Overview
NM3 and NM3+ are the next generation of Management Modules for the MICROSENS
MSP 1000 Platform. They form the link between the transponder modules of the xWDMsystem and the external management applications. NM3 and NM3+ replace the previous
Management Modules NM1 and NM2.
The increasing requirements of the market regarding security in optical networks have
been the crucial factor for this development. As a result the new Management Modules
offer high secure protocols like SNMP V3, SSH, SFTP, or HTTPS and support central user
authentication via RADIUS and TACACS+. To protect against manipulations the firmware
updates are encrypted and signed.
As NM3 and NM3+ Management Modules are equipped with two SFP ports, several MSP
1000 Platform chassis may be cascaded via optical channels to create a failure tolerant
ring. If one node fails, the network connectivity is re-established in about 50 milliseconds,
so all other nodes stay accessible. The ring functionality is fully compatible with the
MICROSENS industry switches of the Profi Line, Profi Line+ and Profi Line Modular series.

The NM3 Management Module takes up one system slot and provides a 4-Port Gigabit
Ethernet switch. The NM3+ requires two slots and offers in total 6 Gigabit Ethernet ports,
one USB expansion port and four potential free digital alarm contacts. Both modules are
equipped with a serial RS-232 terminal port for standard RJ-45 console cable.
Ethernet network loops will be detected and prevented by an integrated protective mechanism. Redundant network paths will be automatically recognized by the Rapid Spanning
Tree Protocol (RSTP). Virtual LANs (VLANs) with up to 256 VLAN IDs may be configured.
Furthermore the Management Modules NM3 and NM3+ support the Link Layer Discovery
Protocols (LLDP).

Web Access
The integrated Web server (HTTP/HTTPS) provides full access to all features and enables
comfortable use of the MSP 1000 xWDM-System without the need to install special software. It allows e.g. carriers to use the comprehensive NMP for configuration and fault
management while customers may use the web access to monitor ‘their’ system. For
such purpose the web access can be precisely adjusted for each user with ‘Read’, ‘Write’
or ‘Limited’ access - individually for all features. The web server may also be shut down
completely.
Similar to NMP the same data such as serial numbers, optical power level or statistics are
displayed.
SNMP
The SNMP data for all MSP 1000 Modules in the xWDM-System are created within the
Management Agent Module and do not require an external support through a Management System such as NMP. Therefore SNMP is fully independent and provides a redundant alternative management path.

Security / Authentication
With the implemented user model the access rights for each user can be precisely tailored – analogue to the SNMP V3 ‘View-based Access Control Model’. This access view
model may be applied to SNMP V1 or V2c access, practically creating SNMP V3 like
access protection, but without whose complexness.
The integrated central RADIUS server allows user authentication (according to IEEE
802.1X) based on username/password, certificate or MAC address.
Furthermore users can be authenticated by the central TACACS+ server and user access
may be restricted via Access Control List (ACL).
Local user management with various options is also available.
Memory Card
The microsSD memory card is used for the permanent storage of configuration, script
and firmware files. Therefore it is possible to transfer the complete configuration to a
new device by swapping the memory card e.g. in case of service. Herewith potential incompatibilities according to different device versions are avoided.
Optionally it is possible to store the MAC address to the microSD memory card, so it will
also migrate to the new device by swapping the memory card.
During operation the memory card is protected against removal and the fault tolerant
journaling file system ensures reliability and stability.
Only by using original MICROSENS industrial grade memory cards the long term system
availability and stability over the complete temperature range can be guaranteed.
