2ND KARL.COM EDITION SPRING/SUMMER 2015 #KARLDAILY THE ILLUSTRATED LIFE OF KARL EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW! by Alfons Kaiser Karl Lagerfeld’s mornings are sacred. He spends the early hours at the drawing board. The designer sketches portraits of Choupette, caricatures for newspapers or fashion sketches for Fendi, Chanel and the Karl Lagerfeld brand. Karl Lagerfeld’s drawing skills made his life easier even as a child. A fact that he illustrates with a lovely story from his youth. He often missed school when his parents were away. Firstly, he was a gifted pupil and already knew most of what there was to learn anyway. Secondly, it was a long way to go: nearly six kilometres there and six kilometres back home. So the young Karl put his artistic talents to good use: “I wrote my absence notes myself. I could copy my mother’s handwriting well.” Anyone capable of this kind of artistic deception at an early age is bound to spend his entire life dedicated to art. And this is exactly what happened: when young Karl grew up, he made good use of his ready comprehension, good eye and polished artistic skills. The drawings he has been producing on one of his four large drawing boards every morning over the decades feature countless versions of his take on the world and fashion. He started out young, setting up a studio in the attic of his parents’ house in Bad Bramstedt. “I had no idea you could have a career in fashion, there was no such thing in those days.” His ambition was therefore to become a portrait painter or costume designer for theatre. In fact, he ended up doing both – for the Burgtheater in Vienna and La Scala in Milan among others. Paper and drawing materials, both scarce in Germany at the time... continued on page 20 SECRETS OF THE SUPERMODELS SEE PAGE 5 FOR THE EXCLUSIVE SCOOP KOLOR IS THE NEW BLACK! Stealing the spotlight from a rival in an unplanned musical assault, this famed songstress left fans star-struck as they witnessed her belt out a medley of hits while clasping limitededition 70s Bucket bag. Security kicked her to the curb, but not before her striking arm candy stole the show! THROWING SHADE They found fame playing best friends in the biggest chick-flick of the summer, but now their private feud has gone public! Spotted at a buzzing LA brunch spot this weekend, the pair threw each other shade, snubbing each other and hiding behind their chic KL862 chain link sunglasses. CAUGHT RED-HANDED! This starlet’s penchant for five-fingerdiscounts has seen her go from jailbait to jailbird! Tongues have been wagging following the up-and-comer’s arrest in a Beverly Hills department store, where she unsuccessfully tried to snatch sought-after item of the season, the K/ Kuilted drawstring bag. Publicity stunt or fashionable rebel with(out) a cause? As instances of rainbow sightings increase, scientists are searching for new methods to combat the mystery surrounding what actually exists at the arc’s end. Among the research effort is a team of global scientists currently studying the light spectrum phenomena, finding thousands of mutations making them even harder to pin down. In light of new evidence, experts are challenging the long-held “pot of gold” theory. Some are even speculating that technicolour K/Kuilted crossbody bags are a probable outcome! GREEN-EYED MONSTER ATTACKS! SHE’S NO SHRINKING VIOLET IN THE NUDE She may have been ditched by the most bankable Hollywood star in the world, but this A-list actress just got her sweet revenge! Hitting the red carpet with a scorching mystery hunk on one arm and gotta-have-it indigo K/Shopper tote on the other, she squashed rumours she’s still hung up on her love-rat ex-lover, while making a killer fashion statement. THE RAINBOW CONNECTION Caught skinny-dipping in St. Tropez, the only thing this cover-girl had to protect her modesty was her K/Klassik nude shoulderbag! It seems the model’s belongings were swiped from the beach in broad daylight, forcing her to storm off in a huff – in the buff. Stunned onlookers captured all the action on social media proving that what happens in St. Tropez doesn’t always stay in St. Tropez! SINGING THE BLUES For such a beauty, this supermodel sure has a downright ugly side! The leggy brunette literally turned green with envy while at last night’s charity auction, when a known-rival outbid her on the latest emerald-hued K/Charms shoulder bag. Character flaws aside, no one can dispute her flawless fashion sense. Fashion muse Choupette Lagerfeld has recently taken the stage at a famed Parisian jazz club. Wowing crowds with husky vocals and slinky sex-kitten getup, Choupette proved she’s a feline of many talents – not the