VOLUME 37 ISSUE 35 5 November 2014 POPCORN Prince Of Peace Communicaons Observaons Reminders and News From the Head of College We are stronger together On Monday, the Year 12 cohort continued the tradition of visiting the Junior Campus to present worship. This year the message presented focused on their 2014 cohort theme – Strength in Unity. The students used the analogy of their ability to hold a tug of war rope to represent what they have achieved collectively during their time at Prince of Peace. Through the illustrations of the story of their journey at Prince of Peace, they shared the message, that each of us is stronger together. INDEX LINKS: The quote: “Individually each one of us is one droplet but together we are an ocean” was used as a basis for the message. This quote reminds us all that we all make up the Prince of Peace community, and that each member of our community is important and valued. The opportunity for the Senior students to share their message with the Junior students is but one demonstration of the value the College places on community. Uniform Shop Mrs. Valencia (Head of P-6 Campus) bestowed a blessing over the Year 12s and then led the entire Junior School students to sing a song to them. It was very special and another memorable occasion for the Year 12 students as they move in to their final days of school. Extra Curricular Activities The Year 12 parting blessing (complete with colourful streamers) was May God bless you with colours of joy and happiness: colours of friendship and tolerance colours of effort and persistence colours of comfort and strength. Go in peace and confidence today and always knowing you are the colours of our community. As we approach the last weeks of Term 4, let us remember the message that we are stronger together and Paul’s message May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, ‘17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word’. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 New International Version (NIV) Garth Hunt Head of College The excitement is building with only 2 more sleeps until this year’s “POPup night+market” This event is open to everyone – mum, dad, children, other family members and friends. This service will be held in the chapel at 11am straight after morning tea. Anyone is welcome to attend this service. 5 weeks to go! We are in the home stretch now for 2014 which is hard to fathom. As the next few weeks unfold many things will be happening for our students. Assessment begins, projects get finished and presented, the temperature will continue to rise and they will naturally get tired as we draw to the end of the year. Please take the time to listen to your children, to what they are and aren't saying. Relax with them and show them how to take time out and prioritise their well-being and strive to allow them as much sleep as possible. Any issues or concerns that come up during this time, we encourage you to hear what your children are saying and please speak with your class teacher if you have any questions or need any information to help support your child's education. JUNIOR CAMPUS Chris Mills Head of Pastoral Care and Well Being It’s time to shine We are moving up to one month left of our 2014 school year. This marks not only a time for things winding down but a time we all stand together, inspire one another and demonstrate the learning we are proud of. Our students have been building on their knowledge and skills over the past unit and over the next few weeks we will be capturing what they are doing well and identifying their places for growth over the rest of the term and into next year. You can support your child’s time to shine by encouraging the mindset that they are ready to demonstrate what they can do and we are proud of what they have accomplished. We don’t want to encourage sick children to attend school however we just ask parents to be mindful when making choices about whether or not their child attend school, that pre-assessment lessons and assessments are typically covered in this season of the year. There have been some amazing examples of progress and learning from our students so far and I wish all our students the very best over the coming weeks. Vicki Wiseman Leader of Pedagogy and Innovation Library News BIRTHDAY BOOKS – An urgent appeal! As we approach the end of this year, our students who celebrate November and December birthdays are nervous that there’ll be no books left for them! We still have a wide selection for our younger students to choose from but we are desperately in need of books suitable for Years 4-6…especially our Year 6 students. So, if you have any pre-loved books that are no longer being read, we will very gratefully receive all book donations…Please just drop them into the library at any time that suits you. Also, if you happen to be ‘Op Shopping’ please keep your eyes open for any bargain books that you may be able to snap up to help bolster our selection. JUNIOR CAMPUS Many thanks…Happy Reading! Thursday was the Gala Concert. It was an opportunity for each of the ensembles to showcase their learning and development. The quality of the performances was of a very high standard, and is testimony to the students’ effort and dedication and our team of tutors. The evening was a celebration of each the students and how they have developed in 2014. Thanks to Miss Cassandra Croucher for her leadership of the music program. A signature event each year is the Year 8 Musical. The Year 8 Musical is an important part of the Middle School Curriculum and provides an opportunity for students to work together as a team and perform in public. All of the rehearsal and learning was worth it, when you saw the quality performances of Johnny and the Bomb. Thanks to all the parents and the wider community who supported the students. Special thanks to Mr Zachary von Hoff and Miss Cassandra Croucher for their leadership and creative talents. SENIOR CAMPUS Will Bribie Island disappear like the Maldives, Kirabati or Tuvalu by 2050? Last week, the Year 10 Geography students headed off to Bribie Island to gain an understanding of the physical, environmental, economic and social impacts that could face the residents of Bribie Island if sea level rise occurs according to recent predictions. The students had the opportunity to speak with the ladies at the Bribie Island Information Centre before travelling around the island to get an idea of the potential impacts of sea level rise on the island community. This is part of a report where the students are required to compare the impacts on Bribie with one of the other Pacific Island nations or the Maldives. The students certainly enjoyed the amenity of the island. ACHPER Women In Sport Breakfast 2014 It was a great experience, we met some inspirational sportswomen such as; Cate Campbell, Courtney Hancock and Holly Ferling. These women were very relatable to most of the young girls at the breakfast, as they all started out their sporting careers when they were young. The morning continued with