Welcome: If you are a visitor to the Cathedral, we want you to know how welcome you are – whether
you have come from another part of the country, from across the world or simply from another parish.
This weekend we reflect on the gifts and talents that we have received and examine the use to which we put them.
In life we are always faced with choices since we cannot to everything but we need to ensure that we do not
become so obsessed that important elements are neglected. One of the great elements that marks us as Catholics
is the call to charity and there are further possibilities of exercising this listed below.
Next Sunday after the 11.30am Mass there will be a celebration in the Hall to thank Fr Jamie for his contribution to
the Cathedral in the last six months. All are welcome.
We welcome to the Cathedral today representatives from Mary’s Meals who will be selling raffle tickets for their
annual draw as well as collecting clothes on Sunday morning, after all Masses, for their Rags to riches project which
receives clothes to be either handed on or else completely recycled. They should be handed in in black bin bags
and their van will be here Sunday afternoon.
A reminder that on Sunday 7th December after 9.30 Mass and 11.30 Mass there will be a sale in the Hall of various
items, books, DVD’s, glassware and sundry other items from the Cathedral. We are NOT collecting things to be
sold so please don’t bring anything for sale. If you wish to help at the sale there is a list in the sacristy. Please
speak to me about it. The proceeds will be used for Cathedral charities.

If you know of a forthcoming visit to a hospital or
serious illness or an operation, please let one of our
priests know before you enter the hospital, so that he
can give you the Sacrament of the Sick & any other
sacraments before you go to the hospital.

Parents wishing to have their child baptised should
complete & return a Baptism form, which is available
from Cathedral House. Please give two months’
notice for Baptism. You will be invited to attend a
Baptism session held in Cathedral House. New forms
with 2015 dates will be available before the end of

Wills & Bequests: The Cathedral Parish has benefited
greatly in the past from the thoughtfulness of both
parishioners & non-parishioners who have nominated the
parish to receive funds from their estate.
Gift aid offerings/donations: can be taken out at any
time throughout the year. It is a valuable source of
additional income to the Cathedral with no extra cost to
parishioners.
Mary’s Meals –THIS WEEKEND!
Work with some of the poorest people in Third
World countries.
We offer help by collecting
unwanted/unused clothing and bedding (all textiles)
and turning them into funds to carry out our work
overseas. For better clothing, we receive a better
price, but even from rags we can raise money. We
will also be selling Raffle Tickets Last year, the
clothing collections generated the amazing sum of
approx. sum of approximately £73,000!! The raffle
raised over £146,000. (A few Black Poly Bags filled
with textiles could generate enough funds to feed a
child in Malawi for a year (approx. £12.20). We are
currently feeding over 923,572 world-wide and with
your help we hope to continue expanding our feeding
programme). We regret we are unable to accept Brica-Brac and are unable to collect in the evening.
Sacrament of the Sick
Parishioners are asked to approach one of the priests
to receive the Sacrament of the Sick before being
admitted to hospital for treatment. If you are
housebound or are unable to come to Mass, the
priests will be happy to visit you in your home.
A Thirst for Souls
‘I thirst. I thirst for the salvation of souls. Help Me,
My daughter, to save souls. Join your sufferings to
My Passion and offer them to the heavenly Father

Mass for Young People
A Mass for young people will be held at 5.30pm on
Sunday 23rd November (Feast of Christ the King), at St
Peter’s Church, Carmondean, Livingston, EH54 8PT.
There will be Exposition of The Blessed Sacrament and
opportunity for Confession from 4.30pm to which you
are all invited. Afterwards there will be refreshments and
time for meeting and getting to know each other. Please
come along and celebrate with other young people from

Nativity Blessing and Carol Service
The annual Nativity Blessing and Carol Service will take
place at 3.00pm on Sunday 30th November in St
Andrew’s Square. Everyone welcome to join Exile
Gospel Choir, St Mary’s Leith Primary School Choir and
Edinburgh Deaf Choir to celebrate the start of Christmas
in Edinburgh.
Gifts for the Children of Prisoners
The Children’s Liturgy Groups are donating gifts
for prisoners’ children at Christmas and invite
parishioners who wish to join them in this project. The
gifts will be collected at all Masses on Sunday 30th
November and 7th December. The gift should be new,
wrapped in Christmas paper and bearing a label showing
the suitable age of the child and whether for a boy or girl.
Gifts for older children of 12+ years would especially be
appreciated. Last year we had difficulty meeting the
demand for boys’ presents in general, but particularly
older boys. Music or book tokens would be very welcome
or even gift cards that could be put towards PlayStation
or Xbox related items. These can be purchased in most
supermarkets. Thank you in anticipation of your
kindness.

