Thinking
Inside
the Big
Box
Thinking outside the box and inside a
big box retailer has earned Aurora Public
Library national recognition. Aurora
Public Library was recently named a top
innovator by the Urban Libraries Council
for its newest location – the Colfax and
Chambers PC Center. Located inside
Kmart, the Center opened in the fall
of 2013 as an outside-the-box initiative to bring library services to
residents in a cost-effective manner.
This 600-square foot area located near the store’s check-out counters has
12 public computers, offering Internet access, printer, computer classes
on a variety of topics, the ability to check-out and return library materials,
learn about library services and get assistance from library staff. During
the first four months of operation, the Center welcomed 10,000 visitors.
As of September 2014, more than 25,000 guests have visited.
The new PC and Library Center in the Kmart allowed the library to
provide basic PC access and delivery service in an area that needed it,”
said Aurora Public Library Director Patti Bateman. “Schools are nearby,
the site is located on major transportation routes and provides walk-in
service for nearby residents and students.”
Placing a library-managed computer center inside retailer such as this
and reaching out the community in this way is so innovative that it
caught the attention of Comcast, who gave Aurora Public Library a
$35,000 grant to benefit the site as well as two other locations serving
northern Aurora. Because of the grant, the Center is now open on
Sundays for at least three years and has now an AWE Early Literacy
Computer to promote the importance of reading and encourage early
childhood literacy to parents and children who visit the center.
“With the support of Aurora City Council, and now Comcast for the
Sunday service hours, the library is extremely pleased to provide this
access for this neighborhood,” Bateman said.

As part of our Teen Summer Reading Program, we invited teens to write their own book review on one of their favorite
summer reads. We’ll be sharing those book reviews on our Facebook page and in our upcoming monthly newsletters.
Thanks to all of our teens who shared their thoughts and favorite books with us.
The Fault in Our Stars is a book that is not
only thought-provoking, but it brings out
emotions so strong, you didn’t know they
existed. This book shows the power of the
human brain because one man sat down
and created a world…an infinity inside
limited pages.

Gathering Blue
by Lois Lowry
In a world where the weak are shunned is
where Kira lives. Unfortunately, she is one of
the weak. Though her leg is twisted, her gift
makes up for it. Her gift is with the thread! A
very remarkable story; very dystopian, but it
makes you think what is going to happen next.
I loved it. I recommend Gathering Blue to
anyone who like futuristic stories.
