The New Program Design from Wellness & Leisure
Thank you to all who attended our informational meetings last month to
unveil our new program design. If you missed the meetings, the following
information explains what “Pathways to Wellness” will have to offer.
Over the past several months, the Wellness and Leisure department has been
working diligently to review the program’s offerings and evaluate the existing
program’s ability to meet current needs. We researched possibilities for
improvements and created new ‘healthy lifestyle’ holistic approach to all of the
department’s many offerings. We are calling it “Pathways to Wellness.”
A healthy lifestyle leaves you fit, energetic and at reduced risk for disease.
Good nutrition, daily exercise and adequate sleep are the foundations for
continuing good health. Managing stress in positive ways, keeping your mind
active and keeping your creative juices flowing are all components of the new
‘healthy lifestyle’ program at Cedarfield.
The icons on the following page will give you an overview of the types of offerings our new program will incorporate into everyday programming.
We are so excited about the possibilities of this new program and know that once
you see its potential, you too will feel the same excitement.

Wellness
Strength and Endurance
Being healthy and staying strong are goals we all strive for. Taking care of our
bodies comes easy at Cedarfield with numerous fitness classes, personal
training and our fitness center. Residents are given the opportunity maintain
their individual fitness level in a group or an individual basis.
Staff Advisor: Elizabeth Caudill
Consultant: Tom Maxwell
Creative Expression
Oil Painting, woodworking, water colors, pottery, crafts and line dancing are
only a few of the offered programs to provide residents with the opportunity of
creative expression. Under the guidance of specially trained professional staff,
residents are encouraged to explore new hidden talents,
or nurture lifelong passions.
Staff Advisor: Brenda Bickerstaff
Consultant: Kay Wallace
Intellectual Growth
The quest for knowledge is something that we never lose, and we at Cedarfield
would like to provide residents with the opportunity to do so. Various
programs offer participants venues for continual intellectual growth. Trips to
museums, focus group lectures, book clubs, travel logs, computer classes,
partnerships with local colleges and universities are just a few ways to allow
those interested learners a chance to grow.
Staff Advisor: Katie Ziolkowski
Consultant: Betty Hayter
Spirituality
Finding inspiration, maintaining an inner peace with regards to happiness and
spiritual practice are vital for personal wellbeing. Many opportunities for such
exploration are offered to residents on a regular basis:
Weekly worship services, healing service, Bible study groups,
lecture series, and much more.
Staff Advisor: Jen Tsimpris
Consultant: Nancy Boyer
Emotional Balance
Having emotional balance is essential to being happy with who we are.
Achieving emotional balance can be explored through involvement in some of
the following programs we provide: Resident Support Groups, Yoga,
Tai Chi, pet therapy, nature trails.
Staff Advisor: Pam Williams
Consultant: Glennie Brown

Dining, Diet, and Nutrition
Being educated about your diet and nutritional content are components to overall
healthy eating habits. Knowing what to eat, how to cook and how to make healthy
choices are key factors in maintaining your weight and being healthy. Our
licensed dietitian is here to help. Cooking classes, “ask an expert sessions” and our
hydration programs all lend support to your good health.
Staff Advisor: Christine Lacy
Consultant: Becky Gander
Community Outreach
Volunteering one's time or talents for charitable, educational, or other worthwhile
activities, is visible all around our community. Whether you choose to be involved
in an outside volunteer endeavor or participate in the knitters group, Cedarchest,
Resident Council or Medical Escort Program, the possibilities are plentiful.
Staff Advisor: Ashley Bentley
Consultant: Nancy Bolio
Social Connections
Social Connections offer opportunities to meet new people, develop interpersonal
skills, gain self-confidence, reduce stress, improve social or communication skills,
and have fun! Entertainment, trips and outings, game nights, movies and parties
are just some of the social opportunities we offer.
Residents also arrange social events on their own.
Staff Advisor: Amanda Kelly
& Allison Kahelski
Consultant: Jan Leaton
Brain Fitness
The term brain fitness reflects that cognitive abilities can be
maintained or improved by exercising the brain. Using parts of the brain that are
out of practice or daily cognition exercise can help maintain your functioning
level. Piano lessons, Spanish classes, Jeopardy and word games all help to keep
your mind working sharply.
Staff Advisor: Georgia Brown
Consultant: Don Branson
Program Champion: Allison Kahelski

A Gunner in Lee’s Army: The Civil War
Le5ers of Thomas Henry Carter to His
Wife, by Graham T. Dozier
In May 1861, Thomas Henry Carter raised an
artillery battery and joined the Confederate army.
Over the next four years he rose steadily in rank
from captain to colonel, placing him among the
senior artillerists in Robert E. Lee's Army of
Northern Virginia. During that time, Carter wrote
more than 100 revealing letters to his wife Susan
about his service in the South’s most successful
army. In this lecture, Graham Dozier will discuss
the process of editing the letters, briefly tell the
story of Tom Carter's life before and after the
Civil War, and share some of the many fascinating observations that can be found in the letters.

Be A Santa To A Senior
The last few years, Cedarfield staff and residents have
participated in “Be a Santa to a Senior”.
How it works: Home Instead Senior Care partners with
local non-profit and community organizations to identify
seniors who are lonely or financially challenged who might
not otherwise receive gifts.
Each senior's gift requests are written on a Be a Santa to a
Senior ornament. The tags will be available around the
second week of November in the
Wellness & Leisure Office.
Please return all unwrapped gifts to the
Wellness and Leisure Suite by Friday, December 5.
Gifts range from hygiene products, slippers to gift cards from
local grocery stores.
