Junior School News Junior School News THE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER FOR BBC JUNIOR SCHOOL From the Headmaster It is obviously a very busy week in preparation for next Tuesday’s Speech Night and it has also been a very exciting one. This afternoon we have the final sporting competition of the year which is the GPS Track and Field Championship. I thank all those boys who have made huge sacrifices to prepare for this event and all coaches who have encouraged and inspired our boys to achieve personal bests. Today we celebrated World Teacher’s Day and I would like to thank our whole staff team for the incredible job they do in inspiring all the young men entrusted to our care to achieve personal excellence. A personal highlight for me was to be at Middle School briefing this morning and see 10 boys express their sincere appreciation for the efforts of many Middle School teachers. On behalf of the whole staff, I thank you all boys; your kind words were deeply appreciated. I would like to share a letter of appreciation from one of the boys today and invite you to read more on our website via www.bbc.qld.edu.au/news/ “I would like to tell Mrs Cheng that I’m thankful for her being my Chinese teacher. Too often we progress through the ‘ropes of life’ and do not spend the time to express our gratitude for the support you gave for our growth. As a teacher, you could just ensure my knowledge is up to the standard. However, you saw me not as one of the many students you have, but instead you valued me for my strengths and even weaknesses. You promote an environment where I feel like I am able to not only share my contribution, but also to know it is actually considered and appreciated. Once again I would like to thank you for your endless support.” – Daniel Mr Graeme McDonald HEADMASTER 30 OCTOBER 2014 Upcoming Events Upcoming Events Events Upcoming Friday 31 October 3.15pm - 4.15pm Healthy Body Mini Clinic (4) Prep - Year 4 - Junior School Green Optional Friday night - Year 5 and 6 Father/Son Fishing Weekend Saturday 1 November Year 5 and 6 Father/Son Fishing Weekend Monday 3 November Music Audition Week 1.30pm - 2.15pm Junior School Assembly College Hall 2.15pm - 3.00pm Transition for Year 6 Tour of Middle School 6B and 6D 3.15pm - 4.15pm Athletics Mini Clinic (3) Prep Year 2 - Junior School Green Tuesday 4 November 7.00am - 8.00am Highlander Wresting (4) Oakman Park 3.00pm - 4.00pm Art Club (4) - Junior School Art Room 3.15pm - 4.15pm Chess Club (4) - Junior School Map Centre No GPS Pre-season Cricket Training 7.00pm Senior School Speech Night - QPAC Wednesday 5 November 3.15pm - 4.15pm Athletics Mini Clinic (4) Years 3 - 4 - Junior School Green Thursday 6 November 3.15pm - 5.00pm GPS Pre-season Cricket Training - John Noblet Oval Friday 7 November 3.15pm 4.15pm Healthy Body Mini Clinic JS Green Brisbane Boys’ College | Kensington Terrace • Toowong • Queensland • 4066 • Australia T +61 7 3309 3500 | F +61 7 3371 2679 | E [email protected] | W www.bbc.qld.edu.au | CRICOS Code 00491J FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL I hope that, like me, you took the opportunity on Friday or Saturday to visit the BBC Art Show ‘Footprints on our Future’. There are not too many occasions in the multitude of College activities that there is an event that highlights what the boys do from Prep to Year 12. Not only did I enjoy seeing the pieces that every Junior School boy had completed but I marvelled at the talent of the boys from the Senior and Middle Schools. While the boys have the creativity it has to be nurtured by the teachers, and BBC is fortunate to have three extremely dedicated professionals in Adrian Hunter, Maia Lambrechtsen and Kim Murray. They are assisted by their hard working aides, Sue Hunter, Kerry Brown and Lucy Moxon. I must confess to being a little biased in favour of Ms Murray as she does an amazing job in bringing out the best in the 400 boys in the Junior School. At assembly on Monday it was my pleasure to present certificates the boys in Years 3 to 6 who were awarded a High Distinction or Distinction in the ICAS Maths Assessment. Matthew Deighton, Matthew Jansen and Samuel Stafford all received High Distinctions. Hamish Burnie, Toby Davidson, Tate De Jager, Joseph Gilroy, Luke Goffage, Darcy Graham, Frank Herron, Mac Johnson, Daniel Kim, Nicholas Marshall, Oliver