November 7, 2014 Peggy McInerney, Principal MaryBeth Crupi, Assistant Principal Dear Parents and Guardians, DATES TO REMEMBER I am very proud to announce that the Coman Hill community collected over 240 new pajamas and over 1,060 new books for our pajama program drive. We all shouted, “Stuff the Bus” as each class brought a bag of pajamas or a box of books to the pajama bus. Children who live in shelters or group homes will now have warm and cozy pajamas to wear when they read a book because of our wonderfully generous Coman Hill community. I want to give a very special thank you to some parents at Coman Hill. I would like to thank Dana Goldman, Ally Wolland and Heather Hecht for organizing the “Stuff the Bus” event. On behalf of all the teachers at Coman Hill, I thank all of you for your generosity. Peggy The Coman Hill Bulletin 1 Page 2 AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE NURSE’S OFFICE - Since the beginning of the school year, we have been seeing colds, strep throat, pneumonia, and gastrointestinal viruses. In today's busy world with school, homework, after-school activities, religious education, and family commitment, our children often feel anxious and stressed. Stress decreases our immunity. Therefore, in order to build our child's immunity, we must insure proper nutrition, including a balanced, nutritious breakfast every morning and a minimum of 10 hours of sleep per night. We must begin to teach our children how to take care of their bodies. With this in mind, please be reminded of the Byram Hills Health Office Policies: - Any child with fever, vomiting, or diarrhea is considered contagious. Please keep them home if they have any of these symptoms, either the night before school or in the morning. If an unusual rash is noted, please keep child home and have him/her evaluated by your pediatrician. A body temperature of 100 degrees or higher is considered fever. In the event that your child has fever, vomiting or diarrhea while at school, he/she will need to be sent home. Please be sure you have emergency arrangements in place for your child. - No child will be allowed to return to school until free of fever, vomiting or diarrhea for a minimum of 24 hours. Please help us control the spread of infectious diseases by following these guidelines. - In the event that your child should require antibiotics or any other medication while at school, a written order from the doctor and a written parental permission must accompany the medication. There is a standard medication form in the nurse’s office that can be obtained when needed. All medications must be brought in to school by the parents. No medication will be accepted from a child. - Please also consider how your child feels. If symptoms of your child's illness are so great as to prevent her/his ability to function in school, please keep them home the extra day. Chronic coughing and sneezing is disruptive to the entire class. The Coman Hill Bulletin 2 Page 3 TechTips for Coman Hill: TechSmart is a program by the Byram Hills PTSA to provide information, programs and resources to help families navigate parenting issues related to the internet, media and technology. November TechTip – Screen Shots: Kids love to capture cool graphics or other images on their mobile devices or computers. One way they can do so is by taking a screen shot. Parents may also want to take a screen shot to capture an image, or to document a conversation or text message. Here is how to take a screen shot on various devices: iOS (including iPhone and iPad): hold down at once the Home and On/Off button. The image is captured in the Camera Roll or photo app. Android: hold down at once the Volume Down and Power buttons for 1-2 seconds. The image is captured in the Gallery or Photos app. Mac: hold down at once Command and Shift and press the #/3 key. The entire screen is saved as a file on the desktop. Windows: press the PrtSc/SysRq key. Windows captures the screen and copies it to the (invisible) clipboard, then you can paste as needed. Communication is one of the most important aspects of parenting in the digital age. Remember to speak with your children about safe, appropriate and responsible use of technology.
