Program Rationale: Pediatric and adolescent gynecology is an emerging subspecialty involving the
collaborative efforts of health professionals from gynecology, general pediatrics, adolescent medicine,
pediatric surgery, pediatric urology, and pediatric endocrinology. The gynecologic problems encountered
in the pediatric and adolescent population are unique to this age group and involve skills differing from
those utilized with an adult population. Presentation of common gynecologic problems in children and
adolescents, evaluation and assessment techniques, and therapeutic management require a comprehensive
understanding of embryology, hormonal physiology, and anatomy in the pediatric and adolescent patient
and an educated vision of how pathology will impact future sexual and reproductive functioning.
Program Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1. D
escribe the appropriate indications for HPV vaccination in pediatric and adolescent patients
2. E
valuate risks associated with social networking and other high risk behaviors in adolescents
3. E
xplain why emergency contraception usage is important for sexually active adolescents
4. S
ummarize the clinical aspects of polycystic ovarian syndrome in adolescents and apply appropriate
treatment measures when indicated