McDowell, William Ruddell, James Talkington, Finn Trebilcock and Sean Wan received Distinction Certificates. I would also like to congratulate the 66 boys who also received a Credit Certificate. Also in assembly I acknowledged the boys who took part in the Australian Mathematics Competition. Joseph Gilroy, Matthew Jansen, Oliver McDowell, Finn Trebilcock and Lachlan Tu did extremely well, achieving High Distinctions. Matthew Jansen is to be further congratulated for receiving a Mathematics Prize in the competition for being in the top 1% of students in Australia. Earlier this month 6S was invited to be involved in an international initiative called ‘Bebras’, whose goal is to promote computational thinking for students. Bebras is a competition and is run by National ICT Australia (NICTA) and funded by the Australian Government. Congratulations to Ethan Lo and Lachlan Ellis, whose team achieved a perfect score of 135 out of 135 putting them in the top 1.4 percent of the 1600 Years 5 and 6 Australian students and also to Ben Ward who was awarded a highly commended with a score of 120 for working independently on the challenge. The AGM for the Junior School Support Group was held last Wednesday and I am pleased to announce that Vanessa Kelly was elected President for 2015. Bonita Cory agreed to continue as Treasurer and our Secretary will be Catherine Burnie. I would like to thank Ian Naylor, our outgoing President, for his many years of energetic support for the Junior School. The Junior School’s loss will be the Middle School’s gain. I would also like to thank all our Class representatives who gave of their time so willingly throughout the year, attending the meetings and distributing information to their classes. Thank you to all our parents and grandparents who came to school last Thursday to join in the Prep to Year 3 Grandparents and Friends’ Picnic Day. The boys were very excited to show their school to their guests and I was very pleased that many boys introduced me to their grandparents. It was lovey to see all the blankets on the ground at Oakman Park, as young and old shared some special time together. I believe that this will become a regular fixture in our Junior School calendar. My thanks go to Amy Woodgate and Mark Griffith for coordinating the morning. Mr Gary Musson HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL FROM THE CHAPLAINS Last Friday we had the opportunity to savour an incredible array of art that had been created by students throughout the College. How true is the saying that “a picture is a thousand words.” While the meaning of some pictures leaves the viewer thinking, other pictures have a very real clarity of purpose. For example, while overseas, my wife and I took some photographs of some amazing historical locations simply to remind us of where we had been. Some of these photographs were taken in Athens and Ephesus where the Apostle Paul had been. It was quite something to stand FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT Remaining Music Performances Please note the last performances for our Junior musicians in Term 4: Tuesday 25 November 25 Junior Instrumental Concert,1.30pm - College Hall All boys in Years 4, 5 and 6 will perform in this concert, celebrating their work in the Instrumental music classes. Parents and friends are most welcome to attend. Monday 1 December where he stood. I must say having done that, this gave me a fresh Junior Co-curricular Awards, 11.20am - College Hall appreciation for Paul’s writings. Performances by the Year 3 Choir and Junior Strings It is clear from what Paul wrote about that he didn’t see any Wednesday 3 December cricket, tennis, football or rugby. What he did see was athletes Junior Speech Night, 6.00pm - College Hall competing and he keenly compared a running race to the race of Performances by Acton Strings, Junior Band and Colla Voce life in one of his letters. There are many points he makes but one in particular is that in a running race there is only one winner yet in the race of life, there can be many winners. Paul highlights the fact that the prize is to know Christ and to experience all that God would have for us as we journey heavenward. He uses the image of the race to encourage his hearers to think about their life purpose and their relationship with God. This Friday night students in the Middle and Senior School will