The Montreat Worship and Music Conference is probably the best known and
most popular of the many faith related conferences held in Montreat, North Carolina
every year. That conference is specifically designed to benefit pastors, church music
professionals, and anyone who participates in church music programs. But every
conference at Montreat includes worship services that have been intentionally and
meticulously planned. Regardless of the theme of the conference, worship is always one
of my favorite parts. For me, there is nothing I would rather do than attend a thoughtful
and spirit-filled worship service that I am not responsible for.
Our packet of materials for the conference I attended last month included an
information sheet talking about the intent and philosophy of the worship planners. That
conference was titled “More than None.” It focused on the growing numbers who say
they are spiritual but not religious, and do not attend church. The worship information
sheet was titled “A Note about Music.” The following is an abridged version of the
document in our packets:
The discernment and conversation about spirituality and religiosity is multifaceted, involving intellect, hospitality, community, ritual, mystery, language and lingo.
Music looms large in the conversations about life together in the church, particularly
worship. These days, it is common to designate particular music styles as the primary
backbone of worship styles. The effort to increase hospitality by offering different
“hooks” for people not already participating in church brings a risk of creating barriers
between people and worship rather than creating a more porous membrane. It is easy
for worship to become a playlist of familiarity regardless of the music style.
The elements of worship flow in a conversation, and our hope is that music will
offer many conversation partners to our time together. Our chief hope and prayer, of
course, remains the one of the centuries: to glorify and enjoy God.
As I read these words, I felt proud of Fellowship and our resistance to falling into
rigid “style” categories for our worship and music. I am very grateful for the amazingly
gifted musicians and vocalists on our staff and in our congregation who plan music for
God’s glory rather than unverifiable perceptions about “what people want to hear.” I
hope you will bring your version of this concept to church on Sunday, and enjoy the
variety of ways we find to interact with the Spirit, as well as each other.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
The average attendance at Sunday School in October was 45! We had 14 folks with perfect attendance.
Congratulations to: Wanda Alford, Mary Bowers, Patty Domico, Bill Donalson, Anne Hall, Cliff Jordan,
Dottie Lee, Barbara Robertson, Sally Smith, Rita Sockman, Roger Sockman, Joan Williams, Duane Woods,
Shannon Woods. Several classes have started new studies or are about to (Coffee Talk, Seekers) so now is a
great time to start attending and get involved in these wonderful small groups! No experience necessary.
Prayer Labyrinth
On Wednesday, November 12, the prayer workshop group will use our
prayer labyrinth in the fellowship hall. It will be set up by around 5:30 if
anyone wants to join us. The class is from 6-7 and the labyrinth will stay
up until about 8:00. If you are interested in learning more about this join
us next Wednesday! Jeannie will have some handouts on Sunday also.
Senior Friends
Join us for a delightful Christmas luncheon on Tuesday,
December 2nd at 12:00 in Fellowship Hall. Please sign up to bring a
side dish or dessert. Meat and beverage will be provided. We will also
have a gift exchange so please bring a $5.00 wrapped gift.