least of which is her on-point fashion panache. Donning a Chambray tuxedo jacket with contrast leather lapels, designed by the maestro Karl Lagerfeld himself, Madamoiselle Choupette was well and truly singin’ the blues – in an ensemble to match! SELFIE ADDICTION Suffering from major selfie overdose, this star-in-the-making has checked herself into rehab following the meteoric rise and fall of her instagram success. It seems not even her avid fans are “liking” her narcissistic tendencies, currently peaking at a rate of over 100 selfies a day. Paparazzi snaps of the star reportedly taking selfies with her Karl iPhone case have sparked a worldwide trend – selfies may be out, but stylish phone cases are on the up and up. 5 THE KARL DAILY SPRING/SUMMER 2015 SECRETS OF THE SUPERMODELS Supermodel Exposé: Secrets of the World’s Most Beautiful Faces Revealed! Stars of Karl Lagerfeld’s latest colour-tastic campaign tell all. Jet-setting model-of-themoment Kendall Jenner’s shocking revelation,“I’m a homebody!” Siberian siren Sasha Luss divulges her obsession with latex and leather. Plus Shanghai vixen Ming Xi’s need-to-know beauty tips that you have to read to believe. The Karl Daily gives you the inside scoop on sought-after supermodels Kendall Jenner, Sasha Luss and Ming Xi as they reveal their beauty tips, secret obsessions and fashion faux-pas. KENDALL JENNER The most talked-about new face in fashion, Kendall Jenner has more than a few unexpected secrets up her sleeve – and the Karl Daily is dishing the goss! Hard to believe, but even this stylish model confesses to making major fashion faux pas in the past, including, she says,“Bright coloured patterned leggings… I hope no pictures exist!” These days, Kendall’s been rocking bold hues with aplomb – just look at her eye-popping Karl Lagerfeld ultra-colour campaign! Alongside a personal philosophy to “dream big,” Kendall lives by sage advice from her father to,“Be true to yourself, be your own person, and be caring to others as well.” Her secret beauty tip? “Always wear sunscreen, and lip-gloss makes a difference.” Colour can reveal a lot about a person (as you can discover on page 12). Kendall’s tells us her hue is blue,“It makes me feel calm,” she says,“that’s why I love the ocean.”The world at her fingertips, this high-fashion star is constantly on the go. But no matter how many cities she visits, for Kendall, there’s no place like home. “Los Angeles, Los Angeles. I love NY and Paris, but my heart will always be in Los Angeles,” she says. “Even though I travel a lot, I’m really a homebody.” KARL.COM #KARLLAGERFELD PHOTO : KARL LAGERFELD SASHA LUSS She may be a platinum bombshell now but Siberian siren Sasha Luss was once a tomboy with a penchant for leather! “When I was a kid most of my friends were boys, so I grew up wanting to be a superhero,” she reveals. “Having special powers and dressing in latex and leather – what could be cooler?” Like fashion’s very own superhero Karl Lagerfeld, Sasha Luss is a self-described bookworm. She divulges to The Karl Daily, “I have so many books I can’t live without, but if I had to pick one it would be Winnie the Pooh. This little bear is a pure optimist, and teaches you how to really enjoy life!” If not a model, the beauty says she would have been a “writer or actress or fireman. Life is so unpredictable, you never know what is waiting around the corner.”While she may have many talents, this fashion star knows her limits:“I can say for sure I couldn’t be a singer. When I was little, my dad used to pay me not to sing – I’m that bad!” Known for her daring style, Sasha isn’t afraid to take risks,“Style is a reflection of your personality, and you shouldn’t hide it,” she says.“I don’t like boring clothing, that’s for sure. If you wear something just because society tells you to, that’s the real faux-pas!” Sasha’s secret to always being the belle of the ball? “I never leave home without my sunglasses, a drop of my favourite perfume and a smile.” MING XI For some tourists it’s key rings, and for others refrigerator magnets, some even go for t-shirt, but in a risqué twist, Shanghai-born knockout Ming Xi collects rather more compelling souvenirs.“I love to collect underwear,” the ravenhaired supermodel enthuses,“from every city I visit.”With her hectic modeling schedule, that adds up to one well-stocked underwear drawer! As for beauty tips, Ming keeps it simple: Mascara is her daily go-to, and as for a skin routine,“One face mask a day keeps the wrinkles away.” Just like her self-assigned spirit animal, the cat, Ming has a healthy apetite for the finer things.