Final Exam& Essay
We have read a selection of texts this semester and analyzed each for the
different elements contained within literature, things like:
Plot, Character, Setting, Point of View, Symbolism, Theme, and Style-Tone-Irony.
We also looked at each text through different lenses, such as Biographical,
Psychological, Historical, Marxist, New Historicist, Cultural Studies, Gender
Studies, Mythological, Reader-Response, and Deconstructionist.
For the final exam & essay, you will need to:
1. answer the following questions pertaining to one of the texts, and then
2. write an essay defending your answers (as they are the basis for your
analysis of the text). Use chapter 49 from the textbook to assist you.
The four texts to choose from are:




Fahrenheit 451
Summer
Saving Sourdi
Mistaken Identity
The answers to the questions AND the essay are due by Friday, May 1st, at 11:59
pm. You can email me your responses. If you are NOT able to email me, you
must let me know when 24 hours of this posting (by 4/24/15 at 11:59 pm). If that
is the case, you will have a completely different assignment and will come to class
on May 5th to write it in person. If you have not informed me within that 24 hour
window, I will assume you are emailing me the assignment. If I do not receive
your work by the May 1 deadline, you will not receive credit for the final

First, answer these questions relating to your selected text. Then write the essay.
You will need to research to find some of the answers and information you need.
You will need to turn in BOTH the answers AND the essay.
1. Biographical - How are facts about the writer’s life relevant to your understanding of
your selected text? Explain.
2. Biographical - Are characters and incidents in your selected text versions of the writer’s
own experiences? Are they treated factually or imaginatively? Explain.
3. Psychological How does your selected text reflect the author’s personal
psychology? Explain.
4. Historical How does your selected text reflect the period in which it is
written? Explain
5. Historical How important is the historical context to interpreting your
selected text? Explain.
6. Cultural Studies What does your selected text reveal about the cultural behavior
contemporary to it? Explain.
7. Cultural Studies How do your own cultural assumptions/views affect your reading
of your selected text and the culture contemporary to it? Explain.
8. Gender Studies How are the lives of men and women portrayed in your selected
text? Do men and women in your selected text accept or reject these roles? Explain.
9. Mythological - How does the story resemble other stories in plot, character, setting, or
use of symbols? Explain.
10. Reader-Response - How do you respond to your selected text? Explain.
11. Reader-Response - How do your own experiences and expectations affect your
reading and interpretation? Explain.
12. Reader-Response - What is your selected text’s intended audience? To what extent
are you similar to or different from that audience? Explain.
