Your sacrifice will never be forgotten
Every day Canadians have so much to be thankful for. Our lives are shaped by the peace and freedoms our
Veterans have provided for us. Yet every day we lose more of these heroes that provided all of this for us. Our
pledge to these men and women who gave so much and never asked for anything in return, is to never forget
and to always remember. It is the least we can do.
To all those who have served and continue to serve and protect us, thank you.

The New Face of War.
Erwin Rommel, a German field marshal of ww2 coined a phrase, “Know your enemy”.
We are living today, in a time when the face of the enemy has changed. Today we battle against skewed ideologies, cultic extremists, terrorist organizations, who by the way, in some instances, have cells among our own people, Jehadists, Boka Haran, Taliban, Alqada and the scourge that is Isis.
A very real and present danger as we have seen in the recent slayings of two of our service personnel, Corporal Nathan
Cirillo and Warrant officer Patrice Vincent, is the presence of individuals who for some reason, subscribe to these
twisted ideologies and commit atrocities in our very midst. These individuals act sometimes under the influence and
instruction of the above named factions and sometimes out of their own volition.
This enemy, in whatever form it takes cannot and will not be allowed to win. Canadians have been drawn closer together across the Dominion and stand resolute in support of our Democratic process, the fundamental rights and freedoms which constitute our life style and the overwhelming support of all who have or do or will wear a uniform be it:
service men and women, first responders be they EMO, Police, Fire Ambulance and whoever they might be and may I
add tribute to all the men and women and young cadets who are serving as honour guards today. May God in his love
and mercy stand with us.
My question for us today is two-fold: What does it mean for us to be Canadian? And, how do we FEEL today about
being Canadian?

PRESIDENT'S REPORT
October, a month with the holiday of Thanksgiving which is supposed to be a time to give thanks for
who we have in our lives and the wonderful bounty that the earth provides. The changing of the leaves
on the trees reminds us that nothing stays the same and we must adapt to the changes that life brings.
Some changes we may not like but have to accept, like our health, as we age certain things we cannot
do or must slow down. I am thankful that our Branch and Ladies Auxiliary now have some new and
younger members coming in, they have a fresh look and new ideas, and we must let them try these
ideas out to keep them interested in our Legion. It's not an easy thing giving up the reigns but we must
learn to loosen the hold.
Our Executive Members are all VOLUNTEERS please respect their time when they are in the branch,
for some social time, ask if they could make time to speak to you, don't corral them into a corner. I am
in the branch 6 days out of 7, and always willing to speak to the members, I only ask that you are respectful to all, and if it is a private matter we should take it upstairs when possible,
A new draw has been set up on the bar and will be drawn on November 11th at the dinner, tickets for
the Draw and Dinner are at the Bar. I added the new 1914 Wine that was produced this year for the
100 Anniversary of WW1. Some members that were in the Branch on Thursday October 23 had the
opportunity to taste this wine from Diamond Wineries of Niagara, it is now available in the LCBO and
50 cents from each bottle sold goes to Veteran's Programs.
Our Branch Inspection took place in October and although we rated good there was some concerns
with our expenses. Old building, old houses, lots of repairs and the Bar Sales were down over the summer months.
Ladies Night will be November 18th and tickets will be available at the bar, we are asking anyone that
would like to donate those extra toothbrushes, toothpaste, or any personal hygiene products for men
and women to bring them to the branch to my attention.
Please remember your obligation to the Legion to participate in the Poppy Campaign, one hour per
year is not much to ask.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT
I am not too sure of what to say to convince members to come forward early to pay their dues. They have to
be paid at some point in time and to me sooner is better than later. Each and every year all members know
that dues will have to be paid in order to stay as members but most choose to pay later. Why, I do not have
that answer.
During the first three months of the Early Bird you have the chance to win a free years membership but that
does not seem to impress most members, again why, I do not know.
Anyway our first winner of the September Early Bird was Jason K, CALVERLY. He will be duly notified and
congratulations from the Branch in your early payment.
We did slightly exceed Early Bird numbers this year over last year so that was a good sign. October has
slowed down and at present we are down on last years numbers but we still have a few days left to go. Sorry
to keep repeating myself but lets get your dues paid and I will find something else to write about.
As previously stated your Dues are $55.00 up to and including January 31st, 2015. However paying early
makes it better for me.
1ST VICE PRESIDENTS REPORT.
I have not been tasked with much this past month but I have been busy with the housing portfolio.
I did attend the Change of Command of the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, 88 Cobourg on October 1st.
Captain G. Sudano, Commanding Officer, has now been replaced by Captain J. Rodriguez.
The change over ceremony was quite impressive and the cadets they have are unbelievable. We need a lot
more programmes like this one in Cobourg to task our youth.
I also attended the Zone Conference on Sunday October 5th in Grafton.

