School Days News! ~November 2014 Issue~ Thanksgiving Blessing For each new morning with its light, For rest and shelter of the night, For health and food, For love and friends, For everything Thy goodness sends. -Ralph Waldo Emerson Educational Advisory Elections There are currently three vacancies on Saint Michael School Educational Advisory Council. A form was sent home last week with the youngest child in each family. It is also attached to this newsletter. Extracurricular Activities A reminder: only students participating in extracurricular activities are permitted to stay after school for that activity. If another sibling needs to stay, they are to sign up and report to the SAFE program. This pertains to ANY after school activity – sports’ practices/games, Academic Games, play practice, etc. Parent – Teacher Conferences Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 13 from 5 – 8PM and again on Friday, Nov. 14 from 8 AM – Noon. Please call the school office (724-588-7050) to schedule an appointment with your child’s teacher. All teachers are available for conferences. Please remember that conferences are 15 minutes in length. TEACHERS & PARENTS: If you find that you need more time during your conference, please set up another time to meet to be considerate of those having conference times after you. Your help in keeping our conferences on schedule is greatly appreciated. Request to Parents Parents: When paying for more than one activity, it would be appreciated if separate checks are submitted for each activity. This will make it easier for Mrs. Kremm to ledger the expenses before the checks are sent to the Business Office for payment to the various school activities. Join us on Nov. 20 at 7 pm in Lateran Hall for this informational presentation. This event is open to all adult members of our parish and local community. Please note: Anyone that has registered in the past does NOT have to register again. Campbell Soup Labels The school is no longer collecting Campbell Soup Labels. To Know and To Serve Religion Competition St. Michael School hosted the 6th Grade “TO KNOW AND TO SERVE” competition at Lateran Hall on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. Seton Catholic School from Meadville, PA traveled to Greenville to compete against St. Mikes. St. Michael School sixth graders who participated in competition were Anna Cooper, Evan Cianci, Luke Faber, Ryan Harcourt and Joseph Pfleger. Kim Lytle came from the Diocese of Erie Education Office to help administer the questions for the competition. St. Michael’s went on to win the competition and they advanced to the Diocesan Competition in Erie on October 28th where they took third place. The class won a $50.00 cash prize to be used as they liked, and another $50.00 to a worthy cause to be chosen by the whole 6th grade class. They chose to do a project that will be directed by the Good Shepherd Center in Greenville. Their team name was “Children of Faith.” Veteran’s Day Veterans Day is a time to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in School Days News! ~November 2014 Issue~ all wars, particularly our living veterans. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. We, at Saint Michael School will hold our celebration to honor all local veterans during Catholic Schools Week in January with a luncheon and program. Details will follow in future newsletters. Inclement Weather With weather delays and cancellation coming too quickly, please be advised that Saint Michael School will make an independent decision on whether to delay or cancel school. This decision is not decided by our surrounding public schools. Parents will be notified through our Blackboard Alert system, KDKA TV, and on the Youngstown TV Channels. SMS Window Decal While they last, any parent wishing to have a SMS window decal, please call the school office and one will be sent home with your child. Good Shepherd Center Saint Michael School and Parish have been asked to collect 135 boxed desserts. Items are due to the school office by Monday, November 17. Mandated Reporter Training For any volunteer who still needs to complete the Mandated Reporter Training, the Crime Victim Center of Erie County will be offering the course on Nov. 25 and again on Dec. 11 from 5 – 8PM. SMS PROUD Will Toth, a fifth grade student in Miss Emily Zgonc’s class, is a member of the Kinsman Badger Braves Youth Varsity Football Team. The team participates in the North East Ohio Youth Football League. This past season, Will was a two way starter for the Braves. The varsity team, which is made up of 11, 12 and 13 year old athletes, compiled a final record of 8-2, winning their division and were the runner ups in the league championship Superbowl game. Way to go Will!!!! Congratulations to Sophia Geving and Hannah Brewer who went undefeated in the Academic Leagues Games of America competition for the game Propaganda at Slippery Rock University. Great Job! Congratulations to Sheila Wasser, mother of 1st grader Mallory Webker, who received the 2014 Distinguished Staff Newcomer Award at St. Paul’s Homes. Student Council News Congratulations to members of the Middle School who were elected by their peers to represent SMS School. Student Council will meet during 7th Period on dates determined by Mrs. Kremm. SAINT MICHAEL SCHOOL, GREENVILLE RESUME FOR CANDIDATE FOR EDUCATIONAL ADVISORY COUNCIL The Educational Advisory Council (EAC) of Saint Michael School is looking for parents to fill three vacancies on the council. The term of this position will end May 2017. The purpose of this position is: 1. To serve as an advisory council assisting the Pastor and Principal in the administration of the parish grade school subject to such regulations that may proceed from the Diocese of Erie or the Catholic Schools Office. 2. To accept the responsibility of providing the students of Saint Michael School with the highest quality of education consistent with parish capabilities. 3. To conduct all business falling within the framework of the duties and functions of the council during an official council meeting. To be elected to the Council, a person must be at least 21 years of age, a registered member of Saint Michael Church, a practicing Catholic and must have children currently attending or planning to attend Saint Michael School. One seat on the Council may be open to any non-parishioner parent (Catholic or non-Catholic) who has a child enrolled in the school. This slate for elections will fill the May 2014 – May 2017 term. Elections were postponed this past May. Normally elections are held each spring to fill three upcoming vacancies. Meetings are scheduled for the fourth Wednesday of each month, but may be changed to meet both the Pastor and council schedule.