“I eat a lot,” she says,“my favourite foods are pork belly and foie gras.” A city girl through-and-through, this Chinese-born and New York-based knockout proves she remains unfazed by the bright lights. In an unexpected turn, Ming tells us,“my dream is to live on a small island in the middle of the Pacific where no one can reach me by phone – only by ship!” BAPTISTE GIABICONI Longtime face of Karl Lagerfeld, male supermodel Baptiste Giabiconi, may be a professional jetsetter, but he relishes his well-deserved downtime.“On Sunday’s I love to stay in bed until 5pm,” he divulges,“listening to music or catching up on television shows!” Baptiste is a man who knows what he likes he’s very particular about colour, his favourite being burgundy: he explains,“it soothes me with its warmth.” In a surprise twist, Baptiste reveals his hidden talent is,“cutting the lawn super well” although he admits to having only performed this once, and that his spirit animals are “the owl and the cheetah”. The Corsican-born heartthrob, who now lives between Paris and St.Victoret, has one very simple beauty tip: treat yourself to face masks regularly to keep skin from looking tired. And his personal philosophy, exclusively disclosed to The Karl Daily is to,“enjoy every second and never forget where you came from.” 6 SPRING/SUMMER 2015 THE KARL DAILY THE KARL DAILY SPRING/SUMMER 2015 MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE Behind the Seams Drawback the curtains on the colourful world of Karl Lagerfeld. Bottles containing a mysterious perfume have washed up along the southern coast of France, causing an overnight sensation. According to local authorities, the elusive men’s and women’s eau de parfum, known as Paradise Bay, was hand-crafted on a desert island, the whereabouts of which remain unknown. So far dozens of bottles have washed ashore all containing SOS messages from, reports say, “shipwrecked castaways”. Rough coordinates are being determined via analysis of the limited-edition perfume’s ingredients, describing the scents as, “bursting with brightness and freshness. Lychee and pineapple add sparkle to notes of velvety peach, rose and magnolia alongside vanilla, musk and sandalwood for women. For men, the scent is woody, enlivened by bergamot, violet leaves, green mint, apple and sharp berries.” A full rescue mission is expected to be underway in coming weeks, with the sought-after perfume currently being mass-produced to meet public demand. Karl Lagerfeld’s latest perfume Paradise Bay is available in March from selected stores. Get an exclusive sneak peek at Karl Lagerfeld’s latest campaign shoot, starring supermodels-of-themoment Kendall Jenner, Ming Xi, Sasha Luss and Baptiste. As the man himself snaps all the action on set, watch Team Karl rock the season’s brightest, boldest colours and give a little style inspiration to boot. WHAT’S IN MY BAG? Style icon in-the-making, Barbara Palvin, is the face of Karl Lagerfeld’s muchanticipated new scent, Private Klub. Known for her perfect pout and luscious brunette locks, this fashion muse knows her way around an it-bag. Here she tells The Karl Daily what kind of bag she’d be, and what she’d never leave home without. What do you always carry in your bag? Phone, headset, make-up, wallet, pain killer, sunglasses and my keys. What’s the most unexpected thing you keep in your bag? When I travel, I always have tea filters just in case I can’t find good tea. I also always have an extra pair of underwear! What do you look for when choosing a new bag? A bag needs to be your best friend, so I need it to be versatile. K/Kuilted drawstring bag and matching purse. KL862 chain link sunglasses. If you were a bag, what style would you be? I can’t wait to wear them,” reveals Tiffany Cooper. “I’m really into pop and fun clothes and accessories. I feel so lucky that I was invited by Karl Lagerfeld and his team to build this collection together!” Tiffany Cooper is also currently writing and illustrating a comic book all about the legendary designer himself, entitled Karl’s Secrets. “It will tell the story of his life, from childhood through today, with a humorous point of view,” explains Cooper. It will focus on Lagerfeld’s lifestyle and personality, outlining how and where he grew up, unique moments, including his bodybuilding phase in the 70s and drastic diet in the 90s, personal philosophy – and fun facts about Choupette. “I find Karl fascinating and I feel very close to a lot of things he says. He is a hard worker and wishes the days could last 48 hours. He loves to be alone to recharge his batteries. He knows how to make fun of himself and reinvent himself all the time. He is truly inspiring!” 