Because I cannot have another in my life … I have given you my soul, leave me my name. — John Proctor in Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible.” W HEN I get to the Pearly Gates, St. Peter is going to ask how I spent my life. I’ll tell him half my life was spent pronouncing my name. The other half was spent spelling it. Misspellings and mispronunciations plague most people with multisyllabic names. Take mine for instance. Chances are you’re going to mispronounce it like the checkout people at Safeway when they try to tell me how much money I saved by spending so much money. They look at my name on the sales receipt and try to thank me, reading my name from the sales slip. I tell them I’ll give them a million dollars if they say my name correctly. So far no payouts. In my surname, the G is soft like the G in geraniums. In fact that’s a very good mnemonic. Think of geraniums in a vase and you will be a blooming genius if you say Gervase. Soft “Ger,” as in “geranium,” followed by the vase you put geraniums in. Spelling my name is another problem. There have been years of G as in George, E-R, V like victor, A-S-E. No, no, no, A-S-E. And, by the way, St. Peter, I spent quite a few years Scenic Views By JERRY GERVASE searching for lost shirts at the dry cleaners, and missing pictures at the photo store. No matter how many times I pronounced and spelled my name the friendly clerks would file my shirts or my snapshots under J, for Jervase. I can understand the confusion. My surname’s current spelling has only existed since my paternal grandfather’s ship docked at Ellis Island. His name was Antonio Gervasi. He was 39 years old when he left Vallelunga in Sicily. He probably walked to Palermo where he boarded a ship named The Sicilian Prince. He hit N.Y. harbor on June 29, 1903. Ship records list his marital status as single. Someone changed the last letter of his name from “i” to “e” and it stayed that way. My other grandfather left his little town of Afragota, Italy, to sail to the US of A aboard the good ship Republic. He landed on these shores on May 24, 1906, also a single man. His name was Antonio Sansano. A clerk at Ellis wrote “Zanzano” on the immigration papers. There you have it. I relate these stories because I’ve heard about the same experiences from many people. I guess spelling wasn’t a requisite to work at Ellis Island. I am the grandson of two Tonys and my son’s name is Tony. Yet, I have a most non-Italian first name. He was found to be intoxicated and unable to care for his own safety. Suspect booked at PGPD and lodged until sober at MPD. Pebble Beach: A 28-year-old male subject was detained by employees at a Club Road business for stealing. Subject cited out for petty theft. Pacific Grove: Citizen reported that an unruly lady was refusing to leave and causing a scene. Officer arrived on scene, and the caller said that she did not want to admonish the lady The Carmel Pine Cone 9RE but wanted it documented by police. Pacific Grove: Male stated he and his daughter purchased several items from a store on Forest Avenue. When they returned home, his wife told him she did not want the chicken wings and asked he return them and purchase some drumsticks. They returned to the store with the items and his receipt in a recyclable bag. He went to the poultry aisle, selected two packages of drumsticks and went to the register to pay for them. He told the clerk he wanted to return the chicken wings, and she had to get manager approval. The on-duty manager told the customer she saw him put two items in the bag before he went to the register. He explained what he had done, and the manager left. The clerk refunded the chicken wings, but the customer requested this incident be documented because he believed the manager was accusing him of stealing. I was the third child. After two boys, my parents were determined to have a girl. It didn’t happen. Following the doctor’s slap on my behind they slapped me with Gerald. To tell the truth I’m pretty sure I was supposed to be Geraldine, so mom and dad lopped off the last three letters. Social Security records show that, in the year I was born, I was one of 9,016 boys dubbed Gerald, which was No. 19 on the boys’ names popularity list that year. Geraldine came in at No. 41. My name means “ruler with a spear” — I can definitely see myself carrying a shield with crossed asparagus on it. Gerald is usually shortened to “Gerry.” And my mother further complicated things when she switched the G to a J. Add that one to the list, St. Peter. And now to confess to the ultimate misspelling: My middle name comes from my godfather, whose name was Harold, a name I am not crazy about and have taken great pains not to use. I have always spelled my middle name He-r-a-l-d, as in Hark the Herald Angels. My middle name is not on my birth certificate. The oldest document I can find that includes my middle name is my original Social Security card. There it appears as H-A-R-OL-D. Directly beneath it I signed my name, spelling it as H-E-R-A-L-D. So, St. Peter, when it comes to misspelling my name, I am the No. 1 offender. All you clerks at Ellis Island and Safeway can get in line behind me. We like our names pronounced and spelled correctly.
