Remembrance Day Assembly
A big thank you to our wonderful Defence School
Transition Aide (DSTA) Deb Thompson for
organising another fantastic Remembrance Day
Ceremony and to all the students involved with
speaking, singing and performing. You all did a
fantastic job.

Remembrance Day
One of the highlights of the school year at Greenwith is the
annual Remembrance Day Ceremony as highlighted on the front
cover of this newsletter. At Greenwith, Remembrance Day takes
on additional significance due to the large number of students
attending our school who have parents presently serving in the
defence forces. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of
staff, students and all who attended to thank Deb Thompson our
Defence School Transition Aide (DSTA), for all her work in
planning, organising and running this special event. The
ceremony was very moving and the students were extremely
respectful. Well done Deb!
2015 Classes
Teachers and leaders have been very busy this term constructing
our classes for 2015 from the information we have received
about who is coming and going. At this stage we anticipate
having 24 classes. We still have vacancies in a few year levels.
This year we also had 24 classes. 17 of the classes were single
year level classes and the remaining 7 were mixed or composite
year level classes. In 2012 we had 20 single year level classes and
4 mixed year level classes.
I often get asked what determines the ratio of single and mixed
year level classes? The main reason revolves around student
numbers. For example if we have 75 Year 4 students we can
construct 2 classes of 30 with 15 remaining. The school does not
get funded to have a class of only 15, therefore it will require at
least 1 mixed year level class to fill up the remaining places.
As a government school we can’t cap the number of students in
each year level. If a student lives within our zone and they wish
to come to our school then we need to accept their enrolment.
Therefore even if we have enough students to fill 3 classes and
more students move into the area, we would need to make
arrangements for them at our school.
From an educational perspective, the research is clear that
students can be just as successful in a mixed year level class as
they would be in a straight year level class. In fact the research
shows a number of advantages in being in a mixed year class. At
smaller schools most classes are mixed. We also know that
parents often like the option of a single year level class.
Even though the research shows it makes no difference to
students. The introduction of the Australian Curriculum has
made the teacher’s role in a mixed class more challenging by
ensuring they are covering the year level specific curriculum. This
is why over the last few years at Greenwith, we have constructed
classes to have as many single year level classes as possible.
In 2015 the numbers are indicating that all 24 classes will be
single year level classes. This could still change. If it does happen
it will only be for 2015. We will have 3 classes of every year level.

This term our writing focus is procedural texts. We made
yummy fairy bread and then recorded the steps we did. We
also used pictures and placed them in the correct order.
