Strategies for writing your Essay: 1. Understand the demands of the question – Most statements and /or questions will contain key words telling you what you are expected to do. You MUST address this in your response. 2. Introduction – this establishes the tone of the essay and is where you need to be stating your “thesis”, basically you are expanding on the question. You are also leading the reader into the body of your essay. Avoid writing general information that conveys no important message. 3. Topic Sentences – Develop your paragraphs around certain points or Topic Sentences (e.g. Artists practice, use of colour, background influences, etc). These help to organize your essay and assist the reader moving through from point to point. The key aspect of a paragraph is usually contained within a single sentence. 4. Use connective words or phrases - these are used at the beginning of each paragraph and help the connection between them. They help the reader in moving from one point to another. E.g. meanwhile, therefore, however, similarly, in other words, likewise, consequently, etc. 5. Conclusions - always make sure it agrees with your initial idea and DON’T introduce any new information. Also make it a normal length paragraph, don’t just run out of ideas and leave it unresolved. If you write the essay (or essay plan) in plenty of time, give your teacher a look at it so they can give you some feedback before the actual assessment task date.
