From the Chair,
I hope those who attended the study day found it worthwhile and any feedback
would be welcome.
The quiz organised by the social committee was well supported and a big
thank you to all those who arranged it for their hard work.
With only 7 weeks to Christmas I hope the preparations are under way. Next
month is our Christmas meeting and there will be nibbles and mulled wine.

Quiz Night
On behalf of everyone who attended the quiz
night on Friday 16th October can I say a big
thank you to the Social committee for an
excellent evening once again. The quiz master is
excellent with questions pitched just right.
There was a lot of laughing and camaraderie as
well as good humoured rivalry.
The scores were close and well done to the
winning team. Last man standing is an excellent
substitute for the raffle and great fun.
Well done to everyone involved, Sheila.

Art and Architecture
With our visit to the Wallace Collection the 2014 programme is now
complete. It was my first visit to the Wallace Collection, what a gem.
We have booked a speaker for a talk at Champions Manor Hall on
Wednesday 28th January. It will be a similar format to last year with a
buffet lunch followed by the talk. The speaker will be David Thompson who
gave the talk last January but his topic this year will be the architect
Nicholas Hawksmoor. (Probably 1661 – 25 March 1736).
Hawksmoor was an English architect, a leading figure of the English
Baroque style of architecture in the late-seventeenth and early-eighteenth
centuries. Hawksmoor worked alongside the principal architects of the time,
Christopher Wren and John Vanbrugh, and contributed to the design of some
of the most notable buildings of the period.
We will have full details in December but will be pleased to start taking
names if you are interested in attending. Chris
If you change lines (or traffic lanes), the one you
were in will always move faster than the one you are
in now.

Film Viewing
The film viewing group has been going for a year now. We have watched a
wide variety of films, some serious and some light-hearted and some
different; comedies, historical dramas, science fiction and big features.
Examples are, "The Artist", " Life of Pi", "Avatar", hard hitting American
histories, "The Butler" and "Edgar J Hoover", the Russian Costume Drama,
"Anna Karenina," "Ladies in Lavender", Noel Coward's "Easy Virtue" and
many others.
We have an intermission. Tea / coffee and cakes are included, and at the
end we have a bit of a discussion about the film.
All in all, we have an enjoyable and interesting afternoon.
New members are very welcome. Linda Cusick

Bird Watching
We went to Tollesbury Wick on a fine October morning and enjoyed
walking along the grassy bank to the hide. After looking at the birds on
the scrape we had a delicious homemade soup in the loft tearooms before
returning home.
Our next outing is to Chigborough lakes on the 6th November. Eileen
How true is this?
At any event, the people whose seats are furthest from
the aisle always arrive last. They are the ones who will
leave their seats several times to go for food, beer, or the
toilet and who leave early before the end of the performance or the game is over. The folks in the aisle seats
come early, never move once, have long gangly legs or
big bellies and stay to the bitter end of the performance.
The aisle people also are very surly folk.
London Walks Group 2
Our last walk of the year will be on Thursday 27th November and is
‘Dickens London’. Cost £6. Meet at SWF station for the 9.16 train or
11am at Temple Tube exit. Our guide is Richard.
After the walk it has been suggested we go to Sarastros in Drury Lane for
an end of year lunch. This is a Turkish/Mediterranean restaurant and is
highly recommended. The lunch time menu has two courses for £16.50
or you can select from the a la carte menu. Please let us know at the time
of booking if you are interested in the lunch as we need to book a table.

If you don't feel well, make an appointment to go to the
doctor, by the time you get there, you'll feel better. But don't
make an appointment and you'll stay sick.

An Emergency Call Centre worker in
London has been dismissed from her
job, much to the dismay of
colleagues who are reportedly
unhappy with her treatment.
It seems a male caller dialled 999
from a mobile phone stating,
"I am depressed and lying here on a
railway track. I am waiting for the
train to come so I can end it all."
Apparently
"Remain calm and stay on the line"
was not considered to be an
appropriate response...

BRIAN D’ARCY
‘Living with the ghosts of the
Tower of London’
Brian will tell you how he became a Yoeman Warder and lived in the
Tower for 23 years. Who are the ghosts who walk the battlements and
throw stones at the sentries, and the Earl who pushes people down the steps
of the Martin Tower and who screams on Tower Green? All will be
revealed.
