Medicine Wheel Teachings
Infusing Aboriginal Content into
Elementary Classrooms
Although each Nation has its own way of life and unique forms of
knowledge, each one of these nations recognizes a circle of life often
referred to as the Medicine Wheel. The symbol, which can vary by
Nation, usually contains a circle and four cardinal points that
represent the four directions – east, west, north and south. The
Medicine Wheel can be used to integrate First Nations, Metis, and
Inuit perspectives across the curriculum, from art to science.
This workshop will explore different methods and lesson plans using
the Medicine Wheel as a way to teach Aboriginal ways of knowing.
After a discussion of appropriate ways to raise the sacred teachings in
class, the workshop will lead participants through a series of activities
based on this significant Aboriginal symbol. Online and print
resources will demonstrate available resources for Occasional
Teachers and highlight areas for further learning.

2014-2015 Days of Significance Calendar. Participants will receive
presentation handouts and resources.