Readers/Extraordinary Ministers needed 11.30am Sunday Mass
We need readers and extraordinary ministers to help out
with this Mass. If you are interested in contributing in this
way to the life of the Cathedral, speak to Monica or

Training is available “…. there are all sorts of service to
be done, but always to the same Lord; working in all
sorts of different ways in different people, it is the same
God who is working in all of them.” (1 Cor 12:5-6).
Foodbank - Broughton St Mary’s Parish Church
Our Church of Scotland neighbours at St Mary’s Church,
12 Bellevue Crescent, Edinburgh, EH3 6NE, have
organised a Food Bank operated from the Drummond
Room within the Church Precincts. It is open on
Wednesday from 10.00am to 1.00pm and Thursday
from 1.00pm to 4.pm. This is a very worthwhile project
and we would very much welcome our Parishioners’
participation. Only long-life non-perishables foods are
suitable – e.g cartons UHT milk, fruit juice, pasta, pasta
sauces, rice, noodles, tinned food: meat, fish, vegetables
(not potatoes), baked beans, spaghetti, fruit, custard,
sponge pudding, rice pudding, biscuits, jam, chocolate,
jelly, sugar, tea bags (40 pack), instant coffee (small
jars).

Cathedral Concelebration Vestments
Since we had such a good response to our notice two
weeks ago, it would be great if a few people could now
launder the new Bellahouston vestments, about 5 at a

A perfect wife - who can find her?
A perfect wife - who can find her? She is far beyond the
price of pearls. Her husband’s heart has confidence in
her, from her he will derive no little profit. Advantage and
not hurt she brings him
all the days of her life. She is always busy with wool and
with flax, she does her work with eager hands. She sets
her hands to the distaff, her fingers grasp the spindle.
She holds out her hand to the poor, she opens her arms
to the needy. Charm is deceitful, and beauty empty; the
woman who is wise is the one to praise. Give her a share
in what her hands have worked for, and let her works tell
her praises at the city gates.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-6
Let not the Day of the Lord overtake you like a thief.
You will not be expecting us to write anything to you,
brothers, about 'times and seasons', since you know very
well that the Day of the Lord is going to come like a thief
in the night. It is when people are saying, 'How quiet and
peaceful it is' that the worst suddenly happens, as
suddenly as labour pains come on a pregnant woman;
and there will be no way for anybody to evade it. But it is
not as if you live in the dark, my brothers, for that Day to
overtake you like a thief. No, you are all sons of light and
sons of the day: we do not belong to the night or to
darkness, so we should not go on sleeping, as everyone
else does, but stay wide awake and sober.

Even if you have to die, says the Lord,
keep faithful and I will give you the crown of
life.

The day of the Lord is coming, Paul warns in today’s
Epistle. What matters isn’t the time or the season, but
what the Lord finds us doing with the new life, the
graces He has given to us. This is at the heart of Jesus’
parable in today’s Gospel. Jesus is the Master. Having
died, risen, and ascended into heaven, He appears to
have gone away for a long time. By our baptism, He has
entrusted to each of us a portion of His “possessions,” a
share in His divine life (see 2 Peter 1:4). He has given us
talents and responsibilities, according to the measure of
our faith (see Romans 12:3,8). We are to be like the
worthy wife in today’s First Reading, and the faithful
man we sing of in today’s Psalm. Like them, we should
walk in the “fear of the Lord” - in reverence, awe, and
thanksgiving for His marvelous gifts. This is the
beginning of wisdom (see Acts 9:31; Proverbs 1:7). This
is not the “fear” of the useless servant in today’s parable.
His is the fear of a slave cowering before a cruel master,
the fear of one who refuses the relationship that God
calls us to. He has called us to be trusted servants, fellow
workers (see 1 Corinthians 3:9), using our talents to
serve one another and His kingdom as good stewards of
His grace (see 1 Peter 4:10).