POPPY CAMPAIGN UPDATE
NOVEMBER 2014
“Royal Canadian Legion Branch 133 reminds you that on November 11, Canadians
across our land will bow their heads in silent praise for our courageous veterans. With
this act we thank them and thank those serving in our armed forces today.” These are
the opening words of a Remembrance Day message that will be promoted on the
Breeze 107.9 for one week leading up to Remembrance Day.
The official start date of this year’s campaign is October 31st. Poppy boxes will be going
out to locations throughout Cobourg; poppies will be delivered to schools and care facilities. Our driver volunteers will deliver these boxes on the 31st, after 10 a.m.
The sign up boards for tagging on the 6th 7th and 8th still have some bare spots. Please
put your name down. The shifts are only one hour each. Bundle up and get out there.
Let’s make this a successful campaign.
Tickets for the Armistice Dinner are $12 and available at the bar. WW2 Korea and Afghanistan veterans are our guests and do not pay.

Gord Dingwell, is still a patient at Sunnybrook Toronto. I have chatted with him and he seems to be
in pretty good spirits. He still has a long way to go but I told him we’d all say a prayer for him.
Dorothy Post, is still a patient at N.H.H. Room 1336. She ’d love a visit.
Art Brace had a visit to NHH bu t is back in the fold again
John Harper and Connie Yakeling have both been ill at hom e.

Cobourg Legion Pipes and Drums
November Report
Forget about furry caterpillars or the Farmer’s Almanac for predictions about the weather for the
upcoming winter season. We have a much more reliable source of information about weather patterns
and when it will be coldest for the next couple of months. This indicator is foolproof, practical and
precise. It will tell you the coldest days, even the coldest hours, of the next two months and without
fail when the winds will be highest, the snow deepest and the temperatures lowest. It is, of course, the
band’s Santa Claus Parade schedule for November and December, which has recently been finalize.
More in a minute.
We will begin the month with our presence at the cenotaph service in Alderville, held this year on
Sunday, November 9. We will also be present to parade from the Legion to the Cobourg cenotaph on
November 11, with members of the Legion, in recognition and remembrance of our veterans and their
contributions to our lives. It is a duty that we hold to be sacrosanct, and one which largely defines our
being. Band members will then visit four area schools, to attend their Remembrance Day services and
contribute to the experience for many area students and teachers. This year those schools are
Baltimore Public School, Terry Fox Public School in Cobourg and Port Hope’s Hawkins Public School/
Port Hope High School. These visits are always well received and are important to band members
because of the significance of the message delivered and the responses of the audiences. It is a very
busy day but a very worthwhile day.
The first very cold day of the above-mentioned Santa Claus Season will strike, without doubt,
November 15, at precisely 10:30am, when the CLP&D musters and moves off in the Bowmanville
Christmas Parade. That will be followed by a succession of Santa Claus seasonal weather days on
November 16, in Cobourg (2pm), and later that day in Newcastle at 5:30pm. Things will warm up for
awhile, then get cold again on November 22, exactly at 7:30pm, when we parade for the folks in
Colborne, on November 29, at 2:00pm, when we visit Frankford, on November 30 at 4:30pm, again,
in Peterborough on December 6, 6:00pm, and finally, on December 7, when we go to Courtice for a
noon parade. After all of that, the weather will doubtless turn balmy, until the St. Patrick’s Day parade
in March!
Why, you might reasonably ask, do we subject ourselves to what some call ”extreme piping”? These
parades are the single most important way in which we are able to raise revenue for our many and
varied band-related costs. These have, in the past, been primarily uniform related, but for the summer
of 2015 CLP&D East Coast Tour we must raise even more money. Band members are working
tirelessly to bring in revenue that will offset the cost of the trip, and not even winter weather will deter
us from our goal. In a future Missile Report, we will share the agenda of the 11 days in July. In the
meantime, we continue to work our way to Prince Edward Island.
