Dear Friends:
Since the inception of the AANA Foundation in 1981,
we have experienced unprecedented change in healthcare. The steady evolution of healthcare has impacted
nurse anesthesia with an emphasis on cost and quality.
The AANA Foundation has been responsive to shifts in
healthcare by supporting the education and research
endeavors that advance nurse anesthetists. We could
not have done it without you – the AANA members,
donors and friends who believe in the importance of our
mission – advancing the science of anesthesia through
education and research.
Together, we partner and focus on nurse anesthesia
education that enhances both individual and collective
knowledge and research that validates quality and cost
effective care through scientific evidence and data.

•Awarded 60 scholarships, 14 fellowships, 3 research
grants, displayed over 135 poster presentations, and
conducted workshops that educated over 100 CRNAs
and students.
•Assembled a Closed Claim Research Team, consisting of 17 researchers, who provided their expertise in
analyzing poor outcomes and developing strategies to
improve quality care and patient safety.
•Honored four CRNAs – Ladan Eshkevari, Gina Mason,
Kathleen Thibeault and Erin Cushing – for their efforts
in the areas of research, philanthropy, advocacy and
volunteerism.
•Funded the Best Anesthesia Model study which is now
complete and has been submitted for publication.
•Supporting two studies regarding the scope of practice
and CRNAs.
Our focus now is on next year – we need your support
to continue to fund scholarships, fellowships, research
grants, poster presentation, awards, and workshops.
There is a heightened push to fund two studies in health
services research regarding CRNA scope of practice.

American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Foundation
The AANA Foundation was established in 1981 as a charitable organization to support the AANA membership. The AANA
is the professional association for nearly 47,000 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and Student Registered
Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) nationwide. CRNAs are anesthesia professionals who safely administer more than 34 million
anesthetics to patients each year in the United States and are the primary providers of anesthesia care in rural America.

Foundation raises funds and invests in projects that directly support the AANA Foundation and AANA priorities.

Overview of the Year’s Successes
The AANA Foundation raises the funds needed to focus on initiatives that meet its research and education mission,
ensure efficiency, and provide the nurse anesthesia community with the necessary resources for furthering the
profession. Due to the generosity of the Foundation’s donors, the following are major strategic goals accomplished this
fiscal year:
Supported more than 217 CRNAs and students
Educated more than 100 CRNAs and students at Foundation-supported workshops
Funded two new health services research studies focused on CRNA scope of practice and quality to assist in
defining health policy issues around nurse anesthesia
Funded and coordinated a malpractice closed-claim study by a team of CRNA researchers to identify potentially
avoidable anesthesia adverse events and provide mitigation strategies to improve anesthesia quality and patient safety

The Foundation provides financial support to CRNAs and SRNAs through a variety of
initiatives and events in addition to offering workshops attended by hundreds of
individuals. Over the course of its history, the Foundation has awarded more than
$3.18 million to more than 2,800 individuals as detailed below.