awards for sporting achievements for some of the girls from the schools who attended, and it was great to see how someone our age can make some great achievements in sport. The morning was very encouraging for girls to get into sport, and to try our hardest and to not give up. Helene Duncan 11.2 Special Lunch Day - Thursday 13 November Senior Campus Choice of: Ham and Salad 6” sub Pizza 6” sub 2 Chicken Teriyaki sushi rolls 2 Vegetarian sushi rolls All served with a soft drink and just $6. Each night was different, with the actors telling us a story with some memorable performances. What a great opportunity for students to push themselves, take a healthy risk and work together as a team to produce something they are proud of. Students were all able to contribute to the performance and should be very proud of their efforts. OR E SPORT SC Inter House Sport - Enduro Chess Laver are the inaugural Chess champions at POP after securing an intense and hard fought victory in the final against Bradman. The match see-sawed with Bradman jumping out to an early dominant position, only to be reeled in through the middle stages with Laver coming home the strongest to take the title. Jackson finished in 3rd place, narrowly defeating Fraser in the plate final. Our focus now turns to 4 Square Handball for the final event of the year (starting Week 8), with the results from chess meaning that any house can claim the overall 2014 championship. Current standings see Jackson, Laver and Fraser all equal first with 13 points, closely followed by Bradman with 11. SPORT SCORE InterSchool Sport Year 5/6/7 Cricket - Another stunning day for our cricketers, 2 fantastic performances. Team Blue came up against a rampant McDowall outfit and after the first 2 overs of McDowall's innings, looked like they would continue their winning streak. However captain Michael Weir had other ideas and as he marshalled his troops, Matthew Bunn bowled a superb over (2 wickets for 0 runs) to inspire the team and along with Sam Morajker (2 wickets for -2 runs) and Connor Wiseman (2 wickets for -1 run), as well as the fielding of Jaiman Sidhu, Anna Doudkin and Jonte Leonard, McDowall were restricted to a very competitive 87 runs. Blue's response was nothing short of spine tingling. Sam M and Lachlan Scott got the side away in great fashion (25 runs), Eren Kocer and Matthew B followed up with a further 14 runs and, as each pair chipped in, we came to the final pair (and last over) with 11 runs still required. The first 5 balls of the final over yielded the required runs with an array of daring stroke play. However the playing conditions mean that 2 runs are removed for a wicket lost, so the last ball was delivered with Team Blue in the lead by 1, however a wicket would see them fall behind by 1. Fortunately Sam M held his nerve and was able to safely negotiate the final delivery to deliver Team Blue and epic victory. Team White were simply awesome in one of the most lopsided contests seen. 143 runs scored (Sebastian V, Alex T, Sam P, Liam Mc, Harry J and Hayden G all amongst the runs) and when it came time to bowl, Jack F and Taylen H were almost unplayable. To top off a stunning performance with the ball, Jacob Sisson's panther-like fielding contributed to at least 9 wickets with run outs and catches galore. Well done both teams! Year 5 Girls Touch - The Year 5 Girls teams braved the heat and had another good day playing touch. I think the photos say it all - friendship, teamwork and good fun can be had by playing sport. The results were mixed and maybe the heat caused us to be a little slow in defence, however the try scorers made up for it. Well done everyone. Year 6 Girls Touch – The White team were amazing, not only in skill but in persistence and encouragement. The only game was against Albany Hills with us winning 5-1. Try scorers were Anna R, Emily M, Ella H and Marni N who scored 2. Anna R was great in defence, Marni a special in attack and Emily P is a wonderful supporter! POP Blue were excellent as well, winning their first game and narrowly losing the second. SPORT SCORE Year 7 Girls Touch - This week we had two interesting fixtures. Pop Blue had a game against Albany Hills while Pop White had a bye so the girls kindly shared the game, each team playing half a game and showing further improvements from previous weeks, moving forward together and driving through in attack. The score ended in 3-0 to Albany Hills. The second game saw the two teams play each other, with Pop White winning 6-0. The try scorers were Hayley Churchill, Aaliyah Coggins, Jessica Ebbott, Angela Fingland and Charlotte Stephens, with two tries. Well done, girls. Community Sport Two of our budding soccer stars, Trent Millard and Sasha Mee (both Year 5) have had their excellent development and form rewarded with selection in a very prestigious team representing Mitchelton Soccer Club. Both boys will be participating in the Youth Super League which is a well-recognised feeder competition and junior development pathway towards state and even national representation. Brad Wooding Junior Campus HPE Teacher This season the Year 8 Rugby boys won the comp!!!!!! At the start of the season we knew it would be a great challenge to win the comp. During the season we won every single game by 5 or more points. In this team all of the team put in loads of effort every single week. In the grand final we played Ferny Grove State High school, we all knew it was going to be a huge game. The grand final was a 2 all draw but Prince of Peace was declared the winner on a forfeit due to Ferny Grove arriving 20mins late. We were crowned winner of the District in Year 8 Rugby 2014. This was a fantastic effort considering we have no one that plays club rugby outside of school. Thanks to Ms Davids and Michael Salanitri for Coaching. Believe what his prophets tell you, and you will succeed." (2 Chronicles 20:20b GNT) The biggest mistake people make when they're overwhelmed is to focus on the problem. We don't look to God. We put our eyes on the problem instead of God. We see the tree rather than the forest; and close up, a tree can appear enormous! Fighting battles is exhausting. And have you ever thought that maybe, you might be fighting the wrong battle? One reason why people fight battles, is that they don’t want to let others down… and underlying that battle, is the faulty thought that if things don’t change, they are letting God down. Here is the thing. You can’t let God down. You can’t disappoint him. You don’t earn his pleasure or approval. That’s what grace has done. It is a free gift, uniting us, one with the Creator through Jesus Christ. Perhaps, the next time you are feeling tired and exhausted, you could pray the serenity prayer… DEVOTION God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference. As you learn to place your trust in God, you might be surprised by what happens. Pastor David MEALS 4 YOU Meals 4 You would like to thank everyone for their prayers, messages of encouragement, offers to cook, donation of groceries and money.