7 8 SPRING/SUMMER 2015 THE KARL DAILY THE KARL DAILY SPRING/SUMMER 2015 KARL BY NUMBERS 7 25+ 21 9 Hours of sleep a night for Karl. “If I go to bed at two, I wake up at nine. The boy had high standards. On one occasion, when he asked his father to bring him paper from Hamburg, his father said: “If you haven’t got enough, just draw on the back.” Karl refused: “I shall never draw on the back for as long as I live.” And he never has to this day. Yet another childhood anecdote reveals his creative sensibility: One day, the boy discovered a copy of the picture Die Tafelrunde (The Dinner Table) by Adolf Menzel in a gallery in Hamburg. Fascinated by the white wigs at the court and castle of Sanssouci, he said to his mother: “That’s the way life should be,” and asked for the picture for Christmas. However, because it was a very expensive gift for a child, his parents gave him a copy of Menzel’s Flötenkonzert (Flute Concerto) instead. The boy pulled such a long face that in the end his parents asked the gallery for the right picture. He still keeps it today despite not having kept very many mementoes from his childhood. In those days, he kept the collected volumes of the satirical magazine Simplicissmus in the attic. It was here that he discovered a world far away from the rural isolation of Schleswig-Holstein. First published in 1896, Simplicissmus influenced not only his witty humour, but also his aesthetic. No wonder Lagerfeld collects German designs from 1905 to 1915. As he says, fashion design in the years before the First World War was “almost like Pop Art, inherently ‘German’, as yet not influenced by the French or anyone else.” He also found the sarcastic drawings of SPRING/SUMMER 2015 THE KARL DAILY Simplicissmus politically important. The caricatures he draws for the Frankfurter Allgemeine and other newspapers and magazines are highly critical of hollow political rituals, the trickery of the ruling elite and the crude abuse of power. Yet Lagerfeld does not see this type of critical art as very important: “I’m not interested in provocation. It’s just for my amusement. But you still have to put your finger on the wound sometimes.” Every morning is spent drawing. “I work from home,” says Lagerfeld with a touch of irony. “My apartment is not so much a home as a studio.” His ideas come before sleep or upon waking, “I call them electronic flashes,” he says. “In the morning, I put the ideas I have at night down on paper right away. I also keep a sketch pad by my bed. Otherwise you forget it all when you fall asleep again.” He likes to keep his morning routine simple. “I just want to be alone with Choupette, to draw in peace, without having to keep an eye on the time. I arrange all my meetings for afternoons.” You have to imagine drawing fashion sketches, portraits of Choupette, or caricatures as a form of meditation: “To me drawing is like breathing; I don’t give it a further thought. I’ve never done anything else in my entire life.” For him, these are the best hours of the day, though not everything turns out to be a masterpiece. “I throw a lot away,” he says. “The most important items in my home are the waste paper baskets.” And it’s true: the waste paper baskets in his offices and studios hold literally tons of paper. FRONT ROW FASHIONISTAS His sketches reveal a fashion designer who thinks in the abstract, but acts in the real world. “I’m not a couturier who drapes people in clothes. I visualise a concept and can create a 3D drawing out of it on paper, including all the technical details.” He doesn’t rely on a computer to do it for him. Everything has to be done by hand. “This means that when I see the sketch made in fabric, I don’t have to make many changes.” The system seems to work: the fashion house Fendi alone has stored around 50,000 drawings by its head designer, dating back half a century. It must be an almost god-like feeling: you have an idea, put it down on paper and then it becomes a reality. “It still amazes me each time it happens, even today.” He draws his sketches quickly. Then hundreds of hands work in his studios to make his visions a reality. Illustration is rather like the little sister of art. But Lagerfeld doesn’t wish to be called an artist: “I often find that pretentious.” This is why he has no ambitions to paint large pictures in oils either. Although his school in Bad Bramstedt encouraged him to draw, it put him off painting. Karl’s drawing teacher then, a very nice man who also painted landscapes, said to his young pupil: “You’re good at drawing people, but you’ll never become a good landscape painter.” To which Karl is said to have retorted smartly: “I wouldn’t want to, if it meant painting pictures like yours.” This is how the world lost a landscape painter, but gained a brilliant designer.
