Walk-A-Thon
Thursday, November 6, AIS students of all ages will be participating in a Walk-A-Thon. This schoolwide charity event has been conceived and planned by Juniors Hussein El Gindy and Omar Shaheen.
The project is part of the Community, Service, and Action component within their IB diploma program.
A number of other IB students are working with these two young men, as they completely handle the
organization, advertisements, authorizations, and physical arrangements for the event. They will also
handle the organization, recording, and timing have the Walk-A-Thon, as well as collection of monies.
The walkathon is in benefit of refugee children, with AIS students soliciting sponsors to donate a sum of
money for each lap walked around the track in the time allotted to that grade. Elementary students start
first at 8:15, followed by Middle School students at 10:00, and finally High School students at 1:10. What
a great way to end Term 1 – by thinking of others, and working together. I wish all participants a lovely
walking day, and best wishes to reach the goals you have set for yourselves.
End of Term 1
Term 1 ends on November 6, and Report Cards will be available on the AIS West Portal by November
18. All families should now have received their individual username and password for accessing the
Portal. Note that student and parents have separate logins. The Portal is our direct connection from
teachers and the school to students and parents. The Portal is accessed at parent.aiswest.com, or directly
through the AIS West website.

MOVEMBER
By: Mr. Ryan Boswood, Grade 9 & 10 Science Teacher
What is 'Movember'?
Movember (a portmanteau from the Australian-English diminutive
word for "moustache", "mo", and "November") is an annual event
involving the growing of moustaches during the month
of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such
as prostate cancer and other male cancers, and associated charities
(adapted from Wikipedia).
Why do 'Movember' at AIS West?
This year our school theme is 'A sense of community'. As such male teachers and employees can seek
sponsorship money from staff and students to grow their 'mo' / moustache for the entire month of
'Movember'. At the end of the month this money will be submitted to the Business office and distributed
to a relevant charity. This charity will be decided upon by the school's administration at a later date, but
it will be a charity that is focused on health, particularly male health issues. All participants will submit
monies and forms to the Business Office in order to ensure transparency.
‘Hold the phone’ – Latest development
Other options to raise money, including ‘painting a moustache’ on a teacher (teachers have to volunteer
and give permission to do so) may also be implemented. The Elementary school may also run some a
more student-orientated fundraiser. I’ll keep you all posted on future developments.

Elementary

Grade 5C starting to make compost for our garden using vegetable and fruit scraps, dried grass, tea bags,
etc. Students cut it up into smaller pieces and then mix. We put it on the roof so it will heat up and start
the process. We hope to get rich compost in a couple of months to add to our plants.
Also, they had a visit from the UN Let's Take Care of the Planet (LTCP)
representatives, including, Miss Earth Egypt. This organization is an
initiative by the United Nations to involve youth in environmental
awareness and sustainable initiatives. They knew of our recycling efforts
and our rooftop garden project so they came to check us out - and to get a
lot of photo ops with Miss Earth! The students had a ball. I don't know
how much environmental awareness was involved with the visit but they
had a lot of questions. In one photo, you will see Hussein explaining, quite
well by the way, our recycling program to them.

Art
By: Ms. Krista Cary, Elementary Art Teacher Grade1-5
Last week Grade 2 took their art sketchbooks along on their class field
trip to the Egyptian Museum. It was great to connect history and art, and
to practice recognizing and drawing the ancient Egyptian style. In art
class, they are comparing the style of Egyptian art with that of other
cultures.
This week Grade 3 is finishing a project inspired by the artist Paul Klee.
They incorporated writing with design to make their own creative
animals with painted backgrounds. Here are some finished works; come
to the Grade 3 hallway to see more!

Grades 4 & 5 are working on a group project. They are using a contemporary artist, Jason Messenger, as
inspiration. They are making paintings, which contain the art principles of unity, variety, and repetition.
Don’t forget to visit our class blog for this year, “A look through the Window of Art”, at
http://mskristasartists.blogspot.com/. The blog is for students and parents.
Grade 4 and 5 artists are doing a great job working together! Working together can accomplish more in art class, just like it does in life..
The grades 1-5 art classes also have a private Instagram, with the name “mskristasartists”. To access this,
Ms. Krista must accept a request from you or your child. Students can bring artwork for the Instagram to
class, or email a picture to Ms. Krista. The Instagram is a way to encourage extending creativity at home.
Keep creating!

Pre – Kindergarten News
This week Ms. Autum Pre-K A is beginning their unit on Healthy Choices. This week the focus was
healthy habits. The healthy habits that were discussed in class were the importance of brushing teeth;
exercise, getting lots of sleep, and proper hand washing. Students learned a fun song to the tune of Row,
Row, Row Your Boat to help them remember.
Wash, Wash, Wash your hands. Wash nasty germs away, cause if you don’t you might get sick and that
would spoil your day! Students in the pictures below helped Timmy the Tiger to brush and floss his
teeth.
Also Ms. Cindy’s Pre-K B class learned about being healthy.
