COURSE BACKGROUND
Geologically, Indonesia occupies one of the most complicated areas on Earth. The archipelago is made
up of three major crustal plates and several micro-plates of both continental and oceanic origins. This
tectonic setting provides Indonesia with numerous sedimentary basins and inter-basin areas where
petroleum accumulations are either proven or possible.
Petroleum resources of Indonesia have been explored and produced for more than 140 years. Yet, the
Indonesia’s oil and gas potential and production are still important regionally. National and multinational companies are still venturing these resources. Exploration opportunities are still large in both
Western and Eastern Indonesia.
Indonesia may also be the most diverse country in the world with at least 50 proven and probably more
than 100 speculative petroleum systems. Controlled largely by the different geological regimes of
Western and Eastern Indonesia, the pattern of petroleum accumulations differs across the archipelago.
Understanding geological evolution and how various sedimentary basins developed, are keys to the
understanding of petroleum systems within the basins.
Within this five-day course, current knowledge on petroleum geology and petroleum systems of
Indonesia will be presented and discussed. The course materials are based on recent concepts and
technical progress within individual basins. Detailed discussions will be made for producing basins
seeking for their remaining potentials. New ideas on the possibilities of petroleum accumulation in
under-explored or frontier areas will be presented. Current statistics of petroleum exploration and
production in Indonesia will also be discussed.
The course will provide participants with tour of petroleum geology of Indonesia. After the course, the
participants will know: (1) regional tectonics, stratigraphy, petroleum systems, and recent status of
exploration and production of Indonesia, and (2) detailedpetroleum geology and petroleum systems of
most basins in Indonesia, their remaining potentials and how to explore them, as well as ideas for
under-explored or frontier basins. Specific problems from areas where participants are working in can
be discussed in this course. The course will benefit both junior and senior petroleum professionals.***

INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHY
Awang Harun Satyana is VP Management Representative of SKK Migas
(Government of Indonesia’s Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business)
for Pertamina EP. Besides his managerial duties, his daily activities also relate to
exploration technical matters, including: giving geological and geophysical
consultations to many companies in Indonesia as part of SKK Migas program, talking
in seminars, doing research and publishing papers, going to the field with many
groups for fieltrips, and teaching universities or professional courses.
Awang graduated from the Geology Department of the University of Padjadjaran, Bandung in 1989. He
worked for PERTAMINA from 1990-2002 assigned various positions as Exploration Geologist and
Regional Geologist. Since 2002, Awang joined BPMIGAS (later became SKK Migas in February 2013)
and has assigned various technical and managerial positions.
Awang has actively serviced international and national geological societies by contributing papers,
articles, invited talks, guest lectures and courses. There have been totally 318 publications (88 papers
for conferences, 55 articles for journals/others, 6 chapters for 6 books, 94 invited presentations, 42
guest lectures, and 33 course manuals). Several of his papers got awards as the best papers and
presentations. As appreciation for his great contribution and dedication to geosciences, “Lasut Award”
from IAGI and "HAGI Award" from HAGI were awarded to Awang in 2002 and 2008, respectively.
Awang is so far the only Indonesian geologist ever assigned by the AAPG (American Association of
PetroleumGeologists) to be the Associate Editor for the AAPG Bulletin (during 2006-2007).
Awang is a member of IAGI (Indonesian Association of Geologists), IPA (Indonesian Petroleum
Association), AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists), and HAGI (Indonesian
Association of Geophysicists).
Awang has taught this course since 2003. He updates the course contents every year to follow the
progress of geological concepts, petroleum systems and EP statistics for basins in Indonesia.
