Applicants (including members of Alumni Associations) with confirmed registration who fail to turn up may have a lower priority in the registration for future faculty lectures. By registering for the lecture, it is understood that you have agreed to the following terms and conditions: 1) Please note that both the start and the end of the lecture may be delayed (including the Q & A time). The Faculty will only distribute certificates to participants after the lecture is over, as signified by the presentation of a souvenir to the speaker. Certificates of attendance will only be provided to participants if they stay for the whole lecture. 2) Certificates of attendance will not be provided to participants who are late for more than 10 minutes, or leave before the lecture is finished. 3) The Faculty reserves the right of final decision in any disputes over the issuance of certificates of attendance. Registration Link Abstract It has been widely recognized that map is one of the three ancient communication means (other two are natural language and music). Since very ancient time, maps have found applications in various disciplines such business, construction, environment, international relations, military, planning, politics, resources management and social sciences. The advent of Google Earth has made public use of maps popular. In this presentation, illustrations will be given on how maps can be utilized to represent human knowledge (about the concepts, facts, attributes, status and relations of natural/social events/phenomena); key theoretical and technological issues in map-based representations such as Google Earth will then be examined; examples will be given on how the presenter has tackled some of the key issues (both in theory and methodology), leading to a number of national and international awards; and some personal views will be given on future development. About the Speaker Prof. Zhilin Li is a chair professor of Geo-Informatics at the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1996 as assistant professor, and was promoted to associate professor in 1998, to professor in 2003 and to chair professor in 2013. His main research areas are theories of digital cartography, digital terrain modelling and feature extraction from remote sensing images. His research achievement has been well-recognized nationally and internationally. As a result, he has been presented with the Schwidefsky Award by the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) in 2004, National Natural Science Award by Central Government of China in 2004, the Gino Cassinis Award by ISPRS in 2008, and DSc (Doctor of Science) by the University of Glasgow in 2009 ( http://www.lsgi.polyu.edu.hk/staff/ZL.Li/index.htm). He holds a BSc (1982) from Southwest Jiaotong University and a PhD (1990) from the University of Glasgow (UK). Prior to his appointment at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1996, he had been a lecturer at Curtin University of Technology (Australia), research fellows at Berlin University of Technology (Germany) and University of Southampton, a research associate at Newcastle upon Tyne.
