WE GATHER TO WORSHIP Greeting
WE GATHER TO WORSHIP Greeting One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. All: And also with you. One: Let us prepare for worship. Karl Zinsmeister Preparation for Worship Lord God of all the ages, the One who is, who was, and who is to come, stir up within us a longing for your kingdom, steady our hearts in times of trial, and grant us patient endurance until the sun of justice dawns. We make our prayer through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Prelude (8:15) Carillon (9:30 & 11:00) Peal con brio Steven Thomason, guest director Robert Murrill Karen Thompson Prayer is the heart of the Christian life. Beginning and ending each day in prayer is a trusted spiritual discipline. Beginning each service of worship with prayer prepares the heart and soul to focus on praise and proclamation. Christian Welcome and Announcements (8:15 & 11:00) Christopher Edmonston; (9:30) Chip Pope Please pass the Friendship Register to your neighbor; include all requested information. Call to Worship One: O praise the Lord with me. All: Let us exalt God’s name together. One: O sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord all the earth. All: Sing, and give praise to God’s name; tell the glad news of salvation from day to day. One: Let us worship God. *Hymn 667 - When Morning Gilds the Skies LAUDES DOMINI *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. *Assurance of Pardon *Passing of the Peace *Response 437 - You Are the Lord, Giver of Mercy What does it mean to exalt the name of God? Is exaltation part of our daily spiritual discipline? WAYFARING STRANGER The refrain of this hymn is “may Jesus Christ be praised.” The tune name, LAUDES DOMINI, would roughly translate to “praise the Lord.” What is the fullest way to delight in God’s will and walk in God’s ways? (Hint: look at the fourth and fifth lines of this prayer.) As the liturgist proclaims the assurance of pardon, listen closely to the words. In many ways the assurance of forgiveness and of life eternal are the center of all acts of Christian worship. This responsive song is one of many new hymns in our Glory to God hymnal. We have been singing this for a number of weeks as a hymn in praise of God’s mercy. Austin C. Lovelace is a pillar of American church music. Known for his choral and organ music, he also championed hymnody and congregational singing. The 9:30 & 11:00 a.m. anthem is based on a Welsh tune that will also be played by the Handbell Choir. WE PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD (9:30) Sacrament of Baptism Weston Reid Leager, child of Lauren and Travis Leager (8:15 & 9:30) Old Testament Lesson - Psalm 123 Anthem (8:15) How Shall I Sing that Majesty? In Romans 8 we read a powerful expression of the power of grace in Jesus Christ to overcome all things. The Youth Choir anthem was written for and dedicated to the Middler Choir at the 2013 Montreat Conference on Worship and Music. It is written for three-part voices, keyboard, and handbells. In addition to the text from Revelation (4:8b; 5:13b; and 21:1-6), the anthem weaves the familiar hymn tune NICAEA into the music. Do you recognize it? 11:00 Offertory Anthem text: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first earth and heaven had passed away. And the One who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water. Death and mourning, crying, pain, shall be no more.” Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty; who was and is and is to come! To the One who is seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing. To the Lamb be all glory and might for ever and ever, amen! Austin C. Lovelace (1919-2010) How shall I sing that majesty which angels do admire? Let dust in dust and silence lie; Sing, sing, ye heav’nly choir. Thousands of thousands stand around thy throne, O God most high; ten thousand times ten thousand sound thy praise, but who am I? Thy brightness unto them appears, while I thy footsteps trace; a sound of God comes to my ears, but they behold thy face. They sing because thou art their sun; Lord, send a beam on me; for where heav’n is but once begun there alleluias be. How great a being, Lord, is thine, which do all beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line to sound so vast a deep. Thou art a sea without a shore, a sun without a sphere; thy time is now and evermore, thy place is everywhere. text: John Mason, c. 1645-94 (9:30 & 11:00) Laudamus In Matthew we read the parable of the talents, a parable that demands that we invest the good things, the gifts, the talents which God has given us. pew Bible, p. 540 William Owen; arr. Daniel Protheroe Unto Thee all praise be given, King of Kings and Lord of Lords: Heav’n and earth proclaim Thy glory, and the wonders of Thy works. Songs of praises we will give Thee evermore. In Thy mercy Thou dost save us, and from harm Thou’lt keep us free: when temptations dire assail us, we shall always look to Thee. In Thy pow’r we ever glory, in Thy strength we shall endure: Leaning on Thy gracious mercy, and Thy precious love so pure. original Welsh text by William Pantycelyn New Testament Lesson (8:15 & 9:30) Matthew 25:14-30 (11:00) Romans 8:25-35 pew Bible, p. 27 pew Bible, p. 148 (11:00) A Time with the Younger Church Tracey Daniel Children through fifth grade are invited to come forward. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth, praying, come, Lord Jesus! Amen. A Brief Statement of Faith is one of the confessional documents of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). It dates to the early 1980’s and seeks to be a concise expression of the major theological themes of earlier confessions. Like many confessions, it is Trinitarian in scope. This section focuses on the Holy Spirit. WE GO IN GOD’S NAME *Hymn 719 - Come, Labor On ORA LABORA *Charge and Benediction *Congregational Response Hymn 648 - Thankful Hearts and Voices Raise first time: choir; second time: ALL The tune name ORA LABORA roughly translates to “prayer is work.” This hymn draws its theological inspiration from John 4 and Luke 10. It challenges us to offer our best work to God— which is a call to both service and stewardship. *Chiming of the Trinity You are invited to be seated for the postlude.
