President’s Message
Hello All, The weather is nippy in the morning these days….and Beautiful in the afternoons!
Ahhhhhh, just like we like it! Several awesome concerts coming up on our fall calendar including this
month’s feature, and one of our very favorite musical duos, Patchouli.
There is other news in our folk community. The bad news is that our hard working Vice-President,
Dwight Sullivan, has resigned his position with the Folk Club to have more time to pursue his own
musical endeavors. I, for one, know how dedicated one has to be to develop and sustain your own
career when you choose this crazy life of making music! And I know we all wish Dwight well on his
musical journey. The good news is that our very dedicated Festival Director, Eileen Kozloff, has
agreed to step into the role of V.P. until this fiscal term is over and she can see if serving in the
position of Vice-President will be manageable along with her festival directing responsibilities.
- 1-
So, I thank you sincerely, Dwight, for your service and dedication to the Sarasota Folk Club! And I
thank You, Eileen, for stepping in and making a smooth transition into the position of Vice-President.
See you all around the music!
Mindy Lou, Da Prez
Festival Report
We received over 100 applications from our Showcase artists! Once again, this will be a daunting
task for our selection committee as we comb through an amazing talent pool. We will be meeting
sometime in mid November and our committee will be prepared to announce the final results before
Thanksgiving! However, we can formally name one of our Showcase Artists, Mike Campbell, 2014
Sarasota Festival Winner of the Open Mic Contest. Congratulations again, Mike! Many thanks to all
who applied and support the SFF’s mission to keep folk music alive and well in our region.
Happy Halloween!
Eileen Kozloff, Director, Sarasota Folk Festival 2015
WSLR Radio 2014 fall membership drive Nov. 5th - 11th
Remember that WSLR is a non-commercial, non-profit community radio, supported totally by the
community, its listeners and its businesses. It takes no government funds, relying solely on the
spring and fall membership drives. WSLR features not only music not normally found on commercial
stations, but also talks, discussions and guests usually not found on commercial stations. And,
WSLR supports the local musicians of the greater Sarasota community, allowing them to reach an
audience with whom they might not normally have contact. Remember, too, that many musicians and
groups too numerous to mention have appeared live on air and/or in WSLR’s adjacent venue,
Fogartyville. And, as Amy Goodman of “Democracy Now” says often, “The airwaves are
YOURS…take them back and keep them.” WSLR is possibly the only way the community can do
this. Pledge by phone at 941-894-6469 or 941-954-8636, or go to www.wslr.org and pledge
securely online. And please select a “thank-you” gift. These gifts are provided by like-minded
members of our business community; selecting a gift is our way of thanking you for your support, and
if you select a gift certificate for one of our local businesses, upon redemption it tells that business
that you not only support WSLR and their interests, but that their certificate donation is well-spent.
Remember, too, that one does not have to wait for a specific show to be on air to donate to that show;
you can donate at any time, and specify to which show or shows you would like to give credit.

Host a House Concert. Are you interested in hosting a house concert for a local folk artist or a
touring performer? If you have room for 20-30 people and a bunch of friends/neighbors you can
invite, this is a fun thing to do. The Folk Club provides publicity for events hosted by Club members
and we can provide the names of local and touring folk performers. Contact Anne Bishop,
[email protected], for more info.

Entertainment Night. For ten years, a group of 12 friends has gotten together once a month for a
pitch-in dinner and an evening of entertainment provided by local and touring folk performers that
- 4-
they have hired. If this sounds like fun to you and you’d like to start your own Entertainment Night,
contact either Anne Bishop or Lu Winberg.

WSLR, 96.5 FM. Tune in to WSLR, 96.5 FM, our locally funded radio station www.wslr.org. You
will especially want to listen to programmers Ishmael Katz & James Hawkins, alternating on the 2hour folk show Sundays from 11am-1pm; and “From the Mountains and Beyond” with Tracy
Hostetler every Monday from 4-6pm. Wednesday evenings check out Gary Inganamort’s “New and
Blue Session” for bluegrass both old and new, from 7-9pm. Don't miss them. If you live outside the
WSLR broadcast area, please go to www.wslr.org and click on the radio “play” button at the top of
the page to stream the station. Call 941-954-8636 for the direct line to the programmer for
questions or requests. WSLR 96.5 accepts submissions for Public Service Announcements,
as long as the event is a benefit (no prices for admissions, donations, etc.). Send
announcements and artwork listing the event to [email protected] for approval. And remember: the
earlier they get it, the more they can be read!