AWARDS
John F. Garde Researcher of the Year
Ladan Eshkevari, CRNA, PhD, LAc
The Researcher of the Year Award is
named in memory of John F. Garde, a previous Foundation Trustee, AANA Executive
Director and charter member of the AANA
Foundation. John was instrumental in the
creation of the Foundation and realized the
importance of supporting nurse anesthesia
long into the future. This award recognizes
an individual who has made a significant
contribution to the practice of anesthesia through research.
The AANA Foundation presents the prestigious 2014 John
F. Garde Researcher of the Year Award to Ladan Eshkevari,
CRNA, PhD, LAc. Eshkevari is a practicing nurse anesthetist, educator, and creative and diligent scientist. Her
research on the interaction among pain, acupuncture, and
peripheral markers of stress is groundbreaking, and she
actively disseminates this information in published articles
in peer reviewed journals, poster presentations at national
conferences, and at national and international speaking
engagements. In addition, her work has been highlighted
in popular news outlets such as National Geographic and
TIME magazine. Eshkevari has been a faculty member at
Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Care
Studies for 17 years and provides active service to education, professional, and practice organizations where she is a
highly respected team player who brings a wealth of clinical
and basic science research.
The recipient of the 2014 Rita L. LeBlanc Philanthropist of
the Year Award is Col. Gina L. Mason, CRNA, U.S. Army
Reserve, (Ret.). Mason is a strong advocate for the nurse
anesthesia profession, a patriot who served her country, a
visionary who teamed with others to build a much-needed
local animal shelter, and a generous Foundation supporter.
As an anesthetist in the United States Army she was honored to take care of the soldiers who protect our freedom.
As an active member of the Wisconsin Association of Nurse
Anesthetists, including State President, she spent time
annually lobbying legislators for practice rights. A recent
accomplishment includes her work with a small group of
individuals to raise funds and open Chasing Daylight Animal
Shelter which has taken in and found homes for over 1,000
animals. Mason is a generous and dedicated role model.
Janice Drake CRNA Humanitarian Award
Erin M. Cushing, CRNA, MS
The Janice Drake CRNA Humanitarian
Award is presented to a CRNA who
volunteers and provides anesthesia,
education and training in needy areas
of the United States and overseas. The
winner of the 2014 Janice Drake CRNA
Humanitarian award is Erin M. Cushing,
CRNA, MS. Cushing traveled to Rwanda
to work with The International Organization
for Women and Development (IOWD) to develop a
sustainable program of care for women suffering the
aftermath of obstetric trauma. She had the opportunity
to experience full scope of anesthesia practice and to use
agents and techniques that are not common in the U.S. such
as tetracaine spinals, halothane, and oxygen extractors.
Advocate of the Year
Kathleen Thibeault, CRNA, MSN
The Advocate of the Year Award is presented to an AANA Foundation Advocate
for outstanding commitment to the nurse
anesthesia profession through individually
supporting the AANA Foundation and
encouraging others to do the same. The
2014 Advocate of the Year is Kathleen
Thibeault, CRNA, MSN. Thibeault is the
Florida State Advocate and she excels at
reaching out to fellow CRNAs and students to promote the
AANA Foundation. At Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetist meetings she can be found at the Foundation booth
where she educates members, holds fundraisers, awards
prizes, and promotes upcoming events. Thibeault also works
with state researchers to display and discuss their research
at state meetings which is valuable to both CRNAs and
students. Thibeault’s positive energy and organized efforts
generate much excitement and connect members with the
Foundation and its mission.
Rita L. LeBlanc Philanthropist of the Year

The Rita L. LeBlanc Philanthropist of the
Year Award represents the spirit of Ms.
LeBlanc and is presented to an individual
who has gone beyond the call of duty as
a supporter of the AANA Foundation and
other well-deserving organizations. The
recipient of this award demonstrates a
strong philanthropic spirit and charitable
actions which motivate others to give of themselves.
RESEARCH
INITIATIVES
WORKSHOPS
Advocate Workshop
A State Advocate workshop was held at the Fall
Leadership Academy in Miami, Florida. Attendees
at this interactive workshop learned about opportunities offered by the AANA Foundation and
increased their competency and ability to promote
Foundation programs at the local level.
Research Forum
A Research Forum titled “Developing the Capstone
Process: Where to Begin” was held at the
Assembly of School Faculty meeting in San Diego,
California. The Grant Writing Workshop was held
at the Assembly of School Faculty. Over 90 individuals attended the dynamic workshop.
Program Director’s Presentation
A Program Director’s luncheon program was held
at the Assembly of School Faculty meeting in San
Diego, California. Over 65 individuals were in
attendance for this informative presentation
detailing Foundation programs available and
mechanisms to apply for funding.
FELLOWSHIPS
The Fellowship program financially supports CRNAs earning doctoral degrees
while conducting research to advance
nurse anesthesia. This year, fourteen
prestigious Fellowships were awarded

Malpractice Closed
Claim Research Team
The AANA Foundation’s malpractice closed
claims analysis is a scientific study of
adverse anesthetic events where a CRNA
potentially contributed to a negative outcome.
Between July 2013 and March 2014, seventeen
closed claim research reviewers convened
at AANA offices and analyzed claims using their
clinical and professional expertise. Claims
consisted of narratives, depositions, and claim
manager evaluations. The goal is to provide
mitigation strategies to improve quality care
and patient safety.

president, served as treasurer for
15 years, AANA Journal editor for
12 years, Director of the Lakeside
School of Anesthesia from 19341946, and received the AANA
Award of Appreciation in 1950

Society was established to honor
