This is one of 19 Malouf pharmacies in Brisbane and SE Queensland – it is a family owned and operated business. Ian spoke about medication management, noting that 4 in 10 Australians aged over 50 take 5 or more different medications every day. This rises to 7 or more medications for those over the age of 75. He noted that 190 000 medicine-related issues cause hospitalisations in this country every year, with around half preventable. Most are caused by interactions between drugs (prescription and over the counter), drugs and herbs and drugs and medical conditions. He discussed common side effects and the fact that many people are confused as drugs with a variety of different brand names may have the same active ingredient. He talked about MedsCheck, a program to review and advise on medications offered by pharmacists in store, or a home medicine review which takes place in the person’s own home. NEWS FROM DIK: Club News
