens of hors d’oeuvres
that graced her parties.
Always active, she played bridge,
joined the Gourmet Group, and hosted
as many as 50 for Easter every year.
In 2001, she and Carl retired to Marco
Island and pronounced it “heaven.”
She loved her new friends at the Mi-
rage and her condo was filled with
lively company, good food, pink cosmos and, always, family. Her boundless energy was infectious and even
the day before she passed she held
court at Avow hospice. The room was
alive with love and laughter as final
goodbyes were spoken. This Christmas will not be the same without the
famous tins of gourmet cookies she
baked for all who knew her.
Mary Lou is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Johnson, and husband,
Brian, and her sons, Robert and Richard Humphreys and their wives,
Patricia and Kate; her niece, Barbara
Schaefer, and husband, Jack, as well
as her seven beloved grandchildren
and 14 great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at
San Marco Catholic Church, 851 San
Marco Road, Marco Island, Fla., tomorrow, Friday, October 24, 2014, at
10 a.m.

Schedules Blood Drive
FANWOOD — The Fanwood Presbyterian Church will sponsor a Community Cares Blood Drive on Saturday, November 8, from 8 a.m. to 3
p.m. It will take place at the New
Jersey Blood Services Donor Center,
located at 2279 South Avenue, Scotch
Plains. Donors age 16 or older are
urgently needed.
One out of every three persons will
need blood or blood components at
some time during their lives.Yet fewer
than one in 10 persons eligible to give
blood ever do so. Donated blood has a
limited shelf life. It therefore is important to maintain an adequate supply.
Donors must satisfy weight criteria,
be in generally good health and have
a valid photo identification. Sixteenyear-olds must furnish a signed parental consent form and persons age 76 or
older must furnish medical clearance.
Individuals may schedule an appointment to donate blood for the