share in some unforgettable moments at the GPS Track and Field event. For our Seniors it will be their final GPS event. Competitors AMEB Exams Congratulations to the following boys for their excellent results in recent AMEB music exams. These exams require commitment and dedication to complete and the boys are to be commended for their efforts. Samuel Alner (5O) Grade 1 Viola Credit Mitchell Boyne (5O) Grade 1 Viola Honours Ms Emma Carey DIRECTOR OF WOODWIND will often say how much they appreciated the support of their mates in the stand and how much that lifted them. We need to realise too that as we run the race of our life that there are so many in the stands urging and encouraging us on to be the people God calls us to be. What an uplifting mental picture that is! 2014 ISCF and Ministry Support Family Dinner FROM THE TUCKSHOP Tuckshop roster commencing 1 November Monday The Christian Ministry and ISCF end of year clecebration will Karen Culshaw, Tammy Knight, Lynne Cafferky, Sarah Mason, Karla Argent be held on will be held on Saturday 8 November from 5.00pm to Tuesday Zofia, Janette Young, Kerin Somerille 7.30pm. The Junior School Support Group YEAR 6 EXCURSION TO CSIRO Last week, the Year 6 boys went on an excursion to the CSIRO Artist of the Week Dutton Park. The boys learnt about energy and electricity and enjoyed their experiences in constructing their own electrical circuits. Mr Mark McConnachy 6M TEACHER ‘Morgan’ Year 6 For those of you who attended the Art Show on the weekend, you may have seen Morgan’s piece in the sea of ceramic works. Morgan’s creature possesses markings and engravings which depict the texture of coral. His form is unique in design and he has shaped and moulded it beautifully. Great work Morgan. Thank you May I take this opportunity to thank all who visited the Art Show, ‘Footprints on the Future’. I hope you enjoyed the many varied and interesting works our boys from Prep to Year 12 created. It was wonderful to see so many people enjoy and appreciate the creativity of our many talented boys. Ms Kim Murray ART TEACHER Co-curricular activities GPS CRICKET Pre-season cricket training and cricket skill testing for Years 4, 5 and 6 boys continues to be well supported with almost 100 boys GPS Track and Field Championships Years 5 to 7 Congratulations to all boys who competed in the GPS Track and Field Championships at QSAC yesterday. BBC team came fifth overall. Mr Russel Hansen CO-ORDINATOR OF ACTIVITIES currently attending each of the Tuesday and Thursday sessions. It is great to see so many boys learning new skills, interacting well with coaches and enjoying themselves. Special thanks to Jarrod Turner for coordinating these CricSkills sessions. Further details about these skill tests and results will be made available to boys soon. Please note, there is NO CRICKET TRAINING on Tuesday 4 November due to the BBC Speech Night. Internal trial matches Based on current boys attending training and new boys starting at BBC next year, we appear to have the numbers for three teams in Year 5 in 2015. Three teams in Year 6 in 2015 and four teams in Year 7 in 2015, which is great for BBC cricket. As previously indicated, for boys who are entering Years 5 and 6 in 2015 only, we have scheduled internal trial matches for Saturday 8 November, 2014. Year 5 in 2015 trials will take place on Miskin Oval while Year 6 in 2015 trials will take place on P&F Oval at BBC. In each year level, we have between 30 to 40 players to trial on Saturday 8 November (including boys ‘new’ to BBC in 2015) and will therefore split the year level trials into 2 sessions/groups. • Session 1 begins at 1.45pm • Session 2 begins at 3.15pm Boys will receive a note with full details from Mr Marriott or Mr Hansen next week confirming which session they should attend. For those boys entering Year 7 in 2015 only your trials will be conducted under a similar format on Saturday 15 November 2014. A similar note with full details will be provided in the week prior to the trial. Whilst these trial matches do assist in team selection and in placing boys’ in the correct ability group/team, if boys are unable to attend due to other commitments, there is no problem. Training continues for three more weeks on Tuesday and Thursday after school. Importantly, BBC cricket teams for the 2015 GPS season will not be finalised until late January 2015.
