Mini-seminar for Adults for Starting Your Own Backyard Flock 11/15/2014 at 2:00 PM The keeping of backyard poultry is an activity that has skyrocketed in recent years. Unfortunately, many new poultry owners are lacking important information and don’t even know it, until a problem arises. The few stores where people buy their birds and supplies are only interested in the sale, not in the daily maintenance of the birds. Because they are essentially livestock, chickens are very easy to get, but not as easy to keep, because their care does not follow the familiar guidelines of dogs, cats, or even small animals that most people are familiar with today. The rise in suburban flocks requires sources of information that are sometimes hard to come by. While there are many websites and books available today, even the most knowledgeable flock owners will tell you that experience is the best teacher. However, there can be many mistakes made on the way to gaining that experience, especially if new owners don’t know where to turn to ask questions. In addition, when searching for answers on the Internet, it can be hard for new owners to identify legitimate sources and solutions vs. spurious information. This mini-seminar seeks to address these, and many other issues that new flock owners may face, and provides reliable sources for future questions. Topics include care and feeding; illnesses; proper coop size and placement; predator control; hatching chicks; introduction of new birds; proper handling; attending poultry shows; biosecurity; and much more. Mary Hussey, a member of the Sussex County Poultry Fanciers, will lead this discussion on the advantages and responsibilities of raising chickens. The two-hour program, intended for adults only, includes a Prezi, and participants receive a list of print and Internet source materials. Live birds will be on hand for demonstration.
